My favorite part of gravity is that it forgets about Newton's third law of motion, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So slamming into somebody in space wouldn't send them hurtling forward as you continue going too, they would fly off, and you would be pushed in the opposite direction because of physics.
If the collision was dead on and inelastic, then one would have stopped moving while the other continued. However, they collided at an angle, so the moving astronaut only imparted some of their momentum. Newton's 3rd Law is great and all but you also need to observe other physical phenomena. It's not the end-all be-all Law in Physics. Conservation of Momentum is much more important in this situation. They were moving incredibly fast at the beginning but significantly slowed down by the end, which still didn't help the poor astronaut.
I am wondering, as someone who has not watched the movie, why they were in space without being tethered to the station, and why they were hurtling towards it.
@@ccaagg When we say zero-gravity, we mean an abstraction of any gravity present because the astronauts and the station are going at such orbital speeds.
It’s not like water you can’t swim because there’s no air that you can push so they wouldn’t be Karina and everything while spinning around they would just be creating a do everything while staying in a fixed position until they slam into the object
Don’t worry, due to the way orbiting works we should see the person that “fell” towards the earth in around 93 minutes, when we will hopefully encounter the person again
It's because of the astronaut suits. They're very thick to keep the astronauts warm, but that's why you can only move yourself very limited and it's difficult to grab things.
What I find ridiculous about this entire scene outside of being in space is the crazy weight they seem to carry for some reason. I am not expert in physics, but there's no actual force working against them in space. Once they even hit an object, I would figure they'd slow way down and not just keep going the same speed like they're being dragged around by an invisible rope. Or when the line tugs each other, I really don't think there's enough force there to just keep them both flying like silly pinballs
They would, between hitting a solar panel, and slamming into the station, they'd probably just be slowly floating by then. Like the panel buckles, and absorbs force, but then they just, zoom along.

AstoundingHades you would stop moving, but otherwise correct
Well, it depends on the situation. You would, in essence, "swap" velocity, just like the balls on a Newton's Cradle.
