- Simple explanation and demonstration of map orientation along with how to take a bearing. The basics of map and compass navigation.
I am a scout leader and to my knowledge this explanation left the issue of declination totally out. There is a difference between true north and magnetic north. The meridian lines on the map show true north, the compass needle points to magnetic north. One must first adjust the compass to according to W or E declination to orient a map accurately.
FREAKING FINALLY!!! Somebody explains this in a perfectly, simple way. I can't tell you how many vids I watched, knowing I'd eventually trip on someone that could explain it to me the way I needed it. Thank you! Can you please take some time to work on a help-vid where say, you're in the woods with the family, you need to go hunting and you know it will take you possibly miles from your camp. How can you take off, perform the hunt and all that goes with that, and still be able to find your way back using your compass and map, etc.? By the way, I'm not talking about driving there in my suv, I'm talking about living out there in case the stuff hits the fan kind of scenario.
People learn via different methods.
My orienteering teacher at scout camp didn’t explain it he just signed off the requirement so this helps a lot thanks
You explained it so simply and concisely in three minutes without even needing recourse to an O.S. map. Thank you so much.
Short, sweet, and to the point!!! Excellent!!
one of the best compass and map videos i have ever seen. it shows exactly how to do it and is short sweet and accurate....excellent job
1. Re-calibrate compass north with map's north.
This is how I learned to use a compass. The win about aligning the map along magnetic north is you don't have to mess with declination. The map is oriented to the compass, so even if the compass has flaws, so long as the flaws are consistent you can still get a good bearing.
EXCELLENT. SIMPLE.
KISS (keep it simple stupid) thats what you did , best easiest advice i've seen and heard here.big thanks
Thanks plain and simple. Easy to understand. Thanks again!
Excellent demonstration. We’ve already seen adjustment for magnetic declination
Lovely explanation precise and easy to follow!
This is easily the best video regarding map and compass navigation...Thank you
Thank you for sharing on basics of maps & compass. Helps a lot! Keep up the good work.
This video is the best of all videos for compass use. Anyone will know how to use compass after watching this.
OMG, this video is amazing. I am a first class scout right now and this video helped a lot in studying for the board of review! Thank you so much. My leaders couldn't explain it to me this easily, and I am finally clear on how to orient a compass and other compass skills! THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN!!!!! :) :) :) :) :)
Thank you for a very clear demonstration!
Ha!! It sunk in!!! I switch off incredibly easily (which I have to fight constantly) and you got through!! Great stuff, Thank you!!
