"The Japs Got Us Surrounded." - The Pacific (2010) #shorts #thepacific #movie #movieinsight #scene
The Pacific is a 2010 American war drama miniseries produced by HBO, Playtone, and DreamWorks that premiered in the United States on March 14, 2010.
The series is a companion piece to the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps's actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations within the wider Pacific War. Whereas Band of Brothers followed the men of Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment through the European Theater, The Pacific centers on the experiences of three Marines (Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge, and John Basilone) who were in different regiments (1st, 5th, and 7th, respectively) of the 1st Marine Division.

At daybreak, Basilone and his squad are in the chow line, where the dinner menu reads "Rice Without Beef, Rice Without Chicken, Rice Without Shrimp..." The mood is so tense that Morgan almost comes to blows with a man over a radio ad for Aunt Jemima pancake mix. Morgan gets in another man's face, saying the only radio that he wants to hear is a report that enemy ships have been sunk. But they'd need the Navy for that, Morgan snips, so fat chance. Morgan complains that the constant shelling by the Japanese has kept him awake and the jungle environment has given him diarrhea. Basilone pulls him off, suggesting they're all suffering those same problems and more and jokes that his friend will start complaining about the mosquitoes next. Basilone takes JP to the chow line, joking that a hot meal will cheer him up. Unfortunately, hot chow translates to rice with maggots in it. "Think of it as meat," the cook deadpans. The marines had it tough, but the navy lost 3 times as many men.
@@johndouglass3377 all because of MacArthur's ego...
Doolittle was right in not informing Mac Arthur of his plans to bomb Japan. The tensions finally boiled over in Korea where he got shaken awake that he wasn't a very keen commander.
@@johndouglass3377The marines can’t do their job without the Navy. The Navy can do their job just fine without the Marines. The Navy has better infantry than the marines in the form of the Seabees, the important jobs in the marines like chaplain and combat medic are done by Sailors, and all of the marines logistics are handled by the Navy.
The Navy was losing ship after ship trying to keep the Japanese off the island, keep their bombers out of the sky, and resupply the ground pounders only for them to sit on their ass and complain that we didn’t do our job fast enough for their liking.
What a bunch of ingrate idiots. Hell, the Army did more fighting than the marines did. Their reputation is entirely unearned.

More sailors died in the waters just off Guadalcanal (including the 5 Sullivan brothers) than Marines and Soldiers that died on Guadalcanal. Btw, the US Army had six full corps and 21 divisions fighting in the Pacific theatre to the 6 divisions in the Marine Corps.
Yeah but if we acknowledge that then how will soothe the bruised egos of modern E-1 infantrymen
My great uncle survived the war but he was among the sailors there. So I am sure he had friends and comrades among dead or wounded from the naval battle. In case anyone was wondering, he was on the U.S.S. Honolulu. His younger brother (my paternal grandfather) was also in the Pacific Operations but was Army. In his case he started his island hopping at New Guinea. Grandfather also survived the war.
There's so many examples of individual battles and wars won, as well as overall mission successes, that solely relied on multiple or all branches working together to their strengths. I understand your point of view cause it makes sense but there'll never come a day when the branches aren't absolutely busting each others balls and throwing blame😂
Well, I mean, duh there can be hundreds to even thousands of sailors on a ship a single target to be hit if it isn’t sunk, there are going to be plenty of casualties even if your job isn’t manning guns, and running ammo.
At least sailors are comfortable before they die.

Can't blame him, crapping 20 times a day under the sweltering heat would put me in a bad mood too.
Marines are always in a bad mood, they just need a reason to eith be angry or be funny.
My great grandpa's company was in the pacific. Marine Corps. He told my dad that Guadalcanal was the worst part of the war for him (take into account that he was at Saipan, Iwo Jima *and* Okinawa). He was thrown off a ship and stranded for three months. The Japanese and Americans ended up running out of decent food and ammunition. You had to eat at night because otherwise you would throw up from the maggots in your rice.
Maggots in rice probably meant "fermented rice" that's alcohol to some.

