Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

"Let's Go Katey" 👏👏 "Let's Go Katey" 👏👏
😆 😆
You can tell pops is proud of you bro.
Your numbers will go up every time you show Katie.
I concur
Yep!
I actually laughed out loud when dad is telling son how to lift the huge weights that he's not lifting. lol You're a patient man.
He was just questioning my choice to set them on the ground to make more work for myself!
Hi, i will always remain a loyal viewer of all your videos, truly enjoy them.
I appreciate that, Glen!
Glad to see the American farm family still exists. Thanks for the videos.
They still exist. Most of them just aren't making UA-cam videos!!!
I grew up on a farm. I remember every chore being very difficult in some way or another. Even though these guys have state of the art equipment, they still have their hands full with a great deal of strenuous physical labor and never enough time to get it done. My hats off to these guys and all the farmers that are true heroes in helping to make sure we have food on our tables every day. If I was younger I would go help these guys with no pay expected just to show them that America needs more folks just like them. Best of luck with the planting season.
I love your narration to these videos...
Appreciate the support!
Lenny is always the highlight of the show! He’s getting so big. What does he think about mommy having a baby in her belly? Getting ready to be the big brother. He’s so darn cute.
He sure is growing up fast. It is amazing and sad at the same time, so we do our best to enjoy all of the laughs and frustrations. I don't think that he fully understands the situation. It is hard to tell sometimes what they comprehend and what they don't, so I guess we will find out in August when he has a baby brother!
@@aTrippyFarmer my son graduates high school next month, turns 19 this month. Only child. Went so fast, but I don’t miss the terrible 2s. He was a nightmare. Can’t wait to see your new son in the tractor! Blessings to you & your wife.
@@aTrippyFarmer August, perfect timing between planting & harvesting!
Let’s go Katie!
Watching all these planting videos for 2023 is giving me the itch 😭 every time we get close, we either get frost warnings or rain! Have a safe season!
You sound like me watching the Texas farmers planting in February... best of luck!
Trippy, it was all hands on deck in this vid. Luv Marty’s depth measuring tool, his 2 fingers. He should patent that. You even talked your sister into a close up shot. The stars are aligned. It is going to be a good year! Keep it between the rows 🚜🌽🌽
Planting season gets every out and about! I sure hope it is a good year... thanks!
Good to finally see y’all killin it👌🏻You definitely have a knack for narration Andy 😎as always enjoy y’all’s family farm and the footage, keep em comin 🇺🇸💪🏻🇺🇸
Yes I am really good at talking for hours on end... 🤣
Love seeing the videos from a different farmers perspective. I farm in michigan and all we are getting is rain and we can’t plant. We’ve gotten 20 acres in and that’s it. Glad you guys are starting to plant. Safe season.
Looking good Andy nice debut best of luck
I didn't even realize this was an hour long video. I wish the developers of Farming Simulator would come out to your farm and learn how its actually done.
It is hard to pack such a complex variety of things into one game!
Thanks for taking us along again. Thanks for keeping it real too. Things don't always work great. Really appreciate the running commentary. Hopefully by the next day, things went smoothly.
Appreciate that!!!
Katie is beautiful ! That would be cool if she helped make videos ! I watch all the farm channels & you are my favorite channel ! I always watch to see how your farm is doing first !! Keep up the good work ! Great channel !!
We love our farmers!
Andy, Given all the new equipment and electronics. It was a very good first day. Hope tomorrow goes much smoother for you. You should equal or maybe even exceed Dad's production. God Bless.
Can’t wait for Katie to hit record. We may get another perspective of farming.
always a good time when Marty cracks the whip on young Andy!
Someone has to keep me in line!
when I was a wee youngster in 1968 I actually rode in the cart and put clay tile on the ramp down to the trench.....great times.
That sounds like a very fond memory. Those were probably the good old days! Thanks for the comment.
Hang in there Andy new machine and software can drive a man insane. Tomorrow is another day. I hope your sprayer gets delivered soon.
May have already Been so as I'm behind in my trippy vid.s
Peace out
Appreciate the encouragement!!
The 1st day back in the struggle bus is real... You got this.
If you don't struggle a little bit, you won't appreciate the good times!!
Wow! Been out of farming for quite a few years. With this new equipment, I would lose my Freakin mind. We are from the southeast and the size of your farms are blowing me away.
