DREAM THEATER - James LaBrie & John Petrucci interview @Linea Rock 2019 by Barbara Caserta

- On December 4th 2018 we were honored to have as our very special guests on LINEA ROCK (in our Milano-studios of Radio Lombardia) Mr JAMES LaBRIE & Mr JOHN PETRUCCI, frontman and guitarist of DREAM THEATER. The pleasant videointerview of BARBARA CASERTA (unleashed only 2 months later, to follow the label’s specific promo-guidelines) was mainly based on “DISTANCE OVER TIME” (out February 22nd 2019), 14th album of their long, magic musical journey of 33 years and first record on InsideOutMusic / Sony Music, a new label carefully chosen… We go deepen on the making of the album, done in a special secret place (Monticello, New York, close to Woodstock) and literally made in seclusion, whole in the family, including the meals they were cooking by themselves in between recording songs… John produced the record in a sort of “trialism” dividing himselves in different roles (songwriter, guitarist, producer), all demanding, with Ben Grosse helping on the mix and Tom Baker for mastering (a big name for his collaborations with the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Santana). The cover artwork of “Distance Over Time” was created by long-time cover collaborator Hugh Syme (Rush, Iron Maiden, Stone Sour) and it brings some Shakespeare’s reference "TO BE OR NOT TO BE"… how did they come to it? And what about the New York Times’ similar cover incident? Discover also all the anticipations we could get about the upcoming tour, which among old classics and new songs will also feature "Metropolis pt. 2 Scenes From A Memory" album played in its entirety celebrating its 20th Anniversary… and since John and Mike Portnoy remained good friends after the split, will there ever be any possibility of seeing a DT double drumkit performance with “Mike & Mike” banging together on same stage with the band? Just push play and find that out… Enjoy & Share!

James's face when Mike Portnoy was mentioned was an absolute picture! 😂
Yeap. "No. No. Not again. When will they stop mentioning him. When will this nightmare end. When I will stop being afraid of my tenure in the band."
Yeah very telling, there is no way they are letting him back at least not on James' watch.
@@PhilipAlexanderHassialis can you really blame him at this point. It's been 8 years, 4 albums, I've never heard any other band asked about that, that far removed from their departure
Well, that's why I made it as the last question! :-) By the way, the story of the April Fool is absolutely true! And it was my "original" way to put up Portnoy's name without being annoying, not making the usual boring questions ... Let's say I touched a very hot topic with protective gloves... ah! But it's true... I noticed James' reaction right away myself as well, I was sitting right in front of him and and he just scowled at me ... Saying "for James' joy" was intended as a "musical" joke: I meant that with two drummers like that, on the same stage together, it would be SO LOUD that it would also give any singer a harder time... but while I was saying it, after the look on James' face, I realized that I was messing up anyways, even after putting the question the "safe" way... damn... but James was super nice with me anyways also after the interview... he understood I acted in good faith and that it was just a witty way to finish the interview! ;-) With his answer Mr Petrucci confirms himself as a very smart guy, calm, reflective, and he is always super cool too! I love his beard and his deep sparkling eyes! \m/
@@BarbaraCaserta It was a brilliant interview! I thoroughly enjoyed it and the fact they weren't standard and generic questions being asked was refreshing. They are incredibly warm and humble guys and the environment that they put themselves in to regroup and bond for Distance Over Time has been a world of good. It's a brilliant album! Grazie 🇮🇹
I fucking love LabRie, he's just SO beautiful and elegant and cute :D
