  • In this lesson, Maider explains how to describe people in Spanish.
First of all, there are two things that we can describe: personality and physical characteristics. Each of them requires different verbs.
How to describe someone's personality in Spanish
To describe personality traits, you should use the verb “ser” (to be).
E.g.: Tú eres simpático. You ARE nice.
And here’s some vocabulary that you might want to memorize for describing people in Spanish:
    Simpático/ simpática - nice
    Serio/ seria - serious
    Vago/ vaga - lazy
    Educado/ educada - polite
    Describe physical characteristics in Spanish:
Physical characteristics require 3 different verbs: ser (to be), tener (to have) and llevar (in this case, to wear). Here’s how to use each of them:
Ser (to be) + adjective - for something that you are. For example:
    Joven/ Mayor (young/ older)
    Alto/ Bajo (tall/ short)
    Gordo/ Delgado (fat/ slim)
    Guapo/ Feo (pretty/ ugly)
E.g.: Yo soy joven. I am young.
Él es alto. He is tall.
Tener (to have) - to describe the hair, the eyes, the skin.
    Pay attention to these words:
    Pelo (Hair): largo/corto (long/short), liso/rizado (straight/curly) , rubio/moreno (blonde/ brown)
E.g.: Maider tiene el pelo liso y moreno.
    Maider has straight brown hair.
    Ojos/ Eyes: claros/ oscuros (light/dark), verdes/marrones/azules (green/ brown/ blue)
    E.g: Maider tiene ojos marrones.
    Maider has brown eyes.
Piel/ Skin: morena/blanca (tanned or brown/ white or light)
E.g.: Si no tomas sol, tendrás la piel blanca.
If you don’t get any sun, you’ll have white skin.
We also use “tener” with barba (beard) and bigote (moustache).
Llevar (to wear) + noun - to describe something someone is wearing, like clothes or accessories. For example:
Ella lleva gafas. She wears glasses.
Él lleva sombrero. He’s wearing a hat.
