The Spongy thing is kind of already broken (though they'll probably fix it as you said). As of now, he's been eliminated twice in Battle for Dream Island, once in Batlle for Dream Island AGAIN, once in Batlle for B.F.D.I. and once in Battle for B.F.B., for a total of five.
This is just my headcanon/theory, but Spongy probably didn't count his Battle for BFDI elimination, since he wasn't able to be sent to the EXIT, plus he rejoined right after.
