- ☆ Ιδανική βάση διαμονής για να ανακαλύψει κανείς τα μυστικά της λίμνης Κερκίνης είναι το αγροτικό κεφαλοχώρι Κερκίνη, το οποίο απέχει 53 χλμ. βορειοδυτικά της πόλης των Σερρών και 95 χλμ από Θεσσαλονίκη. Εδώ βρίσκεται και το Κέντρο Πληροφόρησης Υγροτόπου της λίμνης Κερκίνης. Στο χωριό λειτουργούν ξενώνες, ταβερνάκια με καλό φαγητό και καφενεία.
Το χωριό Κερκίνη είναι χτισμένο πλάι στις δυτικές όχθες της λίμνης. Τα χαμηλά σπίτια του, με κεραμιδένιες στέγες και οι πράσινες αυλές δίνουν μια ιδιαίτερη νότα. Οι κάτοικοί εδώ ασχολούνται κυρίως με τις αγροτικές εργασίες, την κτηνοτροφία και τον τουρισμό. Στο μικρό λιμανάκι, λίγο έξω από το χωριό μικροπαραγωγοί στήνουν τους πάγκους τους με τοπικά παραδοσιακά προϊόντα. Εδώ οι επισκέπτες μπορούν να απολαύσουν μία ξενάγηση στα πιο απόμακρα σημεία της λίμνης με τις παραδοσιακές βάρκες, τις πλάβες. Οι "πλάβες" κατακασκευασμένες από ξύλο, μπορούν να φιλοξενήσουν ακόμα και 18 άτομα καθώς είναι μεγαλύτερες από τις ψαρόβαρκες.
Η περιοχή της Κερκίνης εντάσσεται στους 10 Υγρότοπους Διεθvoύς Σημασίας της Ελλάδας (γvωστoί και ως Υγρότoπoι Ramsar) και περιλαμβάνεται στις 196 Σημαvτικές Περιoχές για τα πoυλιά της Ελλάδας ως Περιοχή Ειδικής Πρoστασίας.☆
☆ The ideal base for discovering the secrets of Lake Kerkini is the rural village of Kerkini, which is 53 km northwest of the town of Serres and 95 km from Thessaloniki. This is also the location of the Lake Kerkini Wetland Information Centre. In the village there are guesthouses, taverns with good food and cafes.
The village of Kerkini is built on the western shores of the lake. Its low houses with tiled roofs and green courtyards give a special touch. The inhabitants here are mainly engaged in agricultural work, animal husbandry and tourism. In the small harbour, just outside the village, small producers set up their stalls with local traditional products. Here visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the most remote parts of the lake in traditional boats, the paves. The "plaves" are made of wood and can accommodate up to 18 people as they are larger than the fishing boats.
The area of Kerkini is included in the 10 Wetlands of International Importance of Greece (also known as Ramsar Wetlands) and is included in the 196 Important Bird Areas of Greece as an Area of Special Protection.☆
