    Ammonia (NH3)
    Normal 19-60 mcg/dL
    Indications
     Identifying liver disease
     Monitoring hepatic encephalopathy
     Evaluating effectiveness of treatment.
    Description
Ammonia (NH3) is a byproduct created when protein is broken down. Ammonia is converted into urea in the liver, and urea is excreted by the kidneys. During liver disease, ammonia levels rise and can have a negative effect on the brain.
    What would cause increased levels?
     Liver Failure
     Hepatic Coma (Hepatic Encephalopathy)
     Reye's syndrome
     Total Parental Nutrition (TPN)
     Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage
    What would cause decreased levels?
     Some Antibiotics:
    o Neomycin
     Hypertension

Question? I just found out that the way a diesel particulate filter on a semi truck works is it injects synthetic urea into a hot exhaust system to clean the exhaust. When the synthetic urea is injected into this hot system it converted into ammonia which has been vented underneath the Sleeper Berth of our trucks because the exhaust is so much cleaner now so during our rest. We are inhaling this hat burnt ammonia for up to 10 hours at a time. Is this why so many of our drivers are getting brain fog headaches? Spikes in blood sugar and lower testosterone? How do we test ammonia levels in our system?

I did blood work back in November of last year and my ammonia level was 72 umol/L. Is that considered high? My doctor told me it was still in normal range. I have been brain foggy for the past several months I think that might be the reason, but I am not entirely sure.