The USMC, tough as nails those guys
My grandpa Hector served in the US Army in the Philippines during WW2.
I heard a story where he went out during the night and collected mangoes for him and the guys to eat. He ended up getting a gnarly rash all over his chest because he stuffed the mangoes down his shirt to get as many as he could..
He came back to the states with jungle rot/trench foot and really bad asthma which was exacerbated by exposure from the war.
My grandfather was with the 24th Division in the Phillipines. He took a watch off of a dead Japanese soldier. Forgot about it until he got home, and decided to wear it. Got a horrible rash, like a caustic burn. Replaced the band and wore that watch for 25 years.

He’s still a rear echelon hump, and this is the old Marine Corps, not modern one!
The Guadalcanal campaign had many losses and victories in naval battles but the US Navy has always prevented huge Japanese reinforcements from landing.

People deal with things differently
Besides the eastern front with Russia and Germany I really do think the marines along with the Aussies got the worst part of WW2

Badass maggots to survive being boiled in rice. They must be new marines!
Maybe that's why the NCOs at basic were always calling them maggots
There’s always that one guy that cracks.
That “Fuck it” I felt that 💀
Why would there be live maggots in cooked rice 😆
How are you going to stop the flies in a "target rich" environment?
@SeraVictoria5 Since the Navy couldn't hold off the Imperial Fleet, they had to haul ass before unloading all supplies. The Marines only had 10 days of food, all if it pancake mix and canned peaches. The Japanese had left behind 7 days worth of rations. Rice and canned meat and vegetables. Vandegrift immediately ordered only 2 meals a day to stretch it out.
Maggots are very tough
@SeraVictoria5 I'm no scientist but it seems to me that the temperature required and length of time to cook rice would kill a maggot. 🤷
@SeraVictoria5no there werent. Its not possible for maggots to survive being fucking boiled. Dead maggots, sure but live maggots, no way on earth.

Wait an E5 telling an E6 what to do in that era is crazy 😂😂😂😅
They fought each other as well
The guys fighting in the pacific had it the worst in my own opinion. I believe everyone didn’t think they would make it very far. They just needed cannon fodder to keep Japan at bay.
Cannon fodder. That's an ironic way of putting it considering that the US Army lost more troops in Europe than did the US Army and Marine Corps put together in the Pacific.
@@redaug4212 Ok relax.
It was an ignorant statement sure, but let’s not forget that the bloodiest battle for the Americans in the entire war was Okinawa.
The pacific was hot, had mosquitos, was mostly jungle, and was very bloody. Definitely would’ve preferred to fight in Europe.
@@bignick2k215 What's the purpose of comparing what these men went through to begin with though? Is an ETO veteran's experience less valuable in some way because you believe the Pacific Theater had the "bloodiest battles" and PTO veterans had it "worse"?

Incredible what they had to eat. Incredible they sent them in without enough water. What was wrong with the military? Water isn't expensive, hard to get a hold of or transport.
The only harbor at Guadalcanal was accessed by a slot between two islands. It was too dangerous to resupply by day due to daily air raids and at night the Japanese would send long ranged torpedeos down the slot at any American ships.
And the fleet commander bailed before all the supplies were dropped. Skim the Wikipedia of the campaign, it's brutal stuff

I still don't understand why this bozo is so angry with aunt Jemima
He wasn't angry at aunt Jemima, he was angry at the list of things he rhymed off regarding their current situation, coupled with the fact that they were at war with the threat of death being a daily occurrence thousands of miles away from home. It's not uncommon for people to be full of pent up anger, to then explode at something that seems so trivial because all it took was that one little thing to push them over the edge. I get that this is just a show but he character is based off a real person so bozo is quite poor use of words given the context.
He doesn't want to hear frivolous filler on the radio, just the straight dope news about what has happened that may improve their situation. It all worked out in the end, though.

My grandpa was stationed in Japan immediately after WWII. He really hated/disdained the Japanese until much later in life. I think a turning point was when he saw some of us grandkids watching some Japanese art performance or something like that on TV. Lots of traditional clothes and beautiful furnishings and tea and so on. He was staring at it pretty dumbfounded. After awhile he said, "They had nothing like this when I was there. They were considered rich if they had food and cigarettes."
I was still pretty young (early teens), so I didn't really understand, but in retrospect...Man, I wish I'd asked him a lot more about his experiences.
