Another method with the pencil is to scrape it against sandpaper. Then using a brush on the graphite build up on the paper, take some of it and put in on the areas you want on the kit. Sort of like dry brushing, but without paint.
A Dowadge! My first Gunpla ever! It's nice to see that I'm not the only one on the planet to have that kit! Even if your is modified in several place I see.
Been using this technique with flat topcoats and watercolor pencils (Faber Castell). Pencil detailing is seriously slept on. You can add anything from simple scratches and weathering on the corners to rust and moss stains and even burn effects.
ghostofzeon, i have to applaud sir im going to subscribe to your channel and stay tuned to your builds. thank you for sharing. The metallics in the pencil i know gives it a real detailed damaged look.
I'm not sure if you'll see this, but what were your results directly on plastic and then top coating to sceal? I got a good weathering going but I'm wondering if I should top coat it or just put it somewhere it won't be touched ever, mostly because I top coated too close to the sun (my kit lol) once and it smudged all my panel lining and I'm just scared of that lol
awesome video..I finished building an ez8 gundam and i wanted to make a diorama for it. Whats an easy to give it a desert combat type look? if that makes sense..thanks
+Yaoyao9 (リーフちゃん) It helps but it is not necessary. If it is on bare plastic, then it may smudge and wipe off easier but honestly, it wont matter if you top coat with a clear anyway.
+PikaPika? You can. Weathering can be done with either a flat or gloss coat. Things like washes need to be applied on gloss coats though and pigments are best to be applied on flat coats. But chipping and other effects can be done on either gloss of flat
TheGhostofZeon thanks for the advice! Also are there any cheaper alternatives to tamiya's flat coat/clear coat that could be purchased in australia? A few places like bunnings or SCA?
PikaPika? An alternative for gloss clear is Floor Polish (Extra Long Life Selleys) which can be air brushed on. To make it flat, you can get a jar of Tamiya acrylic "Flat Base" and add it to the floor polish to get a flat clear.
+Andi Erwin You can use any pencil you like. Keep in mind that the softer the pencil, then the better the result. The one I have used in this video is a softer lead than some which makes it a lot easier to apply the effects.
+johnboy384 eBay. Search for 3mm fishing lure eyes. You might have to wade through a lot of ones that look like fish eyes, but every so often the plain ones like these can be found. Alternatively, HiQ parts sells 'dome stickers' which are similar.

So brilliant in it's simplicity. Great results! Cheers!

+R Mac Thank you for you kind words and thanks for subscribing! :)
Genius! I'm definitely doing this with my next model.
Wow, So much better than dealing with messy painting.....how long do the pencil marks stay on for though?
Once you are done with it, you can always spray another top coat on top to seal in the pencil marks.
Really helpful tut, thanks for that bro!

Does this work on bare plastic? Or would it be better to put the pencil between 2 matte top coats?
It would work on bare plastic but not as good. It would be best to do a flat clear over the plastic first, then use the pencils, then top coat again.
Great tutorial
Thnx so much
Fantastic! Thank you sir thank you for this awesome tutorial 👍
Hey what model is,that u have there. My bf loves gundam so I want to get him one and I think he like that one.
It's a 1/144 scale Dowadge
interesting. I'll probably do this at some point
awesome video..I finished building an ez8 gundam and i wanted to make a diorama for it. Whats an easy to give it a desert combat type look? if that makes sense..thanks
Try using 7B pencil for a charcoal-like effect.
can i use this method even if i already top coated my kit with matte? i did not think of weathering my kit until i saw this video
thanks for the tutorial, gonna do this since this method is cheap
is this applyed to a painted surface or is this just on plastic models? because i have to say i am impressed
+R Mac It can be done on plastic or painted. In this case, I did it on painted.
hi, wont the pencil's shiny effect will lose if i add a matte topcoat?
Will you need to paint the kit first for the graphite to adhere better?
+Yaoyao9 (リーフちゃん) It helps but it is not necessary. If it is on bare plastic, then it may smudge and wipe off easier but honestly, it wont matter if you top coat with a clear anyway.
does this work on any plastic color? and i also apologize if tis is a dumb question
Voo Zhanli you need a brighter pencil for black and it won’t work on silver
whered you get Minerva Zabi pencils? 😋
Would you flat coat the kit first before weathering?
+PikaPika? You can. Weathering can be done with either a flat or gloss coat. Things like washes need to be applied on gloss coats though and pigments are best to be applied on flat coats.

TheGhostofZeon What about hairspray? Is that a viable option, or should I just get one of the things you already recommended?
bud i want ask, are we can use other pencil with different color for weathering? thx
+Andi Erwin You can use any pencil you like. Keep in mind that the softer the pencil, then the better the result. The one I have used in this video is a softer lead than some which makes it a lot easier to apply the effects.
+TheGhostofZeon softer pencil as like 2B sadler and faber castle right?
+Andi Erwin Yes, they would be fine.
+TheGhostofZeon ok thanks buddy
hi, wont the pencil's shiny effect will lose if i add a matte topcoat?
Where can I find those camera lenses?
+johnboy384 eBay. Search for 3mm fishing lure eyes. You might have to wade through a lot of ones that look like fish eyes, but every so often the plain ones like these can be found.
Alternatively, HiQ parts sells 'dome stickers' which are similar.
Hi where can i purchase these type of pencils? thanks
Any good stationary store.
its not a special weathering pencil haha its just a regular pencil
Sodapop Gaming i know that. what im asking was the specific brand of pencil he was using. I should have rephrased what i said :)
They are just standard lead pencils. Brand doesn't matter
yep thanks :)
Do it before using top coat right ?
Yes, top coat after to protect the weathering done.
will the pencil marks rub kff cuz when i did it it rubs off
If you put a clear coat over the top this wont happen.
Y my pencil can't make shine like your? Or I need to sanding the armor first?
+Cambodia Figures Make sure you use a soft pencil like the one I use in the video, harder types wont give the shiny look.
BRO _SAD +TheGhostofZeon can i use 2b penc8l?or other types?
Does Faber Castell or Mongol Pencils work?
If they are soft pencils, then they should work.
You could see your reflection in the mono eye,it looked like he was looking at you lol.
Is that gunpla a non-grade?
It's an old kit from the 80's/90's
Thanks
can I try this on my 1\100?
+Kyle McPherron Yes, you can do this on any scale model, all you need to do is make sure you keep in scale when applying.
+TheGhostofZeon worked really well. thank you.
Does stay on?

twentyfoursevensmoke thanks
bud i want to ask again, are this kit is already been top coat or not? thx
+Andi Erwin This had a clear coat applied before the weathering. Once it was done, I applied a flat clear top coat over the top.
+TheGhostofZeon ok thx
+TheGhostofZeon how do you apply the first clear coat? did you remove all the parts first? or you just sprayed it all over the assembled gunpla?
I do it both ways. Some kits, I do them in sub assemblies (like the arms, legs, etc) and some I do as a whole.
ok Thanks :)
very cheap but still very nice effect!
