What could cause this problem?
Probably diff fluid leaked out and it was ran dry.
At that point you probably should have bought a used one, rebuild if needed and install. There are tons of these cars sitting in junk yards from where you could pull it. Cause that diff is toast and ideally needed to be disposed.
