    An excellent design. I have never seen better. It looks very comfortable, too, which would be unusual for an Adirondack chair. 😊
    The Morris Chair arms are a nice touch.
    Thanks for another great video. 👍

    I built two of these when it was part of an online class. Yes, they are comfortable. I made mine out of white oak as cypress wasn't available.
    Thanks Tom for the great class.

    My wife bought some old metal chair frames from a thrift store with the idea that I could do something with them . I believe they originally had 3 or 4 inch cushions in them. I ended up creating a seat and back rest very similar to what you did on this chair . And I used 8/4 cypress with the back rest and seat slats cut so the quarter sawn side facing out. I tried to include a few pictures but UA-cam doesn't allow adding pictures to a comment.

    As a boater I always had custom Sumbrella covers made for outdoor furniture.

      That’s interesting. I’m not a boater, as much as I’d like to be. But I will have to check those out. Thank you 👍😎

    Just saw a video where the builder used Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy to seal the white oak he was using. Then he used Total boat varnish. I also saw a shipwrights use the same stuff, but he thinned it with denatured alcohol for even better penetration. The product sounds promising. Its supposed to stop rot and repair wood.

    I have put off sitting in a Adirondack chair because they look so uncomfortable.Tom you've done a wonderful job redesigning it makes me want to try and build one.

    Great/Super design, obviously there was a lot of effort put into developing it. And the band-saw technique lesson is appreciated. As an aside and just me thinking out loud here, I am wondering if the size might want to be adjusted depending on a person's height. Consider a 5' person sitting in the same chair as a 6' person.

    I laminated the curved back rest
    Made it in pine and painted them

    I've just finished building four of these, and thanks to your AMAZING course videos and full size plans, they all came out great! I will admit that I "cheated" and CAD-modelled a few of the more complex components and fitting templates so I could cut them on my CNC. And like another commenter, I raised the seat height, from 14" to 16", extending the back legs a bit along the same curve. Makes it a bit easier for us older folks to get ourselves out of the chair! One problem that arose was mildewing of the bare cypress after a rainstorm. So I have taken them back into the shop and am researching transparent finishes while waiting for warmer weather to take them outside to spray them. It looks like there may be some kind of penetrating finish on the chair in this episode? If so, can you share what you used and any recommendations? Thanks again!!

      So I wound up spraying my chairs with Penofin Ultra Premium Rosewood Oil, using their cedar color, which is the most clear color that provides 95% UV protection. Two coats and they are holding up well. It is an easy finish to apply and sprays well, so the accepted need to re-coat them periodically not all that daunting.

    I made 10 of those. But I changed them after the first one. I found them to be far too low for me. I added 4 inches of height and re-engineered the back legs. I felt if I had continued with the curve as it is, I felt it might crack. So I cut the rear legs back a bit, then added another piece using a half lap joint. So the real legs have a "knee" of sorts. I gave some away to my neighbors. Then I made some tables to with them. 😊

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  9 місяців тому

      Nice Dave, I’m all for customizing as best suits your preferences. Probably a good move to not ask too much of the back leg curve after you raised them the four inches.
      As I said in the video, I tried and measured quite a few versions and classics and the seat and arm height reflect what landed as the best all around, that is is you like the low rider feel of the classic Adirondack. Glad you enjoyed making them! By the way, if you are in the Neighborwood could you share any photos of your version if you have them? I’m curious to see and I’m sure others there would like to see it as well. No worries if you’re not in there.
      Thanks again! 👍😎

      @@EpicWoodworking Yes it would be nice to have a higher version of your well designed chair, so seniors can get up easier. Do you see a simple way to raise the height without affecting the all important curve of the back leg?

    The double curved back is a lot older than a Grand Caravan mini-van. Check out the backs on Queen Anne dining room chairs. That double curve goes back to the 1750s. Incidentally, when Chippendale style replaced Queen Anne, a single curve back replaced the double on dining chairs.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  9 місяців тому

      Thanks Bill. Yes, I am aware of the Queen Anne chair double curved back as well…I have custom made around forty of them in my earlier years while in North Carolina at a time when people appreciated nice eighteenth century furniture more than today… and quite a few sets of Chippendale chairs as well, most often in Honduran Mahogany when it was more available and affordable.
      I didn’t mean to imply in the video that the double curve first occurred on the Caravan, but only that I used that particular car seat curve to scribe for the shape I used on the Adirondack because I found it to be particularly comfortable.
      From your comment I assume you have a strong appreciation for eighteenth century furniture as I do.
      Thanks for watching! 👍👍

      I bought an Adirondack from an Amish builder who used branches for the backs.
      You end up sitting in a bunch til you find one that matches your back :)

      Sure do Robert -- we have special events and Classes, as well as Online Courses. In fact there is one for this very chair: www.epicwoodworking.com/product/ac. We enjoy the In-Shop learning, but love how the Online learning offers the opportunity to engage in the creative, making process for more people who might not be able to get here. We'd love to connect with you - visit epicwoodworking.com. Thanks for watching!

    That back curve looks to be heavily influenced by James King, did you get inspired by him?

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  9 місяців тому +1

      No, I’ve never heard of him. I explain in the video I actually made the curved template for the back by scribing the curve of the drivers seat of my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan…very comfortable 👍😎
