This pair of KPL5's, finished in May, were made to test the differences between the two most common archtop bracing systems: X and parallel.

Which bracing do you think each guitar has? (Answer at the bottom of the description!)
Ha, very intersting, I could swear the first one was the X braced! It sound so much warmer and round, while the second sounded like it had more projection. Thanks for sharing!
CURIOUSLY the result is the opposite from what we can expect with a priori . The first is parallel-braced but doesn't project more than the
second which is X- braced .....and adds more precision ( definition ) on single notes . However I think the" comparision" is not effective and
lacks of method . You have to compare playing the same song , the same strumming , chords , arpeggios and single lines .
But the idea to offer a real comparision between the two main different bracing on similar archtop guitars is very interesting .
got it instantly, when the 2nd guitar started to play!!! Both are excellent. My heart is with the X.
Thank you for this perfect comparison. Very insightful. I've been looking for a comparison like this for a long time.
Wonderful version of "Taking A Chance n Love". I like both guitarrs....no winner here....just different sounds.
100% 🤝
i liked the x-braced top better. the general rule is parallel braces give you more treble and x-braces give you more bass. i'd like to see a comparison with a single diagonal brace like the old Strombergs. they're said to be very loud compared to old D'angelicos.
I had heard the opposite said and thought I wanted parallel bracing so I'm glad this video was made. Which is why I thought #2 (which I liked quite a bit more) was parallel. Also glad for you explanation comment to reinforce what I heard. I will probably get a Yunzhi b/c they are cheap and seem to sound pretty good so long as you do any electrical stuff AFTER you get it. Now to try to figure out which size has the most bass thump and hopefully volume as well. I welcome any thoughts or experience on this question. Tempted by the 18". I know the 16" does have great percussion but it seems like a snare drum with bass and treble kind of grinding together so you kind of don't hear the after strum thump. 🤷♂️
Smoke gets in your eyes! My daughter used to fall asleep to Coleman Hawkins version when she was a toddler! My favourite! Pulling at my heart stringd
I had guessed them backwards. Go figure~ Thanks for the taste test! Nice playing, BTW!
Personally, I like the x bracing, seems to have a tighter frequency response. But, the parallel bracing has an interesting quality as well. Has that boxy ragtime 30s feel.
I love #2: more focused mids.
Definitely a more compressed midrange. I’m not sure either one really sings in a magical-sounding way, nor has a truly positive attack to the note, but maybe it’s the recording. The first one sounds better to me overall, but the context in which they’re played probably decides which sound works better of these two.
Amazing! They're both on my "wanna buy list" now. :) I actually thought no1 was X-braced btw.
i have those mics! a pair of SE 2200's bought them 18 years ago
Go getem Barny Kessel ! You got chops my friend.
Nice playing! Are these made with exactly the same mic position, gain settings and post-processing? The difference in sound between the 2 guitars is bit like the difference I get on my jumbo when I go from light to extra-light (Thomastik AC111) strings and normalise the gain in both recordings independently.
I prefer, ..I prefer, .. erm, I prefer both of them.
prefer #2 forward braced, do i win one as i'm the only one who knew correctly? considering i have the mics too?
Isaac, listening to this again I realise the x-braced one sounds a bit as if it has a thinner top. Is that correct?
I always thought parallel braces were superior, but I prefer n#2.
#2
The second, x braced, sound warmer than the first which sound more oldies trebles to me.
How to have warm basses and crispy trebles ?
But are they still guitars ?
Art object
Magnifique
"Surprised?" YES!
Such handsome guitars. They sound great, they're utterly beautiful. I wish I could afford one. Never mind eh, I'll just keep dreaming.
My guitar arched on it's own
That's not good!
Wow, super 👉👉💯💯👍👍
I like #2. Was that X brace or parallel?
X-braced!
👏👏😘
prefer #1. Sounds less tense.
Make a jaguar please😭🙏🙏
#1 :)
I prefer the sound of the first guitar
Preferred the 1: less mid range
belle guitare bon joueur mais musique minable
....MAIS surtout plus que minable le commentaire du jeannin sur lequel la musique ne s'est jamais penchée .
