I'm an Iowa gal trying to get into hockey- we aren't a super fan area, but there are some teams around. Many people's attitude is "you can't be a fan if you don't know everything the game" but they also won't help teach you 🤷🏼♀️ you have been so helpful!
I'm sorry to hear that. Not everyone like to teach which is fine, but everyone should be inclusive. I'll never understand why some people don't want other people to enjoy what they enjoy. Glad to help you learn and feel free to ask questions here. I'll be having more NHL 101 videos coming out soon!
I just saw my first hockey game about a month ago when my friend convinced me to watch a local junior league game. I'm now OBSESSED with hockey. Your videos are so informative as I'm starting with no knowledge. Also, I used to live in Seattle and so, of course now I'm a Kraken fan. Thank you for making these videos. They're so helpful!
Great videos, I'm a UK fan who just started watching hockey this season. Struggling to decide on a team to follow I began following the leafs and the bolts to learn the game. Then I learned about the Kraken coming into existence and decided to make that my team going forward since its a fresh start and the timing couldn't be better. So far I've watched every game of the two teams I previously mentioned and have learnt loads. Completely obsessed now.
You’re the best. The Firebirds are our hometown team now and the past year has been all about discovering how awesome hockey is. Taking a few learn to play classes now, but our scrimmages are a bit chaotic, so it’s REALLY nice to finally be able to understand positions and roles a bit better. 🙌
That's awesome! I also cover the Kraken on the channel so I follow the Firebirds pretty closely. I didn't grow up playing hockey so I actually did learn to play a few years back. Understanding what should happen and then actually doing it can be two very different things lol
I love baseball, football and basketball and just received a Kraken jersey for my birthday so I need to learn hockey! Their first ever preseason game today! I can just tell I'll love it. The culture is awesome and the sport is so visually pleasing, if a little confusing. Anyway thanks for the vid!
Welcome to hockey! If you watch basketball I'm sure you'll pick up hockey just fine. Obviously pretty different sports, but the free flowing nature of them provides some important similarities as well. Everyone who gives it a chance ends up loving it!

