I was in this! this was my first ever performance in the band, I was so overwhelmed at the time because the standards they held us to were so much higher than anything I'd experienced before (on top of it being my first week of college haha), but this is my first season after graduating from the band and it brings back so many fond memories to see this show again. Playing that first big note while in the Queen formation is something I'll never forget (I was in the 'u').
I'll share some info about the band experience since you guys seemed interested: We generally rehearse together for over 2 hours every weekday during the season, but this was right at the start of the semester so we had just come off a solid week of practicing 8am to 5pm every day. We also have optional training throughout the summer to prepare for auditions. All of the music we play is 100% memorized, so on top of the daily rehearsals you need to memorize the music on your own time, as well as touching up any of the formations you might be struggling with. On game days we report 6 hours before kickoff to rehearse, play at a pep rally, and generally prepare for the game (you show up IN your uniform too, which means for a noon kickoff you're probably waking up at 4am).
We learn a different show for every home game, so we usually only have 1 or 2 weeks to prepare a show from start to finish. It was a ton of work but so worth it, there's really no experience like playing in front of 100,000 people, not to mention the lifelong friends I made.
Thank you guys for reacting to the show and for all the kind words, it means a lot! If you have any other questions about the band I'd be happy to answer them!
How cool! Y'all did a great job. I have watched it so many times now
May I say you guys are brilliant! I went to another university and I give credit where credit is due! I love your videos. You know when other bands perform, you are the standard they hold themselves up against. The title is well deserved!
My father played in the band when there were 120 marching members. He was 1st man out on the right side playing cornet. He played six years. The last two years while in med school. They needed some personnel back then 65+ years ago. A piece of trivia, their uniforms are navy blue. Go Bucks.
I’m 65 and my legs still want to March every time I’d see a band. I did my pediatric training at the Children’s Hospital (now called Nationwide I think) and so I had to learn what colors NOT to wear on Michigander game days.
I live in Ohio and have had a few family members attend OSU. They really are TBDBITL "the best damn band in the land"... as to their practice schedule, these are full time students, mostly, and a lot of them also have jobs outside of school, but the band puts in a solid 20-30 hours per week practicing these routines. Also they learn a new routine for every halftime show. Please check out some more of their stuff.
Don't forget they're all in classes too
Please do more Ohio State Band. They do Hollywood Blockbusters, etc. They also performed in London. The Cheerleaders have competitions that you should check out. They are all over UA-cam. Very good. The students are very athletic & devout a lot of time to their craft. Enjoying you guys, as usual....
I agree with you totally. The Hollywood Blockbuster tribute is my favorite and yes the London Wembly one is great also.
My favorite is the Hollywood Blockbusters. Please react to this one
Hollywood blockbuster is the best definitely need to do this one
I am from Michigan, and Ohio is considered our rival, but no matter the sports team, Ohio State Marching Band is second to none. They are outstanding!!!! I am proud to be from Michigan, but I am also proud of what those folks do in Ohio, just stunning, and remarkable!!!
Ohio State Marching band is one of the top college marching bands. They are very impressive and it is my understanding they learn a new routine for every game. If you want more OSU marching band videos check out their Hollywood blockbuster show and their pre-game NFL show at Wembley Stadium in 2015. You gentlemen have a blessed.day.
The best one I’ve seen from Ohio State is their Hollywood blockbusters performing. Went viral years ago. They use fireworks in it. Very cool.
Marching bands have been a big part of American culture for many years. These bands are in high schools as well. I am an old lady now but I have wonderful memories of my brother and I following our high school marching band through the streets of our community after every home football win and we won a lot. (1960-1969). The neighbors would come out and cheer everyone along. I am so glad that these kind of traditions carry on. This and other types of extra curricular activities add so much to the school experience no matter on what level you are in. These students practice at least 20-30 hours a week plus carrying on with their school work. There is so much dedication from everyone involved and they are both appreciated and respected.
To answer your question the band rehearses for about 2 hours a day excluding weekends. Split up by music and marching sessions. The way we learn our drill is through an app called UDB in which is basically just a GPS of the field. Throughout the summer before tryouts we are taught to learn certain fundamentals (such as adjusted step) so that we are properly able to execute the forms on the chart. Rinse and repeat every home game!
