    Hypothesis: The Hatchling's species is way more resistent to pain than humans, which is why the protagonist is able to go through so much physical torment over and over again without going crazy.

      Their hunter/gather life style of trial and error is probably why they would be so resilient.
      The ability to be able to stomach “the good stuff” is the mark of a true hardy hearthian. With the ability to die and come back to life over and over, fatal stunts become trial and error. No creature is better suited for immortality.

      There's a lot to indicate that the Hearthian culture revolves around a casual disregard for death. Gabbros casual acceptance of dying repeatedly is a good example. There's also the miner under the village who got laughed at for saying "safety first." And finally, there's the guy inspecting the Dark Bramble seed who decides that he and the boys are just gonna hack at the mysterious, possibly planet destroying plant with some hatches.
      There are some Hearthians who seem to care about their lives but I think they're the exception tbh

    The amount of physical torment the Hatchling goes through during outer wilds is something I never really considered, but the emotional weight of burning up it's own body in order to reach the truth speaks volumes to the importance of overcoming fear in pursuit of learning.

    I always thought it's the most disturbing thing in the dlc. The fact that the hatchling has to burn himself alive to finally free the prisoner, and the fact that we can't hear the alarm bells on the bridge with one lock, they both give me chills every time i see them or think about them. The devs did a great job in making the player uncomfortable.

  • @DoctorTex
    @DoctorTex Рік тому +56

    Y'know, sometimes I feel the Hatchling gets desensitized to pain and death after a few rounds of the ATP. On top of that, most of their deaths are from outside forces: Supernova, running out of oxygen, crushing, being eaten, and being unable to defy gravity.
    Here, however, they hesitate. This is perhaps the first time they have to WILLINGLY kill themselves in order to solve the mysteries plaguing their mind. And it's through a fire, the one place they consider a safe haven.
    THIS GAME, MAN!

    • @quantumblur_3145

      @@quantumblur_3145 I meant in mind, of course. While they don't have a scratch on them when they wake up, they still remember the pain of their last death and all those before. Eventually, it all becomes numb to them because, well, it's inevitable. Even though they're in a time loop, there's something different between accidentally falling into the sun, and willingly catch yourself on fire to stay in the Dreamworld after death.

    I love this because even without words, the hatchling pacing around the fire conveys so much emotion. They know what they have to do, death WILL keep them in the simulation, they will get the answers they want, but the entire time, they are just stuck thinking, "is their another way?" Is their a less painful, less agonizing death they can endure? Is DEATH really the only way? And that one thought that wont leave the back of their mind. "What if this is the last loop?" What if the Ash Twin Project dosent effect consciousness trapped in the simulation? Worst of all, what if it dosent work? Its insane to think about that in a first person perspective, I honestly dont know if I would even be able to take the step into the fire, never the less, stay in there until it kills me.

    The worst part? While burning yourself to death is one of the three required glitches to unlock the vault, another is to jump off the raft while switching areas... and you can't get to the raft from the flame next to the vault.
    Now imagine their rage when realizing this.

    • @minerman60101
      @minerman60101 Рік тому +10

      I figured that I would need to die while in the simulation, so I repeatedly jumped off of a platform in Hidden Village until my vitals were critical, thinking I needed to and could die while inside of the simulation. My guess was that the process of being in there took some sort of health toll on you, and that's how you could be dead in the real world but alive in the simulation. I did the raft jump, blew out that seal, then took the little raft back to the prison so I could see whether the bell would wake me up... and it did. In a bit of a last ditch effort, I jetpacked right into the bells to see if there was any chance of dislodging them, and lo and behold in my flailing I didn't maintain flight fully enough, and died the moment I grazed the fire with my feet. Then I woke up. It was absolutely amazing to have finally figured out this third bug after two days of trying and even dreaming about being in the simulation working out what chicanery I could pull. I quickly make my way onto the hidden invisible platform, into the elevator, down to the raft, jump off during the loading screen, make my way to the middle lock island, and...
      Its raft is on the other side. The end of the expansion, right in front of me. I have all the knowledge I need to break open that prison. All except the one piece of knowledge that should've been drilled into me ages ago by New Londo Ruins: always return the elevator back up, or in this case raft. The time loop gaslit me into thinking the world shall always reset to my whim. For my foibles, my little Hearthian is dead, staring at a raft that should've carried them to their new friend, robbed of the confirmation that they can evade the red eye watchers, and their entire world being reduced to a stupid little island. Not even the first forbidden archive is accessible to them, thanks to the ledge separating the island from the out of bounds water.

