- In June 2022 Sweden announced it would provide Robot-17 (RBS-17) coastal defence missiles to Ukraine. They've since been seen on a handful of occasions in theatre.

Just so you know, some of my pro-UA comments are being deleted or shadowbanned here. This is happening on many pro-UA channels, and not just to me. It's either YT themselves, or 👹 bots falsely reporting comments and then YT doesn't check if the report is accurate.
Just for everyone's knowledge, Robot is the Swedish designation for Guided Missiles.
RBS is short for Robot System.
Thanks
Thanks, I should have mentioned that I guess haha
@@TheArmourersBench Nah, no worries. It's just something that gets asked often.
I mean, it is a pretty damned weird thing to call missiles!
Even for us Swedes.
@@Oddball_E8 I suppose it makes some sense; a guided missile could be thought of as a kind of robotic system, reacting to stimuli from a sensor (the seeker head) using actuators to provide degrees of freedom (guidance fins or thrust vectoring vanes). It just has the unusual feature that when its instruction set is complete, it explodes.
@@yetanother9127 That is the thinking behind it, and it was adopted as a term in like the 50's, so it kind of makes sense.
But since then the popular meaning of the word (both in English and Swedish) has changed to largely mean something else.
But... the Swedish military are a stubborn bunch, so the name is still the norm.
Even though the average Swedish citizen raises an eyebrow the first time they hear about it.
As a Swede, there is no better indication that the document @3.55-60 is written by a Swede, then the phrase "sharp robots" :D Neither word is used for the meaning it is in Swedish, sharp = skarp, means something like "live" or "armed", a "sharp situation" in Swedish means something is "for real". And robot is the Swedish phrase for a guided missile, a very old usage of the word that means a thinking computer, pretty much.
Excellent it’s always good to get confirmation of the use of such weaponary I was never quite sure but thought maybe the RBS had been used . Great op-sec Ukraine have become totally formidable with a variety of weapons systems 🇺🇦🇬🇧✌️Victory ☮️
Seems like google translate fro. Swe to eng tbh
@@AttiliusRex I'm leaning towards human error in this case, Swedes generally pride themselves in their fluency in English, and then forget that a lot of idioms can't be directly translated. It's still fairly common to see these kinds of errors on government buildings etc., and it has been for decades, long before machine translation was available.
so it means "astute projectile " ? yes we use sharp to mean that ,but in this context its not clear.
I would say that "Sharp robots" in this particular case means "live robots". With other words, no dummy robots where used during training. Another example would be the word: "Skarp ammunition" in Swedish would directly translate to "Sharp ammunition" but it means "live ammunition". So it sounds "correct" and make sense in a Swedes mind :D
I remember running 3km carrying the robot case with a robot in full combat gear during the green beret test in Amfibiekåren! Due to some early mistakes for my group, our case was also filled with extra rocks to increase the weight. I remember there was a time cap of 20 minutes or something like that… good fun memories and the scar in my hand from falling there is a constant reminder. 😂
Amazing. Did you pass? The Swedish govts press release did mention the Ukrainians were surprised by how hard work it was moving cross country. Don't doubt it.
@@TheArmourersBench yup passed! 5 days and 4 nights with minimum sleep and walking a total of 110km with 50kg gear. First (and last) time I’ve ever fallen asleep while standing up. Woke up by hitting the ground 😂
Hellfire missile is mostly an anti-tank or bunker missile, the Swedish modification is to make it able to hit ships, but that doesn't remove the original function.
A decently long range and also man portable missile still makes it useful for Ukraine.
Are the diffrences just in software that you can swap out or are there physical changes to the designs that would require adapted launchers/rails to use the ground ones on aircraft and the aircraft ones on the ground?
@@josephmontanaro2350 the main differences is in the warhead, the guidance system and launcher electronics is the same.
This was my line of work in the Swedish Amfibiekåren, am very pleased these missiles and systems are put to work!

Swedish ship2sub conversion kit. Follow simple steps. Applied with a push of a button. Allen Key included.
I'm going to assume it has been mounted on the back of a truck or MT-LB or something by now. Like surely it is too good of temptation for any mech shop in the area.
That’s a 10 minute job so ofc some guy named Ihor(forced change from Igor in democratic Ukraine) has done it😂
As happy as I am that we provided these robot things, it's not enough. Ukraine needs Gripens. I really hope that we are already training Ukrainian pilots on Gripens in secret, so that they are ready when the decision to send Gripens come. Defense minister Pål Johnson has said that we won't supply Gripens until we are in NATO. Very frustrating. 😞
Nothing secret about it. Though the official language is "familiarization"
Nicely done support by sweden, trained in secret, number of missiles undisclosed, seems like they have been providing some valuable aid behind the scenes.
Almost like Sweden had to keep secrets from the USSR for 70 years. 😁 Many, Swedes included, tend to forget that Sweden was a prime target of spying by both USSR and the US during the Cold War, and that commitment to OpSec sticks around. The biggest risks have always been the politicians, but gratifyingly them too seems to have grasped the need for ambiguity.
Sorry for bad spelling, Swedish keyboard and autocorrect.
Was involved for a short period of time with these in 1985 within the Swedish Marines ( KA ).
I wonder if the laser targeting system could be mounted on a drone