I've noticed from watching these channels that a lot of this newer equipment is 10 miles an hour when I was working on any farm 7 miles an hour was the fastest you could ever go but with this newer equiptment it sure seems strange going that fast across the field
Last video I think he said the one tractor has air conditioned massaging seats too 👀
Good luck this year Andy! Nice to see the 370 back out in the field. (We're still waiting for your review after planting season btw)
I will need to get a review out!
Got my free stickers. Thanks Trevor , your awesome
Lad enjoy the old boys while you still have them. I am an old boy now and I miss my dad and uncle’s hell I miss my grandfather and grand uncle’s, they fought and criticised each other and me but they would have died for each other, great men and great farmers, now I am the only one of my generation still farming with my sons and grandkids, we probably produce more in one year than all of them produced in their combined lifetimes and farm more land than they would believe but it was their work and wisdom that has us here. Best of luck with the planting.
I enjoy working with my family, and I sure do appreciate all of the opportunities that they have given me. I think it would be a disgrace to not give them a hard time occasionally. That's just what we do!
Hey Andy, The biggest loss of time on a farm is wheels and batteries. In my opinion. All tractor implements tires should come with run flat tires.
That's the truth. It's always the batteries that slow you down!!!
Here right through brother.
New Zealand.
👍👍
Awesome video Andy, hey Katie no hiding from the camera 🤪,go time even though y'all are already done planting, pretty cool, look forward to seeing y'all plant this year, can't wait to see the sprayer videos, your dad is a go getter, love seeing hard working folks get after it, thanks for sharing an god bless💪🇺🇲👌✊🤙
Does Katie have a yt channel
I live in Mount Vernon iL not far from your farm love John deer
I've been to Mount Vernon a few times... its a nice place! Thanks for watching!
Hey there Andy and Crew, I hope this finds you all well and good!
Using a "feeling that you had while transporting your planter" as a tool for determining how your tractor should be "ballasted" is a new one on me?
I would be willing to bet, that you should've been "removing" ballast, and not adding it.
When you were cultivating, you were concerned about seeing your tractor ruts, which reduces yield an average of 17%.
Reducing soil compaction by reducing the axle weight of your tractors, (along with everything else) is the most economical, and beneficial way to increase yields, and fuel efficiency, while reducing unnecessary wear and tear on your tractors.
I would love to come and bring a couple of students from Virginia Tech with me to do a "Soil Compaction Analysis" on one or two of your fields, however I find myself currently with neither time, or available students to travel to Central Illinois, however both of these should be remedied by Fall.
I hope y'all have a good one my friend!
"Nothing Runs Like A Deere" 🦌 👍 🇺🇲
Awesome Video and Much Love as Always!!
Good to seeing you guys up and running again, here's to a safe and trouble free planting season, best of luck with Katie videoing, looking forward to that, this year, stay safe out there ya all, your devoted fan from PEI Canada,
It is amazing how much ground a modern planter can cover. Much different than my experience in the 1980's, four rows at a time on an open station tractor.
That is an understatement, and we don't even run close to the biggest size planter. There are some that will lap us!
Troy sold me my John Deere tractor to. Good salesman.
We’ve worked with Troy for a long time. He is a good guy!
Nice video! Nice to see Lenny! Those electronic programs sure are complicated!
Great start to 2023 ! with all the bells and whistles on new equipment more often then not we don't see when you cant make the bells whistle or the whistles bell , its wonderful when we sit in the tractor of these million dollar rigs and we see how far we have come just within the life time of your dad ! what took 14days to plant 30 years ago now is done in days with less people ,i like long form videos but ill watch what ever format you end up on God bless you and yours and don't sweat the little stuff .
Thanks for the content always love seeing americas farmers doing what they do best 💪
Good luck getting all those seeds in the ground.
Good to see you guys out there planting. Just remember to breathe and as always good luck and God bless and stay safe out there.
Love the video Andy! Also when i was watching this I was on the school bus and when the tractor started beeping the bus driver thought it was the bus 😂
Haha that's too funny. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Very informative.
Iowa is planting pretty hard now
I'd believe it. Northern Illinois should be rolling hard now. I am bit further south, so we normally get started earlier.