My dad grew up and was buddies with James in the Toronto area in the early 80’s, and both of them were infatuated with music, my dad a guitarist and james with his amazing voice (and drums). Both of them joined bands that ended without much success, (my dad was in a lot of van halen cover bands as well) but eventually my dad gave up on the dream, became a math teacher, while James moved on to DT. They still see each other from time to time, sometimes he visits them backstage, and I actually visited James’ house with him back in 2008/9. I was only around 7/8 though so i had no idea of the legacy or legend of DT like i do now. Ah regrets...
Holy crap...
Plot twist:
John Myung is at the side.
Your comment made my day
he's been talking the whole interview
this is a clinic for how a good interview should be done! great questions and James and John were very engaged in giving thoughtful answers! Very much looking forward to hearing this new album.
Thanks so much for your comment! Very much appreciated!
JP knows how to answer an awkward question diplomatically.
David Klecker so true!
Omg! Yes!
Years of training
great questions from what sounds like a well prepared interviewer
Except that very last question.
Thank you soooo much!
@@BarbaraCaserta Yes, it was a great interview until the very last question. It made us all uncomfortable and John tried to joke it away. The cringe was real.
@@Blomm11 It wasn't my intention to make this "uncomfortable"... as I already mentioned here replying to other comments, the story of the April Fool is absolutely true! Barbara Caserta Good answer! It was in good faith and the rest of the interview was one of the best I’ve ever heard with DT. Great job!
She is one of the best interviewers I've ever heard!
My lifetime favorite band.
Anthony Patty but you have a Stryper profile pic?
@@edwardspiezio9793 I love Stryper as well.
The older James gets, the more he looks like my step mom.
I must comment the interviewer, great job!
Thanks soooo much!!
Hell yeah
Great interview. Some new lines of questioning I've not heard a band asked before. It's a nice conversation.
Thanks so much!!!
Maddi is the official 6th member of the band. Essential to the operation
Take note radio stations across America... this is how to conduct an interview! Well thought out questions and letting the artists speak.
John Petrucci is such a nice guy!
what a great interview! congrats!
Thank you for interview. Question about '1st April fool' was awesome :)
Really good interview, loved the questions and both John and James were very forth-coming with a lot of info.
Thanks you so much! It was a very pleasant chat indeed! They are not only great artists but great human beings!
It was a really nice, insightful interview. Glad I watched it regardless of expectations!
Great interview with Dream Theater, looking forward to the new album!
Ciao! You did a fantastico interview with Dream Theater here! You asked them so many good questions that myself as a song writer loved to hear their answers to. Especially about the songwriting process. Grazie and Buongiorno!
😂
Thanks so much! Really appreciated you enjoyed and took time to comment!
Absolute legends. Great questions and great answers.
My hype is just too unreal. I haven't felt this way since A Dramatic Turn of Events, which did not disappoint me.
Jason Watt You're a loser and a virgin. Oh, and Dream Theater blows.
Looking forward for more interviews Dream Theater
one of the best DT interviews out there
Grandissima Barbara!!!! gran bel lavoro e averne di giornalisti come te in giro per il Bel Paese!!!! e che pronuncia in americano!!!! ;) oh yeah
So, both Mikes (Portnoy and Mangini), then Petrucci and Satriani on guitar...Rudess and Sherinian on keys....Myung and Levin on Bass...wrap it up with LaBrie and Lizzie Hale singing....Yeah, that'd be a show worth watching. Get on it guys!! RAAAAWWWWKKKK
how about Labrie and Townsend..?
And Russell Allen!
Basically Labrie and Dominici - because someone has to sing the Images and Words properly :) (their fault for inviting him on their anniversary :P )
Oh...my...GAWD!!!!
I dont see the problem with more drummers or guitars, king crimson started with 1 now they have 4 drummers
You always have great interviews!
Thanks so much!
Great interview, there's a lot of aspects that never been asked and discussed before
Really, really good interview! I enjoyed a lot! And thank you for ask them about the tour, festivals, and if they will play the entire Metropolis pt2 in Europe! Good job!
Thank you so very much!!

