Compared with clamshell and convertible Chromebooks, there aren't a ton of Chromebook tablets out there on the market. That being said, there's definitely more selection in this space than we've ever had before, and that means potential buyers like you and me are going to have far more choices to wade through than we've had in the past. It's a great problem to have, sure, but a problem is still a problem, and at the end of the day, problems need to be solved. Today we want to help a bit by looking at two tablets with very similar names and very different use cases to help you sort out which one is best for you.

With you 100%. I went back and forth over which size to go for, and in the end decided I wanted a laptop that could be an occasional tablet, rather than the other way around. I really like having the full size keyboard. Text could be rendered more sharply, but otherwise I'm happy with my decision to go with the Duet 5.

I have the original Duet and I use it all the time. My hands are small enough that the keyboard size doesn't bother me. And the speed is fine for most things. Plus, the battery life is amazing. In fact, if I didn't need to use certain Windows programs for work, I could easily make it my daily driver. As it is, I often grab it most of the time. And only grab my ultrabook, when the task requires it. I have even adjusted certain aspects of my workflow so I can use it more. In fact, I watched this video, and am typing this comment on my Duet!

@@klos6299 yeah although those compromises are pretty much baked into any device that was 249 at MSRP and has been as low as $99 at Walmart. As far as something being a daily.... I could survive if I were a college student or something with the duet but I really think it makes more sense as a supplemental device. But that's not an option for everybody. People living paycheck to paycheck may not have enough money to have a proper laptop/desktop and a duet.

Went with the duet 5 because I like the larger size, it also has OLED which looks more vibrant than the IPS display of the Duet 3. Battery on the Duet 5 lasts longer and the quad speakers provide a little bit better sound than the dual speakers on the Duet 3. If larger size is not a concern, I think the Duet 5 is the better option.

Weight is a huge factor, if portability is considered. For instance, I'm using (on your recommendation) the Asus C536E, which is a beast with its i3, 11th gen processor and terrific, Harman/Kardon speakers. However, the thing weighs A LOT, and after lugging it around in a laptop bag on a couple of trips, I dreamed of something lighter. Enter the Duet 3, which looks perfect. Also, I'm keen to use a USI pen, which just doesn't make sense to me for a device that mostly sits in "laptop" mode. I'm going to keep the C536E on my desk, and put that sweet Duet 3 in my laptop bag.

Thanks for your review a year ago. I've subsequently recently got both, having waited for a price drop.
I got the Duet 3 and then the Duet 5.
Relative to each other, I liked the Duet 5's better speakers, but liked the Duet 3's portability. I also own a Samsung Chromebook 2. The Duet 5 I returned as the Duet 5 is worse than the Samsung as the Duet 5 screen is about the same as the Samsung but that Duet floppy removable keyboard became annoying, you cannot just lift and move like with a true laptop.
The Duet 3 is a tablet / small laptop, but the Duet 5 is neither good as a tablet (too big) nor as a laptop (too floppy).
So in the end I concluded get a proper laptop for proper laptop contexts, they can fold the keyboard under like my full hinged Samsung Chromebook, and the Duet 3 has a happy mix of tablet or can attach keyboard if you found a long sitdown typing need. In bed I'm using a bluetooth backlit keyboard for Duet 3 so I can see the keys.
As for what Lenovo should do next, it's obvious: improve the CPU, as Duet 3 stutters a bit relative to say a Core I3 Samsung, improve the speakers so it's more of a media consumption, say just having it in kitchen while cooking it's too feeble a sound, and a backlight keyboard. I'd add a microSD slot too for moving with a lot of offline media files.

I briefly considered the Duet 3 against the Duet 5, but quickly decided to go with the larger sibling. It was mainly because I already have a Lenovo M9 tablet, which I use daily as my go-to handheld device for gaming, news/book reading, etc. The 11-inch form factor of the Duet 3 would have been a bit too big as a handheld device for me, too.

i also own a 6th gen intel laptop with an hdd and i honestly prefer much more to use the duet for on the go laptop needs
my only grime is that the touchscreen doesnt work... opened it right up and the circuits are not damaged at all, not a crack on the screen either, not a clue what could be wrong with it
at least it works as a laptop
but honestly this device made me apreciate these types of chromblets, im aiming to buy an HP x2 11 or a duet 3 eventually to replace this since both comes with far better SoC

I got the original; Duet in early 2021 because I do a lot of Twitch and UA-cam where I have to moderate, and thought just clicking the icons would be good enough, but I've come to realize that the speed and RAM aren't good enough to run Twitch consistently... some days it runs perfect and others it struggles to keep up. And that's with running Twitch in the browser because the app isn't good for what I need it for. I'm planning on upgrading to the Duet 5 not only for more screen real estate, but the upgraded RAM to go with it that hopefully lets things run more smoothly.

I've been using a Chromebook detachable as my daily driver for a couple of years now, and I use a full-size Bluetooth keyboard, so my device is always in its slate form factor. It's really nice to always be able to just grab it and go without having to detach the keyboard when I want to go sit on the couch or run off to a meeting. Can't wait for the sweet spot the Duet 3 11" is gonna bring size-wise!