YO DAWG, where MSBS video?
Early 2024!
Excellent and informative reporting in support of the AFU
Would you be able to put these on an aircraft or put aircraft ones on the ground launchers? I assume theres at least a software diffrence you could replace but are there physical distinctions that prevent either model for cross system use without significant modifications?
The difference is that the RB17 has an APHEFRAG warhead for anti-ship use instead of the HEAT warhead of the original air-to-ground Hellfire.
I'm pretty sure the missiles themselves are interchangeable between launch platforms.
The true Robot Wars have begun (one of my favourite tv shows of the 90's)
Can these be adapted to fire Brimstone missiles?
No idea, but they should be able to fire original Hellfire AT missiles just as well as the modified Rb17 anti ship version the launcher was designed for
These things keep the Russians ships off the shores and gives Ukraine the ability to export its grains. RBS 15 could come with the F-16’s. That would help finish off the Russian black-sea fleet. And they can use the Stormshadows to take out the bridge again.
Still there is no MSBS Grot vid.... :(

Hellfire
Aren't these basically the same missile the Apache Helicopters use. The Hellfire. Can take out more than just ships. Can take out Tanks, buildings and so on.
The RB17 carries a modified warhead with a HEFRAG charge and smaller HEAT element while the OG hellfire is only HEAT for tank hunting.
I cant imagine that snow is good for the box of buttons...
Box of buttons is designed to survive beeing dropped in water up to 20m deep, EMP exposure and getting dropped from 15m height onto concrete.
Box of button cares not for snow or other weather.
We should mod sidewinders to be fired surface to surface for anti tank purposes.
Why?
That is possibly the dumbest thing ever. Maybe you don’t understand how fidgety missiles can be.
@@Austin-cx2xeor that a blast frag warhead will do nothing substantial to a tank…
The US experimented with a laser guided air to ground variant of the Sidewinder.
@@emmerad still has a fragmentation warhead. Its a spendy missile capable of 25 g turns to kill some troops in the open…
Huh. A missile really is a thinking robot who only does one job in its short life.

So these missles was targeted by the signal from frontline laser point?

Those Ukrainian soldiers are speaking russian language while fighting Russia. And there are claims about oppression of russian speaking population still.
Just a. Reminder that Russia bombed the majority Russian speaking city of Mariupol to the ground killing untold numbers of Russian speaking civilians.

Isn't the RBS-17 a version of the hellfire missiles? So makes sense to also use them for ground targets.Maybe not for (heavy) armored targets due to the HE-Warhead? But for buildings for example

Welcome to NATO Sweden!!🇸🇪
Im curious what happened to all the ground launched, Harpoon missiles NATO sent. Get used on ground targets or sitting in a warehouse? 🤠
You do realize russias black sea fleet has been decimated at the very least, right?
How many were sent?
They act as deterent against an ampibious landing towards Odessa. And for 1.5 years have they succefully scared away russia from Odessa's shores. Indeed they have been so succesful that the nazi-russian navy is now too scared to even operate in the western and central black sea and now sits and hide in the eastern black sea and hoping they are out of range and safe from Ukrainian attacks. Russia seems to lose a naval against a country with no navy.

It truly baffles me that smaller countries like sweden exports (or donates) weapons to Ukraine. I truly don't believe that the Russians will give Sweden a hall pass to behave like this. I do not believe Russian that Russia will invade sweden but there is no question in my mind that the approach will be more asymmetric such as train/arm swedish Neo Nazis or why not the muslims.. There are many ways to create instability (specially in sweden). I don't believe my thoughts are particularly novel so my question is.. what do Sweden gain by said behavior... truly dumbfounding
Same could be said of any Western nation Russia sees as a threat. They have already tried in numerous countries. Sweden and other countries see it as worth the potential dangers to aid a country whose sovereignty has been illegally violated. An emboldened Russia might be a larger threat to the Baltic etc.
"Same could be said of any Western nation Russia sees as a threat" yes and no.. sweden is a neutral country and as such there are certain obligation that they have to adhere too (although they are quite promiscuous as they let the germans use their railways during the invasion of Norway and even helped germany when moving troops to attack the USSR). You truly think the common swede is cognizant of the potential consequences of going head to head with Russia ? " the last part.." illegally violated " is quite a biased political statement as the conflict started as a civil war between the DPR/LPR militia and the ukrainian army.. @@TheArmourersBench