Thanks again 🦑💙🩵🤍

It's a fast game too so it's easy to miss things, and don't worry there are plenty of big moments in the future!
Glad you enjoyed it! I haven't done a video specifically about line changes, but I could add that to the list. Was there a specific part of line changes you were curious about?
@@CheapSeatsSports That would definitely be helpful. I was wondering how those line changes work since they are usually performed in their specific groups. But as far as I see it it‘s inevitable, that over time they kinda get mixed up. So the question would be what the coaches do to get them back together. Also I would ask you if you know of any good sources for beginners to get an introduction to general strategies that get applied in hockey. I already found some stuff that elaborated on cycling, forechecking, some defensive strategies and so forth but I would like to dig a little bit deeper. So in case you know of any good sources that would be much appreciated ;) Cheers from Germany, keep up the good work, you got yourself a new follower ;)
Personally I don't get people that gate keep. If you really enjoy something you should want it to continue to improve and be able to share it with more people. So hey, if I can help that happen in any little way then I don't see any reason not to!
Nice! It's such a fun sport to watch in person. Since tonight's game is against the Islanders it might not be the highest scoring, but a slower pace of play will make it easier to follow!
With defensive pairings you tend to see an offensive guy paired with a stay at home defenseman. In some cases you will have guys who are all around good defenseman, on their top pairing. Ducan Keith and Brent Seabrook are a good example of a top pairing, that was good defensively and offensively. They both could play on the power play and could kill penalties.
I originally made these that same purpose when Seattle joined. I wasn't expecting another new team this soon but I'm always glad to see them helping new fans!
Thank you for the best video reagarding thius issue so far, What are the rules regarding substitutions? What fores too many men on the ice? And what are the differences between NHL and global hockey rules? Both genarally and regarding substitutions. Thank you.
For the most part teams can substitute whenever they want. I'm not as familiar with the smaller rule differences in European leagues but I think its relatively the same across hockey. There are a couple exceptions though: Teams can't sub after icing (for more on that: ua-cam.com/video/6nZt2HcA-bc/v-deo.html) and substitutions must happen with both players within 5 feet (~1.5 meters) from the bench, if they fail to do so and more than 5 skaters are on the ice at one time that is when too many men is called. I hope that answers your questions! The only BIG difference in some European hockey is the size of the ice (it's much bigger in Olympic and some euro league play).
Hockey is fast and action packed! That makes it really fun to watch but can also make it seem hard to learn or maybe overwhelming to someone who is totally new. Once you understand it at least a little tho it's amazing.
@@CheapSeatsSports yeah most definitely! I actually checked out my first full NHL game today when I watched the LA Kings vs Oilers game 7 tonight (on TV) . It was def action packed!
Nice, well presented video. I've never heard the Power Play and Penalty Kill players called a team. They're commonly referred to as units and typically there's 2 sets of each.
If you live near a team and can go to a team store to try a jerseys on I'd recommend that for sure. If you don't have the ability to do that 54 or maybe 56 if you want a looser fit is what I'd say is best guess.
I have one for playoffs and scheduling as well as one for the draft, tho that has changed a little since I made that one as noted in the comments. I can definitely do one on player signing
Liked the video , Boston Sports Fan from 🇿🇦💯☘ Hopefully Bruins will bring better joy than the Celtics this year. #BostonStrong617 #BEANTOWN #DirtyWater
I actually don't really watch nhl (as the streaming service is among the most expensive out therel, but ive bought nhl 18 for the ps4 and these vids are pretty helpful for that too! So thanks!💪
They are switching to ESPN+ for their streaming next season which is pretty reasonable at the moment. But yeah it can be hard to follow if you don't have easy access to watch it.
@@GhostDelta04 Good question. Usually yes lines transition roughly at the same time, but there is no rule that they need to. So players on the same line can change at different times. Shifts are tend to be short so they do usually change together but sometimes a star player may stay out longer for example.
I start watch nhl hockey few month ago and now Im extreeme supporter of Carolina Hurricanes 😅 and Im from Bosnia 🇧🇦😁💙 every game I have to wait till 2-3 oclock in the morning
I am from Alabama, we have HAVOC as our hockey team. not a big hockey state...I went to my first game 2 days ago, but always liked seeing things about hockey. After that game with a WIN of 4 to 3 in OT, it was AWESOME watching these guys chase that tiny puck flying around the rink, while the sticks popped, and the puck pin balling at 100mph, hearing the sound of the puck POP as the goalie stopped it. LETS SAY HOCKEY HAS A NEW FAN...so far i have picked Penguins, Pittsburg, as my mains, and Anaheim and Avalanches as my seconds. since Colorado is my second home cause i used to go see my aunt there. But Alabama college team is pretty decent, nothing like their football team...but man HOCKEY IS SO MUCH BETTER its like FOOTBALL on ICE and insanely fast paced..its like someone took boring soccar, smushed in football, and a touch of rugby...put it on ice, and said NOW HERE IS A REAL GAME.
Love it! And yeah I couldn't agree more about how great a game it is. It would be way more popular if it was easier to pick up and play and also if the NHL would stop getting in their own way. Glad you are enjoying it and happy to help in the learning process!
@@CheapSeatsSports I appreciated the videos on the game no doubt. Any suggestions on how to watch games, and see the line ups, cause sadly Alabama local stations do not cover NHL, i dont have NHL channel. but i do have youtube TV.. ESPN and my Sports network not sure..as i never watched sports till now. is there a website that has all the games on it, that i can pick and watch the recorded games.
I've played deck hockey for 8 years and while it's fundamentally different from ice it's practically the same but I thought I'd give this a watch anyway
I have a question about the goalie/ goaltender . I notice if a team is losing by 2 points , that they will take their goalie and turn him into an attacker in return leaving an empty net, . wouldnt this action artificially mske it a PP and a PK because its 6 on 5 and not even strength ?
It serves a similar purpose to a Power Play of making sure that team has an advantage and will likely spend a lot of time with the puck, but it isn't technically a power play since there is no penalty and the team with 1 less skater can still get icing called on them.
@@CheapSeatsSports ok one more question . if a penalty happins when the goalie is an attacker . would offset the PP scese they already have the advantage ?
@@kratosbelmont if a team who is on the penalty kill (one less player) commits another penalty then they go down another player while the two power plays overlap (so it would be 5 skaters vs 3). If a team is on the power play and they commit a penalty then they lose a player and while the power plays overlap it's 4 vs 4 (plus goalies).
Most of their job is in preparing the team, picking specific schemes and strategies, what parts of the game to emphasize and so on. They are also the ones that pick who plays on what line and defensive pair. In game their biggest impact is changing lines if needed and deciding who goes on the ice and when.
As someone who's familiar with pretty much all teams ports aside from hockey, hockey seems so incredibly weird. Like why it's called lines instead of first team/second team, how substitutions can happen all the time with no stoppage, why there isn't much talk of formations and everybody basically plays the same formation etc. Also, having just watched one of my first full hockey games yesterday, I'm shocked by the willingness of players to give up blatant penalties. You know it's gonna hurt your team immensely, but you still choke slam a guy to the ground lmao. Penalties are still abundant in a sport like football, but most of them are pretty accidental(holding facemask etc). And overall it seems strange how coaches don't lose their shit at stupid penalties. I'm not saying I dislike any of this stuff, it's just such a culture shock, it'd be like moving to Japan or something.
The constant line changing is definitely a fairly unique thing to hockey, but is also necessary for players to stay fresh as it is incredibly demanding physically. Penalties in hockey are... well it's a culture thing. Like the NFL where holding happens on every play but is only called if it's obvious, there are a lot of penalties that go uncalled. Which can sometimes make the line of what you can and can't get away with hard to find. It's a very physical game (especially in the NHL) and sometimes guys take that too far in the heat of the moment. Classic hockey culture has always been mostly stoic and unemotional from the coach especially. So while it might not seem like they get pissed off by a bad penalty, believe me they do. Usually they will deal with it after a game and possibly sit that player for the next game. Also as for plays and formations, they do exist as well, it's just hard to see until you get to know the sport better. I don't watch much basketball ball so that looks like the same thing over and over again or just street ball to me but I know it's not.
man, I'm sad, that I'm the only one who likes Hockey, the story that I'm about to tell you might spin your head and brain a bit. so, I'm a huge hockey fan, as an Indonesian (only sliver of people here know of hockey maybe under a hundreds out of tens of millions). I've been a fan since 2006 when Sydney Crosby, Malkin, and Flower made their debut xD My friend are the one who introduced me to hockey back in middle high school. now, my circle in which I and my old friend in, is a huge sports fans and we've been together since elementary school, and turns out I'm the only person who likes hockey, my friend doesn't follow it anymore (only know of the game which he introduced me hockey on). Now, the group seems to be interested in hockey and ask what is it, i try to give them this video, and they ask "what is this? we are not interested in hockey, but please tell us more," im baffled on what their statement is, so I share more newbie friendly stuff about hockey, and they keep being angry with me, like, I don't know what the fuck they want, they said they are interested, but doesn't want to give a fuck about it. I flip my shit and said if they're adult enough to get married, don't force me shit to feed on your mouth with stuff that you're not even interested in. now, im proud to be alone, they're really harsh to me, I used to respect them as a friend, but now it seems like they're not even considering me as a friend in their circle. all the time they discuss is playing games and hang out at stuff without mentioning me at all. I'm sorry if this story mess up your brain, Im not a good English speaker. but this really burns me out and let me down. im sorry.
All good my guy! Respect you for following a sport you are geographically far from! As for your friends, all you can do is try, if they aren't interested then that's on them. Don't loose sleep over it and if hockey isn't for them that's fine, it's ok if it's not for everyone. Hope all is well with you! As far as your English I understand it fine mostly! Not perfect, but far better than I can speak anything not English so it's impressive.
@@CheapSeatsSports appreciate it man.. thank you. i decided to leave the circle entirely because they'll only deteriorate my health and mental condition, I'm an empath so everything will be absorbed either a positive energy outlook or a negative ones. I'd say I have a decent knowledge enough to entertain myself (so far), i happened to guess Kraken draft too xD i guessed about 13 of their picks.
@@CheapSeatsSports completely understandable mistake, but a very funny sentence nonetheless: "while all positions do have their stars in the NFL, the biggest stars tend to be centers." Thanks for the video.
@@CheapSeatsSports yea it is very similar both play style and positions the only thing that hokey doesn’t have is attack men on the defense. I play it for my school