I bought the Duet 5 to replace my HP Spectre X360 and an old iPad.
I used the HP to work on it and while it is a convertible I wanted to play Android games with Bluestacks. Finally, never really used it that way, too complicated, not smooth,... so I used it only to work with, and only when I was outside (so not so often) because I got a desktop computer.
I use the Duet 5 far more often than I used my HP and my old iPad. Everyday I play Android games on it, without keyboard, and when I want to work or browse the web I snap the keyboard and there we go.
I'm almost in love with ChromeOS. This + Android apps + Linux apps... I'ts a fantastic product.

Yes, that is my conclusion as well; The best tablets are 8-11 inches. Hybrids are 13 inches where you can use as either a tablet or laptop but the latter should be your main user-case. Whilst 15-inch like the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra are purely in the laptop realm and lose most of the reasons why you buy a tablet for media consumption. That is where I start with what I should buy and then decide the OS and then the price.

Hm - interesting. For me it is just vice verse: I prefer big tablets for media consumption, especially for videos. I LOVE big screens and the 13.3 inch screen with the 16.9 acpect ratio of Lenovos Duet 5 is quite overwhelming. I love to watch videos on a long flight (watching on an OLED display is superior to any screen of the airlines), i love to see Eurosports on that tablet etc. pp. - actually i only bought it for watching media contents and i love it. As i dont need the keyboard, any laptop with a comparable screen is still way heavier. Actually, i would go for the Samsung Tab S8 Ultra, but i got the Lenovo Duet 5 for 465,-€(!) whereas the Samsung starts at 1.200,-€, quite a difference. Size matters for media consumption as well.

I've had my original Duet for over two years now. Picked it up not long after it came out for $260 at Walmart. I bought it to replace my company ipad that I had to turn in when I retired. It is a very sutable replacement. Yeah, it's not nearly as snappy as a the ipad, and I ocassionaly have to reboot it to fix some minor glitch, but for the money, you can't beat this thing. Very satisfied. The Duet 5 looks awesome too, but I don't know that I can justify getting a 13 inch device when I have a 14 inch Lenovo laptop running Windows 11 that gives me the extra horsepower and screen size I need for doing the more demanding stuff. But, my Duet is still my go to travel device when I don't need the full featured experience.

I have a 12 inch Lenovo Android tablet. It's my primary computing device. I often wish it ran Chrome OS instead though. Android works best with the apps full screen. My tablet's Android build has "productivity mode" which allows windowing, but it's very flaky. Many apps get unstable with it, and even the ones that are stable will go to a phone mode where the UI is simpler.
So, I'm very interested in a 11-13 inch Chrome based Lenovo tablet. Though I hate buying things I already have, so I will probably wait until my current tablet starts to feel old.

They would most likely be around the same price, with the iPad being cheaper most likely around $460 with a keyboard. The Duet 3 starts at $399 without the ram upgrade. I care more about longevity than weight since this would just be recreational for me.

I have too many gadgets. I have the original duet, which was a fine form factor, but too underpowered for me. I've also purchased the duet 5, which is fine but a little cumbersome as a tablet. I also have way too many other toys, but the one I grab the most is the iPad. Now, I mostly consume on it, with occasional communications like mail/teams. However, there are plenty of articles and videos of people using their ipads for work, so I know it can be done. I really think IOS is the better tablet OS (designed for being controlled with your fingers). And the apps for IOS are better than android, at least on tablets.
My general advice for people looking for a tablet is iPad. I do hope that chromeos starts to give apple a run for thier money at some point.

Really good. Battery Life is awesome : 19 hours. The screen is really good. If Lenovo can upgrade this duet 5’s model, I recommand a better sound and Aldo a better connection between the screen and the keyboard. To easy to separate, I’ll prefer a button to separate like Microsoft surfacebook.

Are we still getting a separate review of the Duet 3? I'm really considering replacing my 10 inch Duet with it this year. Don't think I'd need the bigger size because in November I replaced my Spin 13 with a surface pro 7. So this would be my tablet for recreation mostly, as opposed to a work computer. Just don't know if it's worth the money to get a new one yet.

    • @cptbardo
      @cptbardo 2 роки тому

I can take a stab at this question. According to Alexander Kuscher (Senior Director of product management at Google), Android is intended for "Productive Mobility" (content consumption is the top priority), whereas ChromeOS is intended for "Mobile Productivity" (active work is the top priority). So if you're using the tablet mostly for media consumption, and there's an app for everything you need, then Android should make the most sense. If you're browsing or actively interacting with the web, ChromeOS will probably make the most sense.
If we're directly comparing Android/ChromeOS Tablets, ChromeOS has three major "advantages" in my opinion: 1) You get a full desktop web browser that supports extensions. 2) ChromeOS devices aren't reliant on the manufacturer to push updates. If you buy a ChromeOS tablet, it will get security and feature updates up until the AUE date. If you buy an Android tablet, you'll be lucky to get updates for more than one year, and they might come months after Google releases the updates. 3) This one doesn't really apply to personal users, but it's much easier to Administer ChromeOS devices. You join them to Gsuite and they're encrypted and secured out of the box. You can set them up as guest/multi-user devices very easily. So they're just flat out better for businesses/schools.
