- A proud and momentous day in Cunard history. We named our newest ship, Queen Anne, at a spectacular naming ceremony in our spiritual home of Liverpool.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at Liverpool Waterfront to witness the historic celebrations, which featured performances from iconic Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and more.
Liverpool was the birthplace of Cunard’s first transatlantic crossing, 184 years ago in May 1840, and was the company’s headquarters for 128 years. The love and affection the people of Liverpool still have for all things Cunard is clear - never more so than when a Cunard ship arrives on the Mersey.
The City of Liverpool was named as Queen Anne’s Godparent in recognition of the long-lasting bond with its spiritual home.
Five Liverpool icons were invited on stage to represent the city, including former Spice Girl and author Melanie C, broadcaster and community leader Ngunan Adamu, local restaurant entrepreneur Natalie Haywood, Liverpool music and cultural legend Jayne Casey, and British Olympian heptathlon athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
These distinguished women, who embody the heart and future of Liverpool, just as Queen Anne does for Cunard, were chosen because of their significant contributions to culture at a local, national or international level.
The iconic smashing of the Champagne bottle against the ship signified this historic moment and wished the vessel and its crew good fortune on its future voyages.
To top the bill, operatic superstar Andrea Bocelli ended the event with an unforgettable performance.
I love that Cunard don't launch ships every year like almost every cruise line these days. To wait over a decade makes the Queen Anne so much more special. Congratulations Cunard! :D
The difference is, Cunard is a luxury cruise line which means most of their ships will be very different. Other cruise lines are designed for fun, and their ships usually look similar. So they can produce them much quicker.
I had hoped that HRH The Princess Anne would have been chosen to have named Queen Anne.
Glad to share my birthday with Queen Anne's naming day, she does look truly stunning.
I wish that the presenter would not use the word "Guys" Where is the traditional address of Ladies and Gentlemen?
It's a shame that non of the Members of The Royal Family was part of this, it kind of feels hollow without one of them being part of the Ceremony!
Was there and will be on it in 6 weeks and next year when it returns to Liverpool. Cunard coming home.
Will enjoy our voyages on Queen Anne as we have done on the other 3Queens. Hope she has a long and wonderful life.
Why was the naming ceremony from this new Cunard Queen not customary by a member of the royal family?
Agree..and what were they thinking having Matt & Emma Willis presenting.
So classless!
Queen Elizabeth 2 named 2 Ships and i miss her
She named far more than two ships.
Love Her can't wait to join her
I cant believe that they stay longer then white star line
They merged and become the Cunard white star line. Eventually it was just renamed to Cunard
I watched from Sydney i did'nt see thre naming coming the City of Liverpool should be proud everyone has a ship to honour we will welcome Queen Anne in February 28th next year in Sydney where i will boatd her for a sector of her World Cruise.
See you Friday!
Amazing day! Will never forget it. Especially Andrea Bocelli’s performance ❤
You miss the while star line?
Thrilled that Katarina Johnson Thompson has been recognised for her achievements. Well done Cunard.
Now that there are 4 ships it's time to leave Qm2 on the transatlantic run and stop using her for cruises. Most TA are sold out and not enough crossings' Durning the summer season when it's the best time to cross
And what do you plan to do with _QM2_ between September and April? Floating casino off Hong Kong?
Why wasn’t Princess Anne naming her
The Royal family were not present as we are currently in the lead up to a general election, and public appearances are traditionally reduced at these times, as the royals are not aloud to show any bias. Therefore what better god parent can a ship have than the entire city of people, where the company was originally created, and within view of the beautiful Cunard building.
Momentous day, indeed! #Cunard #traditions
Thoroughly enjoyed the day yesterday, shame we couldn’t stay for fireworks and sail off, however looking forward to booked cruise on queen Ann
We thoroughly enjoyed the launch and trip we made on the QUEEN ANNE!
eighth cunard queen? are they counting Berenagira?
I just hope they don't go down the P&O route 🙀
they got rid of british crews years ago
They are ultimately the same. Same overall company, trying so hard to maintain the integrity of the brand... and failing.
The Carnival (sorry, Cunard) faithful will disagree, naturally.
They have their opinion, I have mine.
@@garethroberts3884we only ever go with Cunard,QV & QE simply because we don't like big ships,we're booked on QA over Christmas & New Year & I'm already having doubts 🙀
@@Smellynelly67 Would you consider going even smaller? Windstar, Silversea, etc?? We used to cruise the Cunard size of ships, but since downsizing have never looked back! Enjoy your next cruise, wherever you decide to be.
Thank you sir, I'd love to try silversea but as I don't fly,we always leave via Southampton which limits us,off to Zeebrugge on QM in September 🎉
It’s not a launch, nor a baptism. Excellent naming ceremony and I wish the Queen Anne ship well, and all who sail in her.
The word 'distinguished' was used a lot but as far as I can see it was heavily populated by z-list 'celebrities'. Glad I didn't travel up to Liverpool to go to the naming day, what a non-event! Andrea Bocelli was good but otherwise looks a pretty rubbish event. Looking forward to travelling on ship later this year.
Only ogs remember being onboard Britannia
Liverpool❤Cunard
wounder how many british crew she has
Why did we get told on the ferry commentary that Camilla was here
If she was Why did she not do the naming of Queen Anne

It was a shame no one from royalty did the naming
Iconic moment. Love the Cunard New Look. Can’t wait for our our first cruise on the Queen Anne next year 😊
I work for Cunard under His Royal Majesties direction. my classification is not public.
I would comment on something rude but cant
Awwww cry
What nonsense, no problem with officially naming the ship in Liverpool, but to have five nondescript people from Liverpool being associated with the ship is a joke. Have Cunard gone woke? Why on earth didn't Cunard invite Princess Anne to be the Godmother of the ship, she's the daughter of a Queen and of course Royal. If they can have the Duchess of Cornwall (now Queen Camilla) naming Queen Victoria , they should have had Princess Anne naming the ship and to have a portrait of her in the ship would have meant a lot to the people who will travel on the QA. Of course, Cunard's home is Southampton not Liverpool.
"Gone woke" only cowards and brexiteers use that phrase

Wokery backfired as a freak show appears on stage
I'm British and I've never heard of any of these deadbeat women. I don't get it ... Queen Anne went on her maiden voyage as I set sail on QM2 a month ago ... why did she do her maiden voyage BEFORE being named?
Such a pity it was made in Italy and not the UK.
Interiors without character that resemble a DFS furniture showroom...
Better than faux-Victorian schlock.
