    Excellent video!!
    You got a lot of great insulators from those rebuilds, making me miss the ones here.
    What the heck is all that white stuff on the ground? Lol
    Don't see that in Florida unfortunately...

    • @VariacManiac
      @VariacManiac  3 роки тому +1

      Hell yeah man! If it weren't for you, I might not have been on top of that rebuild when it happened.! :) Snow is what you're seeing, it covers the ground for almost half the year. Don't know what's worse: The heat of Florida, or the long cold days of the north. I think I'll take the last. lol!

    very nice insulators. in may, i got a pothead more to my collection, but i bought it, so no hunting here.

      @@VariacManiac potheads is more rare than other insulators, and harder to get. the 3 phase 12 kv pothead i show on some of my videos, took me 6 months to get. So it will be great to start looking now.

    how can i insulator hunt? i have a few high voltage insulators (one 6ft tall rubber one, 2 smaller rubber ones and a segment out of a composite ceramic one) that i got at a sale but i wish i could get as many as you find!

    • @VariacManiac
      @VariacManiac  3 роки тому +2

      Try to find rebuilds where the linemen are tearing down old stuff. Best chance at getting a lot. Look for an X on poles or new material on the ground, or any sign old poles are coming down. Search down right of ways, and even abandoned factories, but be careful.

    Awesome additions to your collection. I haven't been doing any collecting lately. Some of those pin insulators you got are extremely nice and I would definitely keep them.

      Thank you! It was a years worth and it turned out great, however, I might have too much now. I hear you got rid of some of your insulators, I might do the same eventually. Anytime I see one, I usually pick it up lol!

  • @Antno

    Nice man you were just there at the right place and right time. Wish I could find some as nice as those ones just out in the open, and not having to buy them off some guy In a flee market that has no clue what they are lol. Nice video man keep them up!

      @Antno 3 роки тому

      @@VariacManiac I bet, I have gone before to some places I know were taking insulators and poels down. So apparently national grid takes them now so I can't get the ones like you find. The only ones I can find a lot now, is old glass ones down by train tracks. They are everywhere there. But I will try checking if I can find any by the big hv lines, as I have no clue if they will leave any of those.

    • @VariacManiac
      @VariacManiac  3 роки тому

      @@Antno Sadly, many power companies just pick up their old stuff and throw it away, but if you're lucky to catch them on a break and persuade them enough, they might just give you permission to take stuff. Apart from rebuilds, only other places to search are down old transmission right of ways, many of which are off limits, depending on location. Abandoned places too are good areas, but again, many are off limits. Just keep your eyes peeled and you'll find something. It's what I do.

    Those are some awesome finds man, I would’ve gone crazy seeing those dumpsters, I love those short Maclean poly suspensions, I’ve got some like that except their 230kv lol, I finnally got some Lapp 230kv polys and just got some blue porcelain bells, ill be posting some more collection vids soon!

    • @VariacManiac
      @VariacManiac  3 роки тому +1

      Those dumpsters were just full to the brim. Emptied several times. This contractor actually has around 50 more miles of lines to rebuild, so I'm keeping my eyes out. Their currently on hold as their doing this particular right of way in sections (between isolation points) Therefore they can keep other parts of it running. Will be on the lookout for any new vids of yours.!

    • @futurelineman0524
      @futurelineman0524 3 роки тому +1

      Dang, seems like a pretty good sized job, last year they just rebuilt a 230kv H structure line into a monopole 230 line completely energized but the contractor wasn’t the nicest and didn’t really let me have much of the old stuff at first (even though it was garbage), later in the project I ended up making friends with someone on the job and that’s where I got a lot of bells and polys, now they just finnished changing single 230 structures and insulators on the other 230kv circuit that pretty much parallels the line that was just rebuilt, so I haven’t really been lacking when it comes to transmission stuff, I’ll try to have a vid up by the end of the week 👊

    wow cool! Thats definitely cheating! I know sometimes when my work is getting rid of a bunch of computers I have a hard time just letting them go. But I take the most important parts and get rid of the rest. There is no way I can actually fully scrap them on company time or even my own time.
    It looks like that last gray rubber insulator had an acr out! thats probably rare to find.
    That was a fun video going hunting!

    • @VariacManiac
      @VariacManiac  3 роки тому

      Yeah, it's a thing I can't pass up. The last poly with the burn actually has a corona discharge burn from the small point that formed on the steel during manufacturing. Pretty interesting to say the least.

      I was very lucky to have had the chance. 2 years ago, the contractor had leased some land for their temporary headquarters, and I knew that meant that they'd be changing things out. They finally did and managed to get permission. which is surprising.

    The damaged EPDM from corona discharge emanating from the little pointed flaw at the end and you allowing us to draw a conclusion was a nice touch. Hope you guys find some huge capacitors and reactors etc someday.. I've been asking lineman my entire life. Almost got a large cap one time his conscience got better of him I was so close.

    • @VariacManiac