The bands to me are always the best part of the game. I played clarinet in our marching band in high school and we were nothing compared to what these bands do. But even in high school we would have pages and pages of instructions to follow to make just one pattern. You also have to realize some people are marching backwards, sideways, and forward at different times. Plus some are marching in place, some are marching quickly, some slowly, some are doing what we call half steps just to create these designs plus have all your music memorized and be playing your heart out so you project enough sound in such a huge open air space and at the same time knowing where you have to be in the field during each pattern and yet be aware of the persons next to you to keep the connection lines looking smooth to people viewing from the stands. You’ve got to be moving as a unit. We practiced everyday of the week for home games on the weekend. Then after that game we would start learning a new performance for the next home game. It takes skill especially when you are moving between one another and you have to make sure you and the instrument you’re playing doesn’t hit anyone you’re passing. The percussion always amazed me because they have a lot more instrument to carry around on their bodies and alot of times they are moving sideways in what looks like a crabwalk and playing these intricate cadences. College bands are amazing and I think Ohio State is the best I’ve seen.❤
I played clarinet as well. We marched at all home games and most away games. We had to be in the band room at 7 am to march down to the practice field. Band was always first period so we practiced until about 9:15 am, marched back to the band room, stowed our instruments, and ran for our second period classes. The only time we marched with music was the annual Christmas parade. We were also a large band (marching 115) and, because of that, we were taken to an adjacent county to play Hail to the Chief for President Ford as he made a campaign stop by helicopter (I lived in the mountains)-we were a combination of terrified and giggly while being searched by Secret Service. We were also invited to march for the governor’s inaugural parade-I think I would have to call in sick if we had to do that again: it was two hours of standing while we waited and then a three-mile parade route. So, I can also say that I heard Spiro Agnew talk during all of the speeches at the end. We were all so tired and so happy to be able to take off our hats and unbutton our uniform coats that I’m sure no one actually listened. And, there were no seats for us, so we had to sit on the frozen ground and be grateful it wasn’t muddy or we would have had to stand.
One thing a lot of people don't mention is the sheer speed the band moves. It's a full football field and those guys are playing and booking it down the field. It's a lot of lung capacity at work.
@Taylor Miller
We were amazed at how much was going on and the precision of it all.
So impressive.
It's truly amazing how much goes into creating such an intricate and entertaining spectacle. I think this is unique to America. The cheerleading events would be great to watch too as they put the same effort and enthusiasm into that as well.
Hi both, the American marching bands are A1 at precision movements, they sound amazing and are brilliant at entertaining the crowds. This was a truly amazing upload ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Greetings from Columbus , Ohio , home of TBDBITL ( The Best Damn Band In The Land ) ... these kids work as hard as the athletes ! They do a different show for each home game ... their Script Ohio design is a classic !
I love watching the Drum Majors doing their baton tricks which with the far away videos you can't see.
Yes, you must see the tribute to the movies one. You will be blown away. And catch the Ohio script.
We Americans love you Brits!!!!❤
"Hang on Sloopy" is the official state song of Ohio.
Hello from Columbus, Ohio! Go BUCKS
THE BEST DAMN BAND IN THE LAND GO BUCKS O H
I love to watch them do the Ohio Script.
you must do a pregame show video with the ramp entrance of the band, drum major strutting his stuff and Script Ohio! The Best.
You REALLY need to watch their tribute to The Who at the NFL game in London. It was AMAZING!
I think that's the drum major ... the person you pointed to as the mascot.
Very cool band! You should check out their Hollywood Blockbuster half time show--very fun to watch!
Actually, many college marching bands travel to away games and perform at halftime. Some even perform their pregame shows, which is fairly common in the conference Ohio State is in, the Big 10 conference. .
The band practices 30 hours per week. Both marching routine and music must be memorized (many other bands allow musicians to use sheet music during performance).
That is so impressive, incredibly good! top marks.
There is a reason why the stands stay full at halftime at OSU stadium ❤️
You should watch their video at Wembley. I'm from the south and have never seen them in person but they are undeniably impressive.
The drum major has to be very athletic. Their preformance is very energetic.
Ha I didn’t expect them to start off with fat bottom girls.
They are considered the best, with good reason.
For this Queen Tribute, though guitars and keyboards are not a normal part of the band, this time they were on a stage just in front of the conductor.
God, I wonder how many pages this show was...we did Phantom and it was 50 pages and I thought I was dying.
They do it off iPads these days - another innovation pioneered by TBDBITL.
We are so proud of our OSUMB! I suggest you watch their performance at Wembley some years ago. It is excellent! They do the script Ohio which is one of their specialities. There is also a video showing their entrance into the Horseshoe (Ohio Stadium) before the game that is very good as well. It is from the same perspective as this video so you can see everything. In my opinion, the entrance is as entertaining as the halftime show.
GO BUCKS!!!
In high school we had one week to practice and had new show every week. Ohio state still does that. High schools today learn one show and just tweek it a bit each week
You need to find Ohios alumni week and watch their script Ohio with about 400 peole.
