If you want to utilize the space under the black walnut for gardening, look up a list of juglone-tolerant edible plants! Black raspberry does well, and so do root vegetables and certain alliums. The list is pretty extensive, so it’s by no means a lost cause! The walnuts themselves are pretty tasty too.

I recently read The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, bonus points that the audiobook is produced well. If you're looking for books about ecology this one was really interesting. I knew invasive species and extinction were major issues we are facing right now, but learning about the details about how extinction works in general biologically and how exponential it is happening now was really eye opening to me. I can't go for walks anymore without seeing plants, insects, and all kinds of things that make me think about this book. Definitely worth the read.
It is so nice to see all the wonderful things going on for you! I recently purchased a home (very old brick house, built in 1904) and I can't wait to start being involved in the community there! I am a very introverted and anxious person, but the community seems like a wonderful one with community gardens and community clean ups of the parks in the area. And it is in one of the queer populated areas here in St. Louis! I'm going to take some of the good vibes you have here into my new home and hopefully can make friends in the neighborhood. I have been a watcher for a while, usually don't comment, but I just wanted to let you know that you are an inspiration and I hope to build for myself a sustainable life and community.
Just a suggestions. You can use the cardboard/ newspaper , manure and mulch method that will smoother the weeds and also provide you will a nice rich soil with a healthy microbiome. I am a long time gardeners and it’s the only way I do new beds now.
if you put a piece of pvc/wood/old broom handle in the track of your sliding door, it cant be opened until you remove it! try that and see if you like it :)

I would really bring a permaculture Gardner and consultant for a session - that can save you a lot of time and energy and learn things you havnt thought of regarding your specific landscape and needs- maybe even barter with one- this people can give you so much info and tricks that would save you time and money that its really worth it i think. maybe someone whos also a landscaper by training / landscape architecture- or just someone with skills in all aspects of planning a garden and outskirts from permaculture perspective.

Oh thank you for this video. I am getting seeds for pollinator encouraged plants to grow and have. Pollinators are so important, especially for fruiting plants. I do hope to encourage more bees and butterflies to come to my neighborhood because my neighbors and I depend on them for fruits and herbs to use as food. Thank you again for your list of pollinator plants.

The butterfly bush literally grows out of walls and considered a bit of a weed here in the uk so i love that you guys are so happy for it thriving 😅
You could pave under the black walnut and make it your shady sitting area! And use plants in planters if the toxicity is in the soil (I don't know how it works)

We live in a forest community with lots of very large wetlands and lakes, and as a community we all actively participate in protecting our turtles! This time of the year there are lots of egg nests all over neighbourhood protected by wooden boxes and closed off areas. Our roads also have turtle crossing signs 😂. They’re an important part of our lives.
Thanks for the book suggestions! I read Nature’s Best Hope last year and I absolutely loved it. I’m also reading Braiding Sweetgrass right now.
If you’re open to fiction titles, I have a suggestion you may like. It’s called A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers. It’s set in a world where people have taken action to live in sustainable harmony with the ecosystem and it’s really beautiful and hopeful. It’s also really short (~160 pages) so it’s a quick read. Bonus: written by a queer author with queer characters!
I use cardboard then straw to keep grass dead. It's easy to put holes in to put more plants in, and they break down in about a year- I use hay bales, and a few loose strands sometimes grow- They're easy to pick up as they grow. Straw also looks nicer than random cardboard slices in the yard.

I think that cat door can go on the back side of the other door and you don’t have to use the side you open. Also you can grow plants in raised beds that require little light under your tree.
Id consider swapping out the walnut and a pecan for a couple smaller fruit trees and garden. Unless those large trees are helping to keep the house cool from evening sun…i imagine that could be a bummer if you remove the trees and then the house gets hotter.

Also, it was great to see you challenging your social anxiety thoughts about going red today on camera. It’s something that we can really over predict that we do - honestly I barely noticed a change in your skin tone! I’m a trainee Cbt therapist and we’ve just learnt in treating social anxiety that doing behavioural experiments where you test if your thoughts are true (like i go ridiculously red and that’s all people see) are really helpful. So in sessions we would get people to have a red colour chart and choose how red they think they go, then get them to have conversations and ask the other person to rate it (without letting them know that’s an insecurity beforehand). We would then repeat this with making both therapist and patient increasingly red - I.e via exercise or blush, then socialising and seeing if people say something. The results have been really surprising - no one said anything! So definitely keep up challenging them and it will help!