    When titaniumlegman met the first owl, he got scared and careless enough to unintentionally walk into the flame, this undeath confused him enough to drop the lantern and run away from it, this confused him a lot more: He is the only lets player who did a double-sequence-break within 4 minutes after the first ever jump-scare, before reaching any archive. the 20 minutes after that where full of confusion, wild speculation, and analytic trial and error. titaniumlegman is a very smart and analytic player. His first exploration ever went straight into dark brambles (before even landing on the moon), and he noped right out of it, fleeing back outside before finding anything inside.
    When day9tv first landed on the probe launcher, he repaired the damaged spaceship in low orbit around the gas giant. his first (crash) landing on the gas giant (far away from the landing site of his spaceship, as he crashed durting EVA-reparis) panicked day9tv soo much, be stopped playing OuterWilds while recording/streaming it forever, after having played only 50 minutes, barely having explored anything. He continued playing off stream.

    What is probably my favourite thing about this is it can work two ways.
    The Hatchling understood the problem of the codes being inaccessible and the only other way past the bell being... well.
    But that does not mean they immediately jumped to that conclusion.
    Only one lock, five slots, each with 8 options, the same options for each slot but repetition is a possibility;
    that means a variation of five elements for a set of 8 elements, the possibilities are 8^5=32.768
    and all the time in the world.
    How many did the Hatchling go through before the found the resolve to take the step?
    Or alternatively how often did the Hatchling perform the same action with no success in sight over and over, a cruel reminder of how endless time still wouldn't amount to any real change, until they lost their resolve to avoid that method?
    Was the animatic from just one sitting or did the Hatchling come by the vault multiple times over the course of their hours of brute-forcing?
    It's not known and it doesn't matter. What matters is it's a possibility because the animatic was made so universal.
    And I love that.

    I have a little theory:
    Intentionally burning yourself to death already seems like a bad enough way to go for us; now consider the fact that Hearthians aren't too far off from their aquatic ancestors, meaning they could likely be some sort of amphibians, like frogs or salamanders. So they not only have to contest with the pain of being burned alive, but there's also the irritation that must come with the moisture of their skin pretty much being dried up on the spot-

    • @lucastep310
      @lucastep310 5 місяців тому

      The Nomai described their ancestors as “very hardy.” That coupled with the idea of ghost matter being above the water for who knows how long, resulting in some… inconveniences when they tried to return above the water. I wouldn’t be surprised if either damage numbs quicker for them or they are more tolerant to pain.

    During the game, I kept thinking about how hurt the Hatchling keeps getting. I am so happy to see pieces of art this this where we recognise that. That's a fantastic job you did right there! The expressions are on point! My poor little heart! ;A;

    AMA-ZEING ! That show how much it is simple for us, players to do it. BUT, it show how difficult and risky and the amount of guts it takes to do it itself. You showed us his feeling without word, you showed us his pain without scream, and I felt it all along my chin !
    GREAT GREAT JOB !

    This is awesome
    Idk if its a thing you went for, but the hatchings eyes look ”old”, as if they have been on an adventure too long for any mortal. Looks cool

    Lets be honest the real answer to the bell problem is not to set yourself on fire and burn to death. Their is way more reasonable options in that scenario.
    1. Use timber hearths famous sap wine to get so drunk that the bell can't wake you. (Or any other idea is this mind set)
    2. The hatchling uses earplugs or damages their eardrum.
    3. the hatchling could off themselves in a way that would be way less painful. Knife, explosion, etc
    4. By far the most reasonable solution. Find a way to break or disable the bell in the real world before going into the dream. Muffle bell or jam something to were the hammers can't hit the bell
    The only reason the fire is the answer is because its a game and options are limited. The hatchling would have to have no pain receptors, be insane or stupid to chose death by fire.
    sorry for the rant. Good video.

      At last, it was possible to pick a password by brute force, using a time loop. 8^5=32768. At least a hundred options per cycle could be sorted out. 328 cycles with a painless end (you are beyond the supernova explosion) or burn yourself alive? The answer is obvious. By the way, during the cycles when exploring the main game, it would also be reasonable to fly beyond the supernova explosion at the end of each cycle, just to avoid pain. I'm sure after 2-3 deaths this idea should become obvious.

      nah, not true. In the slides it's shown that it's brain wave pattern changes doing the waking up, not physical ears.

    incredible animation, emotional and all, but...
    he's at the wrong campfire
    he can't break all the locks from inside the vault like that
    which means that, even after all this consideration, fear and pain
    he will need to do it again, in the next loop

      I've seen people who unlock the other two, leave the Vault zone, then go to this one to try and figure out something, only then realizing what needs to be done. So while maybe not the most "efficient" way to do it, it can happen.

    Chilling and amazing! The sound effects really draw it all together! You do a great job showing the Hatchling's hesitation (which, rightfully so given what they have to do) and their determination to follow though to reach the Prisoner.

    You have reproduced a very difficult moment.. To achieve something you need.. to die.. It is extremely sad that this is the fate of the main character in the current situation and at the end of the game.. Well, this is also waiting for us someday...

    This is amazing! I recently found your channel through your fantastic Outer Wilds covers, so I was beyond excited to see that you also make gorgeous visual arts/animations. I love how you've drawn the hatchling and the range of expressions on their face as they go through an internal struggle before making their final decision. It really adds a lot of emotion to the scene.
