I use a Brother laser printer on all sorts of aftermarket paper and it works great. It’s also entirely possible that I’m not good enough or experienced enough to tell what the heat does to my paper. Seems to work fine.
I have an Epson workforce wf-7840 and I use the "my cartridge" brand of remanufactured ink cartridges to print on 9x12 Arches 300gsm watercolor paper. This printer can handle 13x19 paper in the paper tray (I feed one sheet from the back of the printer) making sure to select card stock and made a custom size, and I've only used it on the grayscale setting to lightly print my sketch. It printed perfectly and no issues with the ink running. I also outlined it with watercolor paint and again no issues. Hopefully that might be helpful.
Were you using the setup cartridges when printing on watercolor paper or did you already have DuraBrite cartridges right now? I've been testing with the setup cartridges and the ink does indeed lightly smudge :/
@mmart i bought and used the replacement ink from MY CARTRIDGE on Amazon and used that ink for printing on watercolor paper. I printed my art at 10-15% opacity and absolutely no smudging whatsoever with that setup. I do very detailed portraits and equally heavy washes with no problems. Sometimes I paint over the lines and sometimes I use permanent marker but I've never had this brand of ink smudge. I've used Arches cold press and Stonehenge cold press 140lb papers with the same results. I'm going to try using Hannemuehle and will try to remember to post results. You can print templates on your paper for swatching too, very useful. Hope this helps!
I use a Canon Pixma inkjet printer with pg black ink, the color inks are all cl inks which are not waterproof. Mine will take 1 sheet at a time of 140 lb without problem. It accepts 90lb watercolor papers from the stack paper front feed. 90lb is similar gsm to heavy coverstock and will feed thru many laser printers as well. The pg ink is a pigment ink, the cl inks are dye based and move with water.
This saved me having to go buy another printer! I have a canon pixma iP8720 and it uses both a CLI and PGI black ink, if you set the paper type to " Plain paper " and tick the " black and white " box for ink, it will use the PGI ink tank only, which produces a black that is just about water resistant enough to paint over. There is a slight tint in the water but it's a good enough result for my needs ( printing linework for a watercolor comic ). Thanks for the tip!
So much useful information! I have been researching how to print using watercolor paper and it is overwhelming! This really helps. Thank you for doing all the work…
Thanks for the video! This helps solve part of what I want to do: print in graphite on watercolor paper! My thought is what if you want to come up with your sketch digitally? You could do that and still have a graphite sketch on the paper. Or you could come up with a sketch idea and scan it so if you want to try various versions you don't have to redraw it! Now I know there are graphite cartridges for printers, I just don't know if they have them for ink jet printers
FYI: I just printed on a trimmed down piece of multi media paper with my Epson printer and cheapie ink off of Amazon and did a wash on it... the ink stayed put 👍🏼 Next is 140 watercolor paper... 💖 Thank You 💝 this video came just at the right time ... working on a project with my grandson that needs printing on watercolor paper 💫💖✨💝
Update: The 140 lb paper was too thick... I think... I lost my yellow ink nozzle and had to get a new printer... someone commented that there is a thick paper (maybe card stock???) setting on some printers...
i use an epson printer and epson's waterproof ink as well. i can confirm they work well but the ink sometimes repells watercolour paint just as Oto said, so do beware. kinda like alcohol instead of pigment ink in fineliners that don't repell watercolour. mine works with 300gsm and i can stack 20 pages or so. great concise vid 🥰
Hello Dr. Oto Kano I have an urgent question: If you print whith high quality, does the ink smear? My Epson printer smears as soon as I print in medium or highest quality. My problem is just, that the thin lines that it prints in normal mode (and waterproof) are not crisp enough. Do you have the same issues? Would be so helpful to find this out, because I am just about to order the same printer you have.
I have a work force (different model number) and it sucks up ink like crazy and refuse to recommend it! I get about 12 color sheets printed before it says it’s empty, 20 or so for the black! At $60 per refill, that’s not even close to being economical! I can’t wait to replace my expensive oversized paperweight!!
I didn't read all the comments but I was looking for where you got your paper? That big stack of watercolor paper where did you get it? Thank you so much for such an informative video!