@@aTrippyFarmer I noticed that but ones that one farmer gets out everyone is out. Lol
Some of the best drone footage of any of the farm channels comes from you so it is always great to see
Have great planting spring Andy and family! Love your channel what a great family you work with. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate that. Best wishes!
It's great to finally see Katy. Much easier on they eyes ❤
Love to hear some of her stories about your misadventures.
Very impressive family. 😂😅
Love your program! Thanks 😊
Good job explaining what your doing!
Yes there is a lot of explaining in this one… 🤕
I remember back in late 70s everybody had hard dirt clods the size of your head that only a forest city du-all, if anyone remembers that brand, would bring back into shape. There were times had to overlaphalf to reallywork good. 24 inches requires 25 inches of plastic tile to pop into place if I remember correctly. Battery specialist is best place for batteries, hands down.
Lemongrass. Cleans up your water from all the bacteria mold grime etc. Great for home use, too. Put some bee hives out there, wildflowers, black locust etc
Love the longer videos keep them coming
For every one person that loves them, another person hates them... 🤣
Hammer time.....
Hey greetings from Finland 😎 keep on working!👌
Great Episode Andy!! That’s some Mean Green Machines 💪🏼
Agreed!!!
Great video buddy! Didnt even realize it was just over an hour. You keep the videos very informative, interesting and sometimes funny. My favorite channel! Cant wait to see some spraying videos from ya.
Thanks, Jason. Some people don't enjoy the long videos. It is hard to keep everyone happy.
God work sir !
I know I’m a bit late to the show here, but that hissing noise at 49 minute mark sounds like cavitation.
It could've been some air trapped in the system... it's a non-issue at this point. The hydraulic downforce system is also notorious for vibrating/pulsing when not pushing against the ground.
Good job dude.. it's new to you and you will get a handle on it. Ur family seems to do a great job.
Appreciate that. There is always some learning to do!
Love Marty's red shirts! Lol
nice planter
Finally ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wicked bro
👍👍👍
Thank you!!!
If you would keep a battery tender on it , it would last a lot longer, but I’m sure you’ve never heard that lol 😂
Hit a button Marty give me beat.😅😅
Marty reminds me more of Rick than Morty 🤣
When you pull the scab 1 back to pick up the planter, how does it not turn off the seed delivery fan. Great video. I was getting soo anxious to watch this first video of you finally planting!
boy doesn't she look cute with her arms folded.
wow,,planting allready...i now believe u have 3-4000 acres with the equipment i see atrippy
that new db60 is sweet an 8rt would look sweet on that corn planter
It is a nice planter. The RTs aren't our style, but it would probably look great!
Ten acres will keep a family for a life time.
You cross that much land in a minute.
A minute is a little bit of an overestimation. Farming is not the same thing that it was a century ago. Many of these individual fields all provided for one family. Often, there is remains of an old house or farm in certain fields. There are much less than there were years ago!
First time viewing your channel. You do a real good job explaining the planting process. Very educational. My question is do closing and opening disc on a planter wear out quicker in cover crop or no tilled ground compared to tilled ground? Looking forward to watching more videos.
I use to live in shelbyville moved to Missouri my brother was born in mattoon
We farm on both sides of Shelbyville! Nice to have you here!
I get the feeling that the transfer of decision making on your farm is challenging at times. Sometimes it's easy for the younger generations to fail to recognize what the older generations have had to do to survive and hopefully be able to pass on a viable farming operation. The younger generations will have their challenges too as time goes on but what those that lived through the 1970's and 1980's did is probably more than most today would. If I were to be asked what words of wisdom I would pass on it would be no doubt similar to your dad's, at the end of the day, there must be money in the bank after paying the bills. The technology, new equipment, peer pressure from those who are not agriculturally affiliated, are fine, but agriculture rewards those who love it for what it is and are willing to pay the price. That's why there are only 1% of the population involved. The cost is too high.
I definitely agree that farmers of my age have been spoiled by supportive grain prices, yields, and fancy equipment. The generations before me have really paid the price for our current success, and I am really grateful for that. My dad, although willing to upgrade to newer equipment and add other upgrades, is tremendous at saving money and doing things to get by. People see the fleet of equipment and think that it was all purchased with one check, but it is decades worth of investment that has led to this point. Farming has been relatively simple for the past 15 years. I really think about anyone could've made money growing corn and soybeans, though there are some farms that are exceptional at the business of farming. Thanks for the comment!
