I have been waiting for years for someone to post this awesome movie from my childhood. Thank you! A great movie for any young plane junkie at the time plus the great performance from Ben Cross and the stunning beauty of Mariel....Takes me back... Well deserved kudos to HBO films as well in this still-early outing.
Thanks for sharing this movie. I remember the day this happened and saw him fly over our village in Israel flanked by two IAF mirage fighters. When we looked up at the sky we noticed that one of the planes did not look familiar to us. It was only after they landed at the air force base near by, and hearing about it on the news the next morning did we actually realise what an historic moment in the history of aviation and espionage we were so fortunate to witness… Great stuff loved it.
I remember looking up from my bus and seeing King Hussein flying back east. Seriously. Everyone in the bus looked up to see his half blue jumbo. Planes like that never flew that route.
Thanks for making the movie available. Unfortunately the movie lacks a lot of attention to details in many places, like costumes, and Arabic accent. Some of the things that caught my attention: - Iraqi coat of arms on the planes: Iraqi air force didn't and do not use the coat of arms on the planes. The planes are marked with the army insignia (a green triangle with the Arabic letter dgeem in red) on the fuselage and the Iraqi flag on the tail. - Al-Rasheed base: The movie shows the base surrounded by mountains. In fact Al-Rasheed air base was (not sure if it still is) om the outskirts of Baghdad, which is a very flat city with no hills or mountains. - Camels in Kurdistan: Camels are not common across Iraq, and they are only found in the Desert regions west and south of Iraq, certainly not in the northern region, Kurdistan. - And here comes the big one, THE PLANE IN QUESTION !!! The whole purpose of the operation, Operation Diamond; was to acquire a MIG-21, the - at the time - formidable and most advanced Soviet-built jet fighter about which Israel and the US badly needed information. The movie failed to show that and opted to show the much older MIG-15. Munir's MIG-21 is now on display at the Israeli Air Force Museum.
Sometimes movie producers take a different approach to the movie; they include things which people expect to see. There is a name for it, but I can't remember it right now. Also, this is a fictional film, so they don't have to adhere to factual places. It's the producer's own vision of that place. We did that with our theatrical productions. But thank you for pointing out everything. 😊

Thanks so much for making this movie available.. it's an amazing watch.. with each actor really playing their respective parts so very well.. hopefully you could make available movies like McKenna.s gold,. where eagles dare.. the last samurai. the guns of naverone.. These too are movies that are amazing and timeless.. thanks for sharing...!!
I understand the difficulty in securing the authentic aircraft types for a production like this but I find it hard to suspend my eye for aeronautical detail, that said if enjoyed simply for being rare cinematographical footage of the illustrious Mig-17 in flight and in formation alongside almost equally rare P-80's its a great find. Funnily there was a similar defection by an Angolan Mig 21 to South Africa in the border war which was escorted by Mirage F1's (Israel and SA had very similar air force setups and fleets in those days given embargos on both nations and France's attitude towards both nations in the supply of weapons, like the Kfir we too modified a Mirage with canard foreplanes and uprated engines and we actually collaborated on a lot of projects) My best friend's father was one of the escort pilots and still has the defector's flight gear and bone dome.
Iraqis have all the right to call him a traitor..but as a Christian in Iraq who had no moral rights..were mistreated..had no promotions no raise etc..This guy had shown them exactly what Iraq deserved..betrayal 👍
felix nasse There is no such thing “based on a true story”. A story is just that; a story. This movie is based on actual events. LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH. Sheeeeeeesh.
Great movie even though it's clearly pointed out here that the planes used are incorrect. Also, Redfa's defection in his MIG-21 Fishbed was actually uneventful and didn't have a dogfight near the end of the movie.
Let us not forget that the 80 cowardly Iraqi pilots who flew 80 of their best fighter jets to Iran, and gave them to their long time enemy Iran, because they were afraid to fight American pilots in the 1991 war. The Iraqis also buried several brand new Mig-25 Foxbat fighters and SU-25 Frog Foot fighter-bombers in the desert covered with sand to hide them from American bombers.
What to expect from someone who betrayed his wife... I’m not an Israelphobe, but what victory that comes by leading someone on, tearing a family apart, and stealing another country’s property?! The airplane was NOT gonna be used against Israel anyways.
awesome movie . All characters were just splendid. its mixed with politics as well as human emotions. just superb movie to watch. am not going to forget Miss Helen too. she was just awesome.

+James Gorden Not an F-86. Israel never flew those due to US embargo at hte time. Those are Canadair CT-133's but are probably supposed to look like Fouga's or Ouragon's
They actually look like F-80 Shooting Stars or T-33s, the trainer variant of the F-80. Canada license built the F-86, not sure about the T-33. Either way Israel never operated neither of these but I understand its a movie.
The world might despise Israel sometimes but when boy oh boy..they are the best in the world..want to get something done..as the Israelis..Remember 2 mins over Bagdad in the 80s..they are clever..
Yeah, the music is worth mentioning. No chance that such instruments could have made these sounds or maybe a sick 8-bit video game console. It starts at 5:55 and you can hear the cheesy pipe for exactly 5 minutes... they comment on it, they dance hard on it and when the piece stops, the musicians just decide to take it over from the very beginning! All in all, it's still 7 minutes of the film! Priceless!
Unfortunately, not good at lying - pilot traitor to his country. After being involved with the girls Israeli Mossad. And used it as a pressure against him. Proof, O fools that he died of remorse, which recorded a note to his son (Do not sell your land. Even if by your weight in gold). And you can search for the story and make sure his betrayal.
My god this is super melodramatic, embedded in layers and layers of bad music. And why are all those Israeli's always so cliché stereotypedly casted ? If this movie rates 2/10 it"s solely because of the planes, the rest was a pure waste of money and efforts to make something cool out of it.

Leo enki, and the israelian fighters that escorted the Mig was 2 Mirage III and not the planes showed in the movie.

Today anniversary date watched the movie by coincidence. Around 1989 a Syrian MiG deserted too. Two MIG in total, they are in Air Force Museum.
The armies gather. Turkey, Russia, and US are inside Syria and Iraq. Slowly yet surely.

Do they have a movie about this Syrian Pilot Bassam Adel
With some careful fast-forwarding you can cut to the good stuff: Great footage of those old Migs. Really looks like a fun bird to fly.
in this movie the aircraft is mig 17 not mig 21 by the way im living near ALRASHEED AIR BASE

What's happened to the MIG-21? All I see is MIG-15s..
This MiG is much nicer than the boring 21
they used the MIG17 in the movie, in real life it was a MIG21
Love those F-80s that the Israelis scrambled.
In real life, Redfa was escorted by two Mirage IIIs.
***** Yep, and he was flying a MIG-21