Here 30 mins before the Krackens first preseason game!!!! Im excited nervous confused all of the above!!
Awesome video. Can't wait for our Utah hockey team
I originally made these that same purpose when Seattle joined. I wasn't expecting another new team this soon but I'm always glad to see them helping new fans!
That was an excellent video.... nice job
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, really helpful! Thanks Cheap Seats!
Glad to hear it!
Thank you for the best video reagarding thius issue so far,
What are the rules regarding substitutions?
Thanks for the explanation! Just checking out other sports I never really watched that might interest me now
Hockey is fast and action packed!
Thanks for explaining lines! Genuinely didn't know about this :)
Jumping ship from NFL to NHL thanks
Glad to help!
Nice, well presented video. I've never heard the Power Play and Penalty Kill players called a team. They're commonly referred to as units and typically there's 2 sets of each.
Unit is probably more common you are correct, but "team" also gets used some. I've at least heard some players call it that.
Great vid bro, thanks!
No problem, Thanks for watching!
What size jersey should I purchase? I’m 6’5 230 pounds and usually wear an XL in shirts and sweatshirts.
If you live near a team and can go to a team store to try a jerseys on I'd recommend that for sure. If you don't have the ability to do that 54 or maybe 56 if you want a looser fit is what I'd say is best guess.
Yes. I am the exact person you were referring to!
thanks for this video man!
Happy to help!
Can u make a video explaining how the tournament scheduling, playoffs, Draft, Player signing works?
I have one for playoffs and scheduling as well as one for the draft, tho that has changed a little since I made that one as noted in the comments. I can definitely do one on player signing
@@CheapSeatsSports Thank you!
Great video!
Thanks!
Great explanation ty
No problem!
loved the vid...tryin to learn about hockey and nhl !!
Awesome! Welcome to the sport and thanks for the support! If you have any questions feel free to ask.
@@CheapSeatsSports i have a question. If one player goes to bench for a break does everyone in that line go too?
@@GhostDelta04 Good question. Usually yes lines transition roughly at the same time, but there is no rule that they need to. So players on the same line can change at different times. Shifts are tend to be short so they do usually change together but sometimes a star player may stay out longer for example.
@@CheapSeatsSports thank you!
Could you please explain how exactly a team goes offsides.
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/6nZt2HcA-bc/v-deo.html
LOVE THIIIIIS OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

