Thanks for all the good historical and present information. Very sorry to hear about the passing of Kerry Chater. RIP. A very good songwriter, who wrote the classic Union Gap song, "Wait Till The Sun Shines On You". Another favorite of mine that he co-wrote was "So Hard Living Without You", a beautiful minor hit from 1978 by Airwaves which reached #62. Highly recommended for soft rock lovers. I met Gary and talked with him several times. Very nice person.
I can give you a pass on not knowing the show was called Where the action is, not where the activity is. I'll also overlook the town of Union Gap Wa which was NOT named after the band but c'mon. Gary Puckett is NOT dead as you reported, he is alive and well and still tours. Your research needs to improve....a lot!!!
When the Monkees reunited in the 1980's, I went to their Pittsburgh show. Gary Pucket (minus the Union Gap Band) was one of the opening acts. He had a real powerful voice and sounded almost as good in concert as he did in studio recordings. (Couldn't say the same for the Monkees though....) In 2010, while doing a military tour as a US Army Reservist in UK, I went to an Oldies concert in UK. Among the acts advertised was the Union Gap Band. In truth, this was the Union Gap Band UK and it of course lacked Gary Puckett or any other original members of the band. Its only ties to the real Union Gap Band was the keyboardist who had joined the band just before its breakup. The lead singer was decent but no one could do those songs like Gary Puckett!
For the next episode I suggestion: The Alan Parsons Project and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap favorite song has to be "Lady Willpower" followed by "Young Girl" and "Over You"
Union Gap was not named after the band. Union Gap was a city long before Puckett. My Army friend was from that area and we both had a love for Pucketts singing. He went to the same high school as Puckett and we began our friendship because he heard me listening to Puckett. We had a 2 person fan club and were planning on continuing after the Army. Didn't happen, Doug was killed in Cambodia in March 71.
Jerry Fuller wrote what would become 4 gold records for the Union Gap and they decided they no longer wanted to work with him because they wanted to write their own material? I've been in this business for 55 years and if I've learned anything, it's never walk away from a winning formula. They could have worked on their own material on the side while continuing the partnership with Fuller. As it turned out, they never came close to having a hit after severing the relationship with Jerry Fuller. Bad Move!
Never had a number one? I know why. Just take a look at who was their competition and then you'll know why. From 1962 to 1970, pop rock was in it's heyday, this band more than held their own. Puckett had/has a wonderful voice.

Gary himself named the band Gary Puckett and Union Gap but, the record company added "The" to Union Gap. Another famous celebrity who grew up in Yakima was R. Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket and other movie fame. One of hos brothers used to be my boss for about 8 years in California where all three brothers moved to after being in the Marines.

6:32 "Puckett gave his first on June 20th, 2010 in Union Gap Washington which is named after his former band" I'm,pretty sure the town was named Union Gap WAY before Gary Puckett decided to use it.
The truth of the matter is that Puckett and the other band members started arguing over money in the mid 70s. On one occasion, Puckett and co founder Gary Withem came to fisticuffs after Withem alleged Puckett was "skimming" the band's travel expenses, which lead to the eventual breakup. Another band member told a San Diego radio station in the 80s that Puckett was "arrogant and selfish", and thought he was "better" than anyone else. Truth will probably never be known.
When they went to Mexico City in the early 70’s a crowded Arena was angry to listen them and when someone from the staff tried to explain to the public to keep calm and be quiet a bottle smash in their face……the Concert was canceled and for 5 years no more foreign bands were allowed to play in Mexico (for massive audiences) until the Osmond Brothers can do in 1975