Yes, Indeed, one of the best band interviewer I've seen in whole life. Congrats.

Great interview! Intense questions and very interesting answers. Brava, proprio brava😊
Grazieeeee! :-)
Buena entrevista con una genial pregunta al final...los tres estuvieron brillantes....Petrucci es un crack!👏👏👏
Marcelo Sanchez Que es un 'crack?'
Finally an interview with great questions asked. Grants.
Thank you so very much!!
James had a very happy demeanor until the very end when Portnoy was mentioned.
LaBrie seemed SUPER uncomfortable with the Portnoy part at the end.
Super tired and jetlagged.
I sometimes wonder about LaBrie...
@@foxedrey622 What do you wonder?
@@foxedrey622 he is ok....he just has a very strange personality. He is very laid back and down to earth but a little blunted in affect at times.

Great interview with intetersting questions.
Thanks so much!
Great Interview, even i don't listen their stuff anymore. I love the last question, beautiful to see how it made LaBrie quite uncomfortable during the end, clearly visible D)
''...where we could sit around and dye each others hair and beards...it was swaaasum!!"
They seem like nice guys.
image30p
They all seem like just a bunch of humble Dads, that happen to get to do their dream job.
They definitely are! And very humble too, it was such a pleasant chat!
muy buena entrevista
I love DT and I love this guys, so humble and funny.
Maddi is THE MAN! He should be featured on the promo images with the rest of the DT guys.
Great production on the New album
Major thumbs up to the interviewer! She was fantastic! She asked very intelligent and pertinent questions! Great job!
Thank you so much!!
You're very welcome! I thoroughly enjoyed that interview!
Great interview.
Thank you Dude!
@@BarbaraCaserta youre welcome. You have a great style and thoughtful of interviewing im my opinion. Will be checking out more for sure
Such a beautiful and insightful interview, totally loved the kind of questions you asked James and John ☺️. About the artwork one thing I always wondered what's the significance of number 137 engraved on the skull. Guess we'll find that out soon enough 🤘. Thanks for uploading this magnificent interview 👌. #DistanceOverTime #DT14 🤘🤘
Thanks so very much!
@@BarbaraCaserta: You're welcome. Keep up the good work! ☺️
Number 137 is very significant in Physics. Please Google that.
James's stiffness when she named Mike Portnoy LMAO
You caught that too? He was not laughing at all but was sure to be more amused by John shaving his beard.
timestamp?
29:30
yeah, i got it
They did not get along.
Write all the music in 18 days??! Wow.... These guys are music machines.
By the way, this is one of the best interviews I've heard in a long time about the process of making the record.
Marshall Ross, yes, it’s crazy to me that they can come up with those complex passages in such short amounts of time. JP and the Liquid Tension Experiment guys wrote and record those albums in a couple of weeks, which blows my mind.
@@samwestonpotter Yea, I guess at their level you are only limited by your imagination, not by any lack of skill. They just think it and make it so...LOL
Man 🤣🤣🤣 Petrucci avoided the whole Portnoy question at 29:24 very well. Glad to see they are still friends. I am hoping for LTE reunion.
Bellissima intervista, complimenti: domande molto interessanti; si vede che sono state ben pensate e proposte da una persona competente. Brava!
Grazie Paolo! Fa piacere leggere questi commenti, io ce la metto tutta, la musica è tutta la mia vita! Continua a seguirci!
Little house on the Prairie - great Michael London reference lol.
Esperando fechas para cusndo venga a peru estoy anviosos por su vonvierto
grande johnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
He is very good analysist this Mr rock and roll, we share passion for Mellissa Bonn
Questa intervista è anni luce più avanti rispetto alle interviste fatte da americani
WoW! Grazie di cuore!
It will be adventurous
Lots of respect for these guys. Wish Portnoy could have still been a part of it, but there is probably a lot of stuff we don't know about.
Mike K Mangini is great!! Of course, when we lose an original member band, we’”ll always feel nostalgic about it! But, I love learned how to love mangini originality and extreme tecnique.
@@israeltenoriooficial yeah I know and I like him a lot. Just saying the first wife is the first wife!
Just hope the compression is way down on the new album. Hoping and praying for an average DNR value of 13.
Ben Grosse has worked with Disturbed in the past so I am a bit worried about the mix being too jacked forward. Will see. I'll be buying the album to show my support. Deluxe edition actually.:)
wow, living in a house with your best mates and being able to walk into the onsite studio and just play instruments...sound awesome
Hai james... Hai john... please conser in indonesia again 🤘.
PLEASE COME TO PERUUU!!
God bless Dream Theater
Big part of universe
I'm afraid John is beginning to look like a cult leader...Guru Petrucci
Like metal santa?
He looks like Orthodox Jesus
Like a song....killing in the nameeeeeee of god
He is.
LOL! made my day XD
King Crimson did a three dummer show and it was amazing. It's possible!
I knew that!! They are Gods. They make amazing music...and they can cook. 😉🍀
👏👏👏🤜🤛
while in Italy, John should meet up with the other famous Petrucci, Danilo Petrucci from MotoGP
They're cousins 😂
Dream Theater needs definitely more magic
When John doesn’t talk he don’t got any lips lol.
drummerjon30 the beard consumes him in his silance
Quentin Ford damn, that was poetic
Enjoy
30:21 "That's hysterical 🙃"
Isn't this the same studio where RUSH did Snakes & Arrows?
What a godly beard
"What made you decide to change record labels"? Better vibe?, better management?, better sentiment?, better future?, better understanding? Yeah, Yeah, I'm sure! THE MONEY!!!!!????
There is story inside
Holy shit! Velocity = Dream/Theater!!! Mind = Blown 😱😛
Dream Theater has opera star, her name is Mollisa Bonny
27:10 “puoi fare un’ultima domanda” 😂
I think that big Show doing extra Festival doing in Love Jimi the Rat
I'd like to know whether at Firenze rocks they're going to play Scenes from a memory in its entirety.
Don't think so... they have an afternoon slot, they won't have the time...
Hell is important part of universe
Based on what I've heard of the album so far, DT should record ALL of their future albums at that location. Sonically this might be the best sounding album they've done. Certainly since Six Degrees.
an idea for the double lineup
john petrucci and jason richardson
james labrie and charlie dominici
mike and mike
jordan rudess and kevin moore
john myung and billy sheehaan
metal remains backstage
Bella intervista, finalmente Mike Portnoy è tornato nella band. 🤘
The interview was going so well and then the ship sank with the failed attempt to uncover new Portnoy drama.
matty205224 about to watch it right now...😜
4:39-I find it so strange/funny how JP the badass guitar god I've worshipped for decades, his delicate sound when he says "oops," maybe it even pisses me off a little bit.
are they going to celebrate when dream and day unite 30th anniversary too? i love this album but it seems like no one cares about it :'(
Mellissa Bonny of course
