This is so real, I started calculus this year, and honestly the hardest part is the basic multiplication, you get so use to dealing with algebra that you neglect multiplication and division and so you may be able to differentiate and integrate in seconds, but then you see 18 x 5 and you have to draw out the whole column method and it takes you twice as long.
My teacher is a genius as well who literally comes up with calculus equations in his head for us in seconds and he solves them just as fast and the only time he messes up is by accidentally doing simple multiplication wrong or putting the wrong sign. And it’s like you see in this video, he doesn’t even need to complete it, he just looks at it and is like “wait, this isn’t adding up, what’s wrong, oh there.”

This literally happened to me ealier. I was playing with math, writing and computing just for fun. I was computing for the hypothenuse of the triangle with sides 7 and 15. So I wrote 7²+15²=c². 7² was quite easy but 15 was hard.
    2
    15
    x15
    ---------
    75
    +15
    ---------
    125
And immediately, you can see what's wrong. But somehow, I missed it completely. I continued writing, "49+125=174, √174=√c², 13.19=c". After some time, I felt like something was wrong after looking at it. I checked my calculator, and I was a hundred off from 15². It's supposed to be 225 but I forgot to add the carry from when I multiplied it. The correct answer is 16.55. My answer is so far from the correct answer 😭.

I once got a math problem in Linear Analysis where I was supposed to prove some formula or something, and then I noticed one mistake during my calculations which forced me to rewrite 2 full papers, and I only had 15 minutes left. That was the most stressful exam I have ever done.

This is a prime example of why math teachers spend more time on things like number decomposition and the Distributive Property (over addition). 😁 Interestingly, I've come across a number of math professors that have said they can't stand doing arithmetic. At first, I thought they were joking, but they were really serious.

Contrary to what most people think, having a degree in mathematics doesn't make you a calculator. Not only is what happened to blackpenredpen completely normal, but anyone who has sat through upper level and graduate level mathematics classes will observe the same thing over and over again. People with PhDs in mathematics from very prestigious universities will make these exact same kinds of mistakes, usually many, many times in a semester. This even happens when the material is clearly well rehearsed by the professor. In general, the social norm amongst mathematics students is to scream out the error as soon as you recognize it, to save the professor as much embarrassment as possible; the faster the error is shouted out, the easier it is for the professor to make it seem like it was a very casual misstep, and allows them to save face. "Ah, yes, right you are! And blah blah..." The truth is simply so many things people take for granted with mental calculation are just completely unnatural. This particular one, 6 times 8, has been cited in the mathematical literature as one particular combination that people often get wrong on the spot, and often have to resort to the basic calculation steps to do.
Normal people, however, still think of mathematics like medieval people did, as some kind of contest of minds. These are people who are impressed by parlor tricks of quick calculation, of the kind peddled by men like Jakow Trachtenberg, or by memorizing long strings of pointless numbers (pi digits).

There is a relevant correlation between math skills and intelligence, although calculation is negligibly positively correlated to higher intelligence, and long term memorization is only a part of the complete picture of intelligence as it would be treated by a comprehensive, professionally administered IQ assessment.