I love that thing for the sliding door that is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. My friend has a built in doggy door with a remote control for her dogs and cats but I do love this idea. Black walnuts are so yummy and you can use their fruits to make beautiful dyes. I tie dyed a tshirt with them! My hands were also stained for WEEKS. (like, actually very stained for weeks. So hide your good clothes!)
Also Google “pecan picker upper.” Buy one. Stat. You’ll thank me later.
OOOHH fun!! I will def be harvesting them. It doesn't have nuts this year so I expect we'll get pecans/walnuts every other year.

We have a black walnut tree, and I kind of love it. When it grows the walnuts (which it doesn't do every year) we use the shells/husks to make a wood stain as well as ate some of the nuts. I like the smell of them too.
I'm hoping we'll have the same experience! Right now it looks like we're going to have walnuts/pecans every other year so we'll have to wait until next fall!

Question for your next Q&A!
What is your carbon footprint? I have seen some that measures your footprint in the number of earths needed to sustain life if everyone lived like you. Curious with all the headwinds you have just by living in Texas, if you're able to achieve a low impact lifestyle. Even if your impact is high, I think this will put into perspective how much ability individuals have vs the government/corporations to make change.
SUVs are not family friendly! In comparison to a station car the space for luggage is quite small and a lot of kids getting killed by car are because their parents do not see them in the driveway in their high SUVs. I drive a Skoda Fabia station car with two kids and it is perfect (do not know if it is available in US). In the cases we need more space we burrow a roof box. Here (Germany) are EVs available with around 400-500km distance range. But I am sure you will do the research when it is time for a new car :) We also still drive with gas but we purchased our car 5 years ago and there is a lot of progress in EVs since them.

The yard looks great. Also recently I realized that it's an el Nino year which is one factor as to why certain things have been odd lately. Anyway it's probably best to slow down on the planting for a bit but how are the indoor plants doing?
Working on a chemical free garden has always been my project since I bought my house. I'm definitely doing the same thing trying to smother the weeds. I rake all the fallen leaves into a pile in the yard, let the snow compact them, and minimally disturb in the early summer. It's worked on a few, but I have creeping bellflower that smothers the other plants that I'm struggling with. And I have to respectfully disagree on bindweed. It is an incredibly invasive weed that grows from the smallest root in the soil and will literally strangle everything in its path, as is the nature of vines. But my box garden beds must have been contaminated with seeds or parts of the root when I cleaned out an existing box because it had infiltrated my garden and there's no getting rid of it.
Love you planting natives! If you plant enough plants it should shade out the grass and kill it. Alternatively you can dig out the top layer but not great for the soil.

Maybe! Someone said to look up juglone-tolerant plants so I might try that! And we only put the cat door up when we let him outside, it's not there all the time so the door is locked unless he's outside!

Re: your prius. How is your hybrid battery holding up? My family is always on my ass about how one day my hybrid battery will fail and my vehicle will be a paperweight (hybrid rav4). I know hybrid batteries are made to last about 100k miles but I also see older Prius' driving around, like a decade old+ and surely they have over 100k miles on them and they're still running.
my car is 8 years old 100,000+ miles and battery is in perfect health! I get it checked every time I get a tire/oil service. I think all that is just propaganda tbh. ESPECIALLY if it's a Toyota vs anyyy other car. These things are build to last. The amount of money I had to spend on my 4 year old Ford is astronomical compared to my Prius so I say ignore them haha.

From my understanding, the purpose is to kill the grass so that it does not compete with whatever you are trying to grow there instead! The tarp held down by sticks like Shelbi was using is the same technique we use for land conservancy work when adding more pollinator plants to our preserves

I probably could but it's native, provides food, and provides some seriously important shade for us. It's 50 years old and I don't have 50 years to wait for the shade coverage hahaha. So we'll probably just work with what we have.

Wait... black walnuts are toxic? Or is it a different walnut in your area but shares the same name? Because where I live they are edible.
The walnuts themselves are edible and not toxic. She means the roots are toxic to other plants, so things don’t grow under that tree.
Toxic to the plants growing under them, not the nuts being toxic to eat.

not in Texas. These are native here & in a lot of the US. I think people think that bc it's very weedy but it's still a natural part of our ecosystem

Be careful with keeping the bindweed. I thought it was invasive...it chokes out other plants so just be aware of that. ❤
