I remember when i was in elementary and highschool i always joined on different school competition for cartooning , and shading is very important it gives life to your drawing. sadly i stopped drawing after college , these videos encourage me to continue what i enjoyed doing before .
All I can say is don't give up lol, I stopped drawing when I entered high school and have only recently started again after a couple years of university. Definitely glad I got back into it and have been having a lot fun (even though I kinda suck rn ngl)
The limbic system doesn't care about logic philosophy and rhetoric. It wants what feels good. People overdosing on sidewalks aren't insane. The part that knows what you should do and the part that guides what you actually do aren't connected. You have to make drawing your addiction. This means giving up your phone and the internet. If you get on your phone when you wake up and again when you take a break, I promise you're hard wiring yourself to hate drawing. The solution is don't touch your phone in the morning, not even to check the time. Eat breakfast and get your coffee and whatever and when that sense of boredom creeps in, that's when you draw. Your brain is going to fight hard to get you to do anything else on your breaks (every 20-25 minutes and stop when you're excited, don't keep pushing into frustration) but it's vital you create a loop where you're enjoying drawing and wanting to get back to it on your breaks. Jung's philosophies on psychology are good for a lasting understanding of yourself but drawing is simple behavioral psychology: create an environment where the thing you want to get good at is the most fun thing in the room. P.S. Reward systems are the most flawed thing society has came up with. Doing something hard then doing something fun isn't rewarding the difficult behavior it's rewarding the fact that you quit doing it. That's exactly how Pavlov would train a person to hate drawing
the way you draw the faces so effortlessly is amazing. I can't do that without very detailed guidelines unless i have a photo reference! You're amazing!
Another way to get a better idea of toning is to have a miniature face sculpture, an action figure from the shop would work. Observing and learning the toning by placing the light from multiple angles also helps a lot. This tutorial gives a very good explanation of prioritizing different shadows. It is also necessary to have a good idea about the way the muscles are distributed over the face. Basically, face anatomy, for toning faces.
I'd love more videos on the comic art style. It's a very unique style to me and a lot of other people who never thought about doing it another way than your usual anime or cartoony. It's also amazing to help with other aspects of other styles
I was so freaking excited for this episode. Huge fan. Thanks to Proko and David Finch for this amazing video! Would love to see more like this in the future :).
Thanks for the tips. The arrow pointing the light source really helps. I wonder if comics have some different way of approach to ambient occlusion shading
To me comic shading is like negative space...instead of drawing a shape and shading the light, you use the shading to give the illusion of a shape and ignore all the logic of light
If two objects are facing the same way why would the taller objects be blacked out wouldn't it just be the cast shadow going half way up the taller chimney
As he mentions in the video, it's purely for the sake of driving the composition and pushing that separation between layers of space. It's not fully based in reality. But when you use it compositionally with a light direction that's otherwise consistent, our minds perceive it and make it make sense. That light/dark/light/dark pattern can be seen all over stylized comics. Poke through Mike Mignola's work for some really stark examples of this. the lighting can feel consistent even though it's a departure from reality.
Renaissance drawings and paintings very rarely have cast shadows falling anywhere onto the figure, if those said shadows would interfere with the illusion of creating planar depth. In my opinion, spending time on cast shadows (as opposed to shading) is an inefficient use of time, and it doesn't strengthen the overall finished work. Manga and the majority of comics until the end of the Golden Age didn't bother with them.
Most likely for better grip. Plus our hands form into a ball and have empty space so instead of holding our pencil intensely and getting cramps, he puts something for the ball of the hand to hold.

David finch competent and good communicator and beautiful voice
I just finished making a line art of drawing for my exam and I needed a tutorial for shading. This uploaded perfectly timed after that.
R.I.P
David Finch art work is stunning.
Now I have a little bit clearer how to shade my drawings. Thank you, Proko and David for this basic but truly useful video :D
I've been trying to understand for a while now which types of shadows to cross-hatch and which to leave hard-lined, but this sums it up quite nicely.
Shading has always been something I’ve struggled with ✍🏾 thx for making a tutorial
I like it ❤ It shows easy ways to create depths using shadows and shading .

Yeah it's what comic book artists, colourists and inkers call 'dynamic lighting'.....or more commonly known as 'making it up as you go along' 😂😂😂
How you always be uploading the right videos whenever I need them?
Thank you for this beautiful I can’t afford college or any online education so this really helps!
Do you have a shading clothes and hair video?
Great video 👍

internalize the renderer, capture the light in your mind

does anyone know where i can get a pencil like his
(While Miller, Waid, and the like are incomparable, Finch, he's the greatest - period.)
Any Ideas on how to draw the complex parts of mechs and robots. Just a little beyond the simple forms making the design look believable

Why do you have a bunch of tape around your pencil in the middle?