Thanks for stopping by! I've never played deck hockey, sounds fun!
Great vid
Thanks glad you enjoyed it!
From Australia an straight up easy why I like it.
Just subscribed! I'm number 997. 3 more for 1k.
Thanks I got invite to a game tonight, I have no clue what to expect.
Hockey in person is the best, even if you don't understand everything fully. You'll understand in time!
Thank you!

Watching this video to prepare for Kraken season haha.
That was the original inspiration!
@@CheapSeatsSports alright thank you bro . for answering my question
@@kratosbelmont no problem
What is offside and onside
I have a video for that as well! ua-cam.com/video/6nZt2HcA-bc/v-deo.html

He read my mind 😳🥰
how do hockey coaches make a difference?
Most of their job is in preparing the team, picking specific schemes and strategies, what parts of the game to emphasize and so on. They are also the ones that pick who plays on what line and defensive pair. In game their biggest impact is changing lines if needed and deciding who goes on the ice and when.
i just got into hockey, the hardest part is choosing a favorite team before the season starts on tuesday🤣 my state doesn’t have a hockey team sadly
I've heard good things about the Seattle Kraken ;)
@@CheapSeatsSports but you see as a packers fan i can’t ever like anything from seattle 😂😂😂
@@owenlewis4402 Mason Appleton (one of Seattle's promising young forwards) if from Greenbay.
Not that it helps my argument but go Bengals today ;)
My coach wanted me to watch this

It was!
@2:10 "Bad" 😂😂
Excellent, I remember I had to learn all of this on my First Totem game. LOL
Go Kraken! 🦑
Go Kraken!
Let's Go Blues!!!
I was definitely happy they beat Boston for the cup a few years back
man, I'm sad, that I'm the only one who likes Hockey, the story that I'm about to tell you might spin your head and brain a bit.
so, I'm a huge hockey fan, as an Indonesian (only sliver of people here know of hockey maybe under a hundreds out of tens of millions).
Lol, you said "NFL" @4:09
Probably, even if I do more NHL stuff at this point I still spend a lot of time looking at NFL stuff and the two acronyms can run together.
@@CheapSeatsSports Not probably, you definitely did. I understand why that happens though.
@@CheapSeatsSports completely understandable mistake, but a very funny sentence nonetheless: "while all positions do have their stars in the NFL, the biggest stars tend to be centers." Thanks for the video.
4:10, friend you said NFL. I’m no pro understander of either sport but I do know that “f” is for Football 🤨
NFL and NHL are very similar, when you follow both closely slip ups can happen. But yes hockey is the NHL
@CheapSeatsSports Dont forget the fifth line 😂
So it looks very similar to lacrosse
I've never played lacrosse so idk, but it looks similar from what little I've watched.
@@CheapSeatsSports yea it is very similar both play style and positions the only thing that hokey doesn’t have is attack men on the defense. I play it for my school
Lol dude my nick name when I played soft ball was cheap seats XD

I enjoyed the video but just wanted to mention that your mannerisms remind me a lot of MrBeast
Haha really? 50Mil subs here I come! Jk, quick cut editing style probably adds to that.

4:09 - NHL, not NFL! 😆
Yeah, at the time I was also doing NFL content and occasionally said the wrong one lol
You called it a goalie helmet??
Do you even hockey??
No one who is a fan of hockey, let alone a player will ever say that....
It's called a mask for a reason....
