Its a lot more than the child abuse scandal in Ireland that made Ireland more secular.
One man deserves huge praise for the 1967 education act that improved second level education (high school)in Ireland leading to a greater participation in third level (University).
The mans name was Donagh O Malley who fought hard while a member of the Government to improve access to free second level education for all. Every year his colleagues said maybe next year , there is no money in the budget this year.
Having been told there was not the money he called a press conference and announced the new education measures without government colleagues approval. It was so popular with the people that the government foun the money.
A better educated population who came of age in the 1990s saw through the church bullshit.

I was forced to go to church until I was 11. Then my Mom said I didn't have to go if I didn't want to. Never been since. I always thought it was a load of baloney

The only thing religion provides is a form of social club for like minded people to hang out. Anything beyond that is imaginary fluff. There's some value in socializing. But it's often drowned out by the toxic nonsense that goes along with most religious practices.

Murry's comment about the ideological transformation in Ireland is not unique. The Canadian province of Quebec was as strongly Roman Catholic as Ireland, probably even more so yet the "Quiet Revolution" over the ~15 years from the early 1960s to mid 1970s was as complete as the Irish with Quebec today being the most secular Canadian province.

The French colonial project did everything to those it colonised that is happening in France now. That’s not to say that either perpetrator past or present is innocent or guilty. However it strikes me as being equally inhuman. In the past the French, as did all colonial powers consider the “occupied” as less human than they were. Now it is happening on French soil it’s considered an abhorrence, and rightly so.
History is not erased, it has consequences right now in the present and indeed into the future.
Until we all recognise each other’s humanity first only then will be able to understand our shared past and move forward as one human species in a finite world shared with millions of other species!

So many have childhood memories of their entree into 'church'.
Some are good memories some are less than good. If the parents had themselves, the Spirit of God in their lives, they may have been better at nurturing Truth in their own children. Because it is not the denomination or the format or anything else that makes someone a Christian, it is being A Christ One.
The family togetherness, as it used to be for many, of going to church was a wonderful secure tradition. And hearing scripture is valuable. Yet until the person responds to the Father's call, they will not know True Christianity.

It's hard to see what should be a basic right to disagree on things regarding religion and expressing ourselves without governmental repercussion as a privilege. I get how it is a privilege, but my point is it shouldn't be, and this constant tone of "we should be glad for what we have" is instead, for me, a point of frustration of "look at what they don't get to do, they should be allowed to."

I've been a Christian for 10 years and I have never seen a Christian message that was based on a commercial brand name or slogan. Dillahunty talks like it is a regular thing. Either I've seen a skewed sample, or he's seen a skewed sample (because ridiculous things done by nominal Christians go viral in his community), or he's recklessly giving a twisted narrative. Again, I think in 10 hours of mainstream TV news you might get 10 minutes of commentary by a clergyman, whereas if you didn't actually watch TV and listened to Dillahunty you'd think it was happening at least half the time (his exact words: "you'll watch the news and there will be some member of the clergy on to comment on seemingly everything I'm exaggerating slightly "). You're exaggerating egregiously, my friend. That's two strikes in the twisted narrative zone, back to back.

Human needs a north for their moral compass. We know how evil we can be in absense of it. It doesn't matter god exists or not, the thing which stops us from strangling our neighbour is that north. The atheist thinks that we are good by nature and will do good, this is so wrong.

    • @enlacostaizquierda
      @enlacostaizquierda Місяць тому

Atheists don't assume we're good by nature. Rather that society imposes penalties for bad behavior and rewards for good behavior. Most of us don't expect people to be good just for goodness sakes but do think, on the whole, people find it easier to be decent because society has punishments for those that misbehave.

No, atheists do not think that people are good by nature. (because atheists are not a homogenous group)
And to use this god as an abstract standard of morality despite all the evil caused in his name is incredibly naive.
Think of all the racism, homophobia, misogyny, apocalyptic cults and sects, and all the other crimes that have been committed in the name of this god and what the perpetrators thought was God's will.

If you are behaving yourself just because of the carrot and the stick, you realize you arent being moral at all? Just selfish? Atheists are well aware that humans are capable of fucked up evil shit, and unlike the religious nutjobs we dont get to pretend "oh a devil whispered in his ear" no, we have to contend with the fact that humans really do these kinds of things. So what exactly is your point? You cant possibly be implying that a god is needed for a moral compass, do you? If you really think that i'd recommend you go to your local library, pick out any random history book, and you will instantly see how hilariously wrong you are about that.