I use Canon G-2000. I comes with waterproof black ink by default (the CMY ink isn't waterproof). The printer cannot pull the watercolor paper, so I push a bit then printer works well.
Thank you! I watched your previous video about it several times over and still couldn't get my printer to work, so all this very specific information was helpful. I ordered the Epson printer today (a similar one) because my laser printer just can't handle the watercolor paper - not even the thinner stuff. The texture on the paper is too much for it.
I have printed on watercolor paper with a HP Laserprinter. I didn’t think it would work, as that paper is thicker than the paper intended for the printer (I think that the printer is set to handle 240 gsm, so I also took a gamble by putting in the watercolor paper to test if it work). The printer was not bought with watercolor paper in mind. I printed, and painted, a bride and groom for a wedding as a card to follow the gift I had bought. For me it was not a crisis if it hadn’t worked, because I could always buy a card instead.
@@ElizabethaKaur it was bought to print coloring pages with thicker paper, so I had to research a bit, because they actually don’t list how thick paper they handle (!)… we ended up buying HP Color LaserJet M554, because we have a need for a printer that can print colors too. It was not an easy decision to make, because it was a really expensive printer, but with the laser, the “ink” doesn’t dry out as quickly, if you leave it for a few weeks without printing, in my experience.
I have laserjet printed colour onto watercolour paper. The image is all there, but unfortunately muddy in colour as the watercolour paper act mildly like blotting paper with the spirit based printer inks. Not a usable effect. That's why most inkjet papers have special coating so as to make perfect colour balance reproduction of the digital image onto the coated paper. However black linework is not an issue. Thickness is not a problem, my printer prints up to 300gms.
I have printed on 140# watercolour paper with a laser printer and had no issues. It was not a home laser printer though it was a bigger office one but it still seemed fine. I also use an Epson printer at home, it's an XP-15000 and the ink is uses is Claria Photo HD ink (it has a flower on the box) and even though I have not tried watercolour paper yet, this ink is waterproof when I print on my vinyl sticker paper so it might also work on watercolour paper.
@@lewisleung7062 if the printer has the capacity for thick paper stocks it shouldn’t jam with 140# paper. I think 300# paper would be too much for any printer.
Epson’s manual for WF-7210 says that it can print on thick paper from 25 lb (91 g/m2) to 68 lb (256 g/m2). The newer model WF-7310 also has the same spec. It is good to know that you were able to print on 140 lb papers. Your videos are so useful!
My epson (much less expensive than this one) will print just fine on WC paper, but the ink runs. It uses liquid ink so I'm not sure if there is something out there that will work for it. Yay research. Thanks for this video.
My laser printer does a horrible job on any paper that has a texture to it. I have a cellulose "watercolor" 90# paper that I use for sample giveaway cards and it ghosts whatever I try to print on it. I put a piece of Arches 90# paper through it once and it made a horrible mess. It seemed to lay the ink on the top of the sizing and it could be brushed off. I use a Canon inkjet printer for my little cards and it works well and is almost waterproof on cellulose 90#. I have not tried Arches through because of the mess I made on the laser printer. Dr. Kano, I have learned so much from you and always enjoy your videos. Happy Holidays!
Best video EVER. Thank You SO very much! I'm so excited I bought the right printer by accident. Never been so relieved. :) The details you shared are just so ultra useful that I wish I could download this video straight to my brain, so I could remember all the details. lol
First of all, thank you for this. Very useful. It seems the Epson WorkForce WF-7210 is no longer available for sale. Are there alternative printers that would work?
Great info about watercolor printer, ink and paper. What watercolor paper do you use? I imagine the watercolor paper has to be thin. Please enlighten us with some details. My Epson can print large paper sizes. Epson XP 15000. Thank you much.
OMG, JUST what I wanted! I used to use an Epson Stylus 2200 printer, print my drawing in black, but at some point, the ink was no longer water resistant and began to smear. I gave that printer away, and am now in the market for a new printer. It looks like the Epson Workforce printer/DURABrite Ultra inks are what I'm looking for. Thanks so much! You covered it So well!!
