How Do Cables Work? (with Demo!): Structures 1-1

  • Cables do one thing...carry tension! Here we look at how the forces in a cable and its shape are directly related. So the more we look, the more we learn!
We even have a demo (with some helpers who have a short song for you too) with basic string and small packets of rice...not complicated things but all the better for understanding the behavior of strings, ropes, and cables.
Plus, a reminder of a time when people used to write magnificent songs about engineering projects!

I have the feeling that I am learning more in 5 miutes of this than in 6 hours of uni classes on the topics. Thanks for making it so clear.

The cable is also rocking a little bit out of plane. Is it possible to work out a horizontal force which is responsible for that?
Let's say that we have a suspended cable structure (like in video) but it is also connected to another structure which is standing on the ground and stable on it's own. How to work out horizontal force which would be transferred from the upper part to the lower part?

    similar to the muscles
you can easily find which muscle do the exercise by imagine it as a rope
for example of do squat, it is the front thighs who do the most of the exercise because it will be under tension