You said that the 4520 is retired, do you still use it move the corn heads out of the shed ? As seen on video 28 - we ❤ the old John Deere tractors
Nope we don’t even do that anymore since the corn heads are stored on carts now!!
You Do have Ingestion coverage on your Combines, right? As that C Shank would make a mess of the Rotor and Shoes inside the combine...😊 7:47
“Please don’t run me over Marty yellow” 😂😂
I thought that was funny!
my family farms we have 800 of corn and beans done so not close to being done
Awesome! Hope you all get finished up without trouble!
Doesn’t have exact emerge on the bean planter but still plants at exact emerge speeds*
It wasn’t worth the money for a soybean planter…
You need to mark that drainage spot and come back to see the crop (difference). Sure it’ll be a small spot but still interesting
It is hard to make a fair comparison...I think it's just safe to say that it'll be better unless the disturbance in soil takes a year or two to settle out.
@@aTrippyFarmer I wasn’t even thinking comparison, more of a walk by, o look at that?
Today is May 2nd. Heard on news there was a multi car wreck with several deaths up on I-55 in central IL. Authorities said pile up was caused by dust from high winds and farmers working fields. Was that anywhere near you?
Also great video. Looking forward to planting, spraying and seeing crops emerge.
That was just south of Springfield, which is about 70ish miles to the west of us. It isn't really uncommon for the wind to pick up dust if it is dry, but these seems like an unlucky combination of the severity and the location. It is a really unfortunate deal!
All IT dept. fixes involve shutting the computer down and restarting!
It's almost like magic!
Great video Andy. Congrats on the start to planting. Quick question - what is the white box in the field? (timestamp 57:57)
Those are water well pump houses. A local water cooperative pulls water from that field for their service.
Trippy there was a big car wreck on a highway do to dust I think it said highway 55
Yeah that was about 75 miles to the west/northwest of us. It isn't uncommon for the soil to pickup a little bit if the wind is strong and the ground is dry...just usually doesn't happen next to an interstate!
That’s how things go on the first day of seeding with a new seeder That kind of stuff happens. Especially with new technology. Farming these days is high tech
It seems like everything has to settle in at its own pace, especially when there are a lot of sensors and other hardware!
that old 4520 tractor be a good roadside batwing tractor or the 7800 would be to i know people who still use them old tractors today
We mow with the 7800 and run a big auger in the fall. The 4520 is officially retired!
👍👍
Like the video but just have a quick question 1 when do you know when it the right time to plant
2 how long does it take before you can harvest.
The right time to plant is when the soil is dry and the weather is starting to warm up. For us, thst usually occurs in April. Length to harvest would depend on the maturity of crops planted. In our area, it’ll take about 5-6 months to harvest these crops.
Are you trying to pick a fight with an Iowa Boy !!! Best ground in the world WTF !!! LOL just kidding I'm not even a farmer, but I can appericate farming and I KNOW that IOWA has THE BEST SOIL !!! LOL Love your content, keep it up :)
They can both be the best ground in the world since they are very similar!!
A little behind on the videos 😂
Yep that’s just the nature of the beast!
Nice video my friend 💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A very creative idea 💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I look forward to seeing your designs. Congratulations on your journey forward
💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤💚❤
Andy, a "good" planter operator doesn't trust anyone to change any settings on his planter. Take that from someone that used to do it. lol
There's probably some truth to that!
You done planting?
Yes! Videos will catch back up!
What drone do you use?
if i win the lottery..i will buy a small farm..even at 73
its integreated into me..being raised on a cattle farm.....did a ton of cultivating corn with a 4 row cultivator..we had 320 acres of corn,, also oats, hay, soybeans...farming has changes so much since the 60s
tractors we had were ih806, ih560, ih450 , ih350,, and an farmal h...farmed with our neighbor, who had 280 acres....sort of a team thing , he helped us, and we helped him....together it was about 1000 acres
Is it true Illinois farmers are having trouble finding hands and operators? I'm seeing ads on the job sites for $65k/yr starting with little to no experience. Seems hard to believe but idk 🤷
On the 8370r, do you run water in the tires, front and rear?
Nope!
@aTrippyFarmer put some in them, its a pain but worth it with the anti freeze, we do it in South Alabama.
Are you doing any hiring looking for a farming job
Xamilsh
