  • Texas has long been known for its robust quail populations, but habitat loss has impacted all four quail species in the state. Though their homes range from desert floodplain and brush land to prairie grasslands, these quail species need native habitat to thrive. Find out how researchers, non-profits, and landowners and managers are working together to keep quail numbers healthy statewide.

    Lots of fond memories of hearing Bob White quail chirping away at my father's place near Three Rivers many years ago. South Texas has a special place in my heart. I'm glad these folks and the land owners have got together to help these birds.

    Thank you for what is being done for habitat for these birds. It's good to know there are people who care enough.

    Kudos to the restoration team and to the landowners that are invested in these quail projects! May these efforts see numbers increase in time so that they are once again plentiful.

    Thank you, Texas! Unlike my native Florida, you're doing what''s needed to save wildlife (Florida plants houses the way you plant prairie grasses). I'm so glad that I moved here - my buddy, Lyle, said it was alright!

    I just love how their plumes stick through those crates. Quails are such little chatty birds.

    I live in Dewey Arizona and we have blue quail everywhere out here, they are learning to thrive in suburban communities and i do all i can to support native wildlife of all kinds on my property. Just in my small yard which has a section of native habitat that was never touched when the house was built, we get deer, javelina, owls, hawks, quail, king snakes, toads, hummingbirds, butterflies and bees galore. Bird species are increasing as we increase the variety of food we put out. My yard isnt even an acre!

    If you are a landowner, you must get involved in native grass restoration. That is want it will take to see a future for quail.

      It's not only good for the quail but also it is needed to replenish the natural aquifers for fresh water and springs.

    The pesticides killing the bugs they eat have a huge impact. Lightning bugs and Bob whites were common as recently as the 1980s

      dang, that sucks. They (fire ants) are also an invasive non native species so that makes sense.

    My dad, my brother and I have hunted blues and bobwhites from Hockley County to the NM border. We were Always taught to Never kill out a covey! But those lands have been leased out by people with way more money than cents/sense! If your paying big money to hunt for quail, your gonna shoot everything you see. Thus killing out covies that will never be back in that place. We always new that under this or that bush there would be a covey. It was that way for all the years we hunted together. I haven't seen blues in these parts for years. Big money hunters don't bring or buy ethical hunting that the old timers lived by. No on the ground skillet shots. If you can't flush them you don't shoot them. I have watched hunters in OK.,where my dad was from, and hunters from TX. with over and under shot guns and flush or their doge flush way too far from the hunters and then the full choke 12 ga. may reach out to get the long flyers. My dad hunted with a 20 ga. Browing auto. and consistently would kill 3 birds on a covey rise. Good dogs that hold and honor the points of the other dogs and we could always get the covey up from under feet. One way to help in the conservation of the 4 breeds talked about in this video is hunter knowledge of hunting practices and a few more Game Wardens to check the limits of hunters and fine them for over hunting. JMO Y'all!!

      @Rosalinda626 4 роки тому +1

      Kenneth Underwood that’s what I was thinking as well. Repopulating wont help if you don’t take care of their predators. But my heRt goes out to good people making the effort. Pray it works. Good luck to them.
