Unseen Tears Native American boarding school documentary. Residential schools / boarding schools in the U.S. and Canada have had a lasting impact on Native communities.
Native American families in Western New York and Ontario continue to feel the impact of the Thomas Indian School and the Mohawk Institute. Survivors speak of traumatic separation from their families, abuse, and a systematic assault on their language and culture. Western New York Native American communities are presently attempting to heal the wounds and break the cycle inter-generational trauma resulting from the boarding (residential) school experience. Unseen Tears documents the stories of boarding school survivors, their families, and social service providers.

Being a residential school survivor it’s sad all the abuse we endured let be sexual and physical that our stories were swept under the rug we need our voices to be heard it is very hard sometimes when the wife wants to know about everything that happened I do tell her and she can’t fathom the fact that they were capable of such cruelty towards us but it did happen and I applaud all my brothers and sisters who have the strength to speak up about it

History is hell on earth exposed. I cannot begin to express my sorrow for al you endured. We cry our culture has been stolen but we must stop first and remember our elders like you who lived this horror. I was born 1989 and cannot fathom how close to my birth this all happened. To think they would have assumed me less than like you too. We are people. I’m thankful I come from proud people but have deep heartache and haunted by this past
I’m sorry so much of our Mother Earth is being corrupted. I wish you all the peace

I though this to be outreagous .i was not aware of all the monstrosites that were perpretated .and now it has woken up all kinds of feelings in me.i am so sorry for what you people suffered at the hands of those deviants.btw the statue of Ryerson has been toppled down in Toronto.he was much instrumental in this gravious affair as was the first prime minister of the day mc donald?take the indian out of the man??? This still continues to blow my mind to this day. The fact that this was not only allowed to happen, but was considered socially acceptable is so mind-boggling. How could anyone with a conscience look at something like this and not feel physically ill? This was by far one of the worst aspects of American history ever. If I could go back in time and change history for the better, I would do it without hesitation.

Lisa plambeck. It was not only allowed but sanctioned by the public at large. It was easy for them they wanted the land and the resources. They convinced themselves that they were dealing with savages. And IF they ever had a second of remorse (I hope that some did), they pacified themselves by insisting it was for the best...these people needed to be brought to God and become civilized. And that is how America and Canada set out to assimilate the FIRST NATIONS.

the last residential school here in Canada was finally closed in 1996. The effects of what has happened to Our Ancestors is disgusting in every way. Innocent children including my own parents were ripped from their loving families as young as 4. Yes I feel pain from what we have been deprived of. I heard it takes 7 generations to repair a full century of these alleged "civilization laws", if done with proper care meaning no addictions for every generation. The damage done is hard to undo because we now live in a society that feeds on addictions to keep functioning. I am an alcoholic and yes I felt I've lost my way home sometimes but I will never lose my sober path again. My children's future children makes me believe we are well on our way home together

Some people need to look up the influence Madison Grant had on Hitler. Eugenics was an international movement, but it was pushed hard by his connections to "influential" white men like F. Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby) who could sway readers with tone. The Roaring 20s indeed.

I was taken out of my home at 3 years old and taken to residential school only to be almost killed there. They didn't want me thereafter, and I was taken to the Supreme Court to be made a ward of the courts. I was then handed over to the social service to be put into the foster care system. I was in the foster care system up until I was 13 years old and I was kicked out of my foster parent's place. Social service could not find another place for me, so I was put on independent living at 13 years old, soak that in. Two weeks after I was on my own, I was kidnapped, raped by a man up in the mountains, almost killed, and left for dead up in the mountains stark naked. And today I'm a filmmaker telling our story.

I grew up in Buffalo. I remember going to the Akron reservation, in the 1960's, we had a Native housekeeper who lived on the rez with her family, some of the houses were just shacks, with outhouses for bathrooms. Back then, the N.Y. DFY (Division for Youth) also ran some pretty brutal "schools" in WNY, like "Industry", or the Great Valley camp, where children, who were mostly white, and who had been abandoned or "sold" to the state by their parents, were forced to work in the woods cutting down trees using double- bitted axes, among other things. I have a friend who was sent to Industry as a child, his stories about the place are disgusting, he is traumatized for life. I would like to see a documentary about the atrocities committed by the NYDFY back then, if there are any living survivors.

Considering the lack of afforable housing for most people in my community for decades now I wouldn't say my community is entirely civilized yet. Most seem to have more concern for their automobiles and pets than their neighbors.

@alchemicalmedia: I am wondering who (name?) is the government official speaking at minute 7:03? Was this in Western New York or in Brantsford, Ontario?

    • @alchemicalmedia
      @alchemicalmedia  7 років тому +1

That's a newsreel. He is "reporting" on a story as far as I know. That clip is is from New Mexico. We are looking at a policy of assimilation that was carried out across what territory is claimed by the United States and Canada. Interestingly the Russian government carried out similar policies in Alaska. The United States only needed to change the language of instruction at the schools the Russians had set up before the sale of the Alaska territory.
The federal and state schools adopted uniform standards and practices and applied them to the continent. Why are there so many less languages now in North America than there were 100 years ago?
Very few films exist of the New York schools there are more films of western schools. They started later and for whatever reasons there were more films made at those schools. Possibly because the BIA kept their media division in the west. The CBC does have more reels of schools in Ontario.

Wow I can't believe they don't teach this in public schools. I was fortunate enough to attend Catholic school all my life, and I had a great teacher that didn't teach from the standard government mandated textbook in middle school. She taught my class this and much more. I didn't realize that this boarding school system had been going on for so long. So sad D:

You can tell that they were standing in very hot sun on hot day for who knows how long while this crew got their clip.

If there were a HOH or deaf person watching this, they would not be able to make any sense of what anyone was saying and the message would be very lost. It makes their stories senseless and only makes them look bad. Someone should really look into this

Deuteronomy 28:32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand.
    Deut 28:33
The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed away:
    Deut 28:34
So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.
We are from the tribe of Gad we must repent and keep Gods law.