There is a couple more OSU Marching band that would be fun for you to react to. They are older, but Back to the Future, and TVland. TVland a broadcast station in USA that plays the Golden Oldies TV shows! Enjoy!
Followed mates! Love from Chicago 🇺🇸 ❤️
There’s also several OSU marching band ramp entrances that are spectacular. I don’t think you could go wrong no matter which one you look at.
TOTALLY AWESOME ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼 👑💕💕💕
@Brit Pops React some of the popular HCBU marching bands are Jackson State (South Boom of The South), Alabama State, Southern State, Mississippi Valley State and FAMU
It was fun talking to my 10 yr old Columbus Ohio grandson today. He was talking about the band and I told him about this video and sent it to him. Enjoy it, Laine...and subscribe..these pops rock!
@Eye of Storm Tarot
Hello to you and thank you for the very lovely comment.
So nice to know.
Have a wonderful day, wherever you are.
BPR
No matter where you went you've got to give it to them, they're a kick ass band. They did a Top Gun Mav one I particularly liked since Top Gun has been my favorite movie since the 80s. And now Mav is my new fav.
good call on the cheerleaders BP2.
I watch a lot of Reaction videos, and I think you guys are my favorites. You seem to look forward to what's coming next - such a joy to watch. This video reminds me - you would like Weird Al's Another One Rides the Bus. It's perfect. I've only found a video that's a live performance, not visual along the lines of Eat It and Fat, but the song is great.
As marching bands in the Big 10 conference (B1G) go, OSU is rather small, and being all brass with no woodwinds is very unusual. At Purdue, even when I was in the band, (the Pleistocene epoch) we put well over 400 people on the field. This show was interesting because it mixed some patterns in motion with the rank option going into the formations. A good show, really. A show can be put together in five days (home games on consecutive Saturdays) but a road game helps, it gives you two weeks. And if the band travels to the away game (Road Trip!) you take the previous week's show. This was well done and since OSU sells out their 90,000+ seat stadium for every game, the stands always look good. Not enough Tubas, of course ...
Texas A & M stands for “Agricultural & Mechanical,” not military 😊
We are a passionate people!
You should see them spell out script "Ohio"!
List of shows to watch: Hollywood Blockbuster, Michael Jackson Show, British Invasion (done in London), Elton John Tribute (combined halftime show with Iowa's Marching band) and also their pregame script Ohio dotting the i in Ohio is a HUGE deal
As a Ohio resident and longtime Buckeye fan we are proud of TBDBITL. You would enjoy them doing the script O H I O that they performe before every football game. It's amazing and moving if your a fan.
So happy you are enjoying our band! The OSU MB practice 20-30 hours a week and memorize the music so they are not messing with sheet music. Each member has to qualify each week to keep their place in the band. Not to cast shade on the Aggies, my grand-son-in-law used to play for them, but my heart has belonged to the "Buckeyes/OSUMB" all my life. BTW, this is The Ohio State UNIVERSITY Marching Band. Ohio State is a different school from further South in Ohio.
I think you will find that both schools have marching bands performing at all the games. It would take a pretty small school not to have the band travel to the away games. When I played football the band was actually practicing more. They had a week to get ready. I don't really keep up with cheerleaders. Many collegiate cheerleaders are men & women. The acoustics are horrible in these stadiums & the music is much better than it sounds. You have probably seen to top two but others I think are just as good, Pride of the Southland Band University of Tennessee, Notre Dome, University of Texas, University of Southern California, and the list goes on.
But none of them march AND play as well as TBDBITL - most might do one or the other, but not both.
I married a Buckeye and have two Buckeye sons, not because they attended the Ohio State University but because that's what Ohioans are called. They did all three complete Master's degrees, but at three different institutions.
@Brit Pops React ya'll really need to react to HCBU marching bands (Historically Black Colleges & Universities)..it's a huge part of Black American culture particularly, ya'll will enjoy the rhythm and soul from the bands sounds & dance moves
great video! i love seeing others react to something i love so much as a member of the OSUMB. to answer your question at 6:50, how long it takes to learn a halftime show depends on how long we have since we perform a new show for every home game.
for example, we had only a week a piece to learn 4 of our shows this year since we had 5 back-to-back home games, but then that led to having a few weeks to learn each of the remaining shows. band is a class we take that is a 2 hour block M-F and then we practice on our own time to memorize and practice marching.
In high school marching bands go to competitions where we compete against other schools marching bands.
Those high school competitions are so much fun! More trophies for the trophy case too.
There are definitely different types of high school bands! Mine was modeled after the BDBITL, but we never did competitions. We were all about performing for the community. I liked it because it was never too serious.
This was awesome, I'm so glad you're giving love to US sports and the support crews! For the best cheer leading, either pro basketball OR high school level, there is competitive cheer, now THAT is good stuff!!! 🐾🐾
You guys are real troopers, willing to check out the most cumbersome form of music ever contrived. They do RUSH songs in another video.
The auditions every summer in the heat or very very arduous and no member of TBDBITL is guaranteed their position for the next year.
They preformed in Wimbledon also
If you want the best watch DCI drum corp international where all these college band members spend the summer competing and traveling all thru the U S and Canada they really put on a show
Many/most of them are in high school, actually, or used to be. My best friend marched for Vanguard back in the day (70s, through '81), and a lot of people drop out when they go to college, so it's a mix.
Apples and oranges. DCI is a totally different animal, where they work on one show for an entire summer. These kids do a new show every week.
Watch more of these, the one at Wembley is wonderful
More Ohio State please! They’re by far the best to react to
It's quite patriotic for OSU to honor Queen? Think about who the lead singer doing homage to Freddie, not replacing him, doing homage, is Adam. And he made Cher cry. Patriotism is unevolved. And patriotism is unevolved.
When it was mentioned that Texas A&M stands Agricultural and Military, I was about 98% certain that was wrong. I just returned from Wikipedia, where it was confirmed that the 'M' stands for "Mechanical". No charge!😉
Believe it or not, the bands across the country have just 1 week to learn the music and the marching before performing it on a Sat. aft. During that week, they spend more time on the field than the football team. It sounds as if you may be watching your first OSU halftime show. If that's true, you ought to check out their "Hollywood Blockbusters" show, and/or the Michael Jackson tribute.
I'm assuming that your comments are quite good, but if you were to turn up your voices, or turn down the video feed, we'd much more easily hear those comments.
In response to your curiosity re. cheerleaders, I found these during the last few minutes:
Navarro College NCA Collegiate Nationals 2023 Finals
Live Oak High School UCA Nationals 2023 Finals (Champion)
The Best Damm Band In The Land
You guys apparently loved the tribute to Freddie Mercury [ me too ] I wonder what would have happened if they would've busted out We will Rock You. Probably would have been the first 8.0 earthquake recorded in Ohio history.
Please do more Ohio State Band, Hollywood Blockbusters!
I’d love to see you guys react to DCI which is competition marching bands from the US look up Carolina Crowns show E=mc2 it is these kinda shows on steroids. I think you guys would really enjoy it and be very impressed seeing some shows from DCI in general!
It’s the Ohio State University Marching Band. Ohio State is another college
No, it's "Ohio State". You're thinking of Ohio University, which is a different college.
Colleges have amazing cheerleaders too. Check them out.
They actually do a new show every week so they only practice a show for a week
More OSUMB please and it'd be great if you can watch one that features "Script Ohio". It's amazing to watch!
We love our band and. Our Buckeyes football. TBDBITL. The Best Damn Band In The Land
I recommend their Hollywood Blockbuster show
Please watch this band preform at NFL game in London. I'm not sure of the year but the Jaquars were one of the teams playing...You won't be sorry....I promise!
High school marching bands are more like the Texas Aggie
Rihanna Plays on Television Next weekend
Do HBCU marching bands
Definitely! They are in a category of their own. Suggest you check out the Battle of the Bands which is held at the Texas State Fair. Grambling vs Prairie View A & M. These are the Historically Black Colleges and University and their style is fabulous.
Have 2 weeks ta get it done.
But are they incomparable? #WCUIGRMB 🐏💛💜
If you haven’t done it yet, react to the Ohio State marching band doiny video game
u guys need to watch the michael jackson theme one
I enjoy your channel but it literally broke my heart that you talked so much over one of the “greatest bands in the land.”
Frustrating!
@Marie Just Me
Hi and thanks for the feedback, sorry we just get a bit carried away at the spectacle and this way pretty spectacular.
We will try harder to keep the chat in check
@@BritPopsReact awww, thanks. I hope I didn’t come off harsh. I just want to experience you experiencing them. Just not over them. 😂
This is unbelievably hard to watch. Why do you keep bouncing around and jumping in front of the video. Also, 3 minute break in the middle? Dear god
We are getting tired of seeing the Ohio State band. There are hundreds of other college bands. Including the great HBCU bands.
Well then suggest some.
@@robincochran7369 definitely. The Ohio State Univ Band gets a lot of play on these videos, but these guys definitely need to check out the HBCU bands. Florida A & M, Tennessee State, Prairie View, Jackson State are just a few of the best. Search HBCU marching bands. You will not regret it.
They are simply amazing. The number of endless amounts of practice alone is such
These are links to other performances of theirs.

This is the pregame show before an NFL game in London.
