    I grew up in Bundaberg and moved when I was 17 to Brisbane for uni. It is definitely rude, reactive (politically) and confronting at times. However, it is victim to being a town with very little to do, low incomes, high unemployment, poor health services (as the lovely woman highlighted - thanks for sharing your story), a general lack of opportunity and the small town syndrome where everybody knows each other & is in each other’s business.
    A lot of people have never been overseas before and are hostile to foreigners so xenophobia and racism is rampant. It is very homophobic and is also statistically, I believe, the ‘fattest’ town in Australia (media’s language, not mine).
    I am so defensive of my hometown because I think it is so gross & privileged to comment on people here when you have never lived in a town like this. I’m so glad this video showcased some context and the realities of how hard it can be to live in such a place - people are a product of their conditions and that is definitely the case for Bundy!
    We also have stunning beaches, great public schools and some huge brands (Bundaberg Sugar, Bundaberg Rum, Bundaberg Ginger Beer). We are at the bottom of the reef and have beautiful weather. We aren’t all bad and it is a beautiful part of the world so don’t write us off too quickly❤

    The people of Bundaberg probably are expiriencing a surge of not only tourists from overseas, but many immigrants moving there. Housing shortages and jobs becoming fewer is making locals less friendly to newcomers. It's a natural human defense mechanism.

      @Will-nb8qk 7 місяців тому +6

    What that woman said about her medical experience and services for her disabled kids is not rare or unique to Bundaberg. You can have NDIS approved services available but they may not be the appropriate ones to meet the needs of a particular disability. The NDIS has been good to people with visible physical disability’s but not children or adults with developmental disabilities because for that you need people qualified for more than just care assistance or house cleaning and assisted shopping. You need therapy services and people qualified in assisting people with complex needs. That is why the NDIS is failing. .

This leads at times to High worker turn over and Burn out leading to lack of care or people straight up quitting all the time or the clients just checking out because they know we can't help them. My current client is a prime example Her problem is not physical she doesn't need any physical help, And so we just kinda muddle through helping as best we can while complaining to our higher ups Trying to get more specialized help.

    Bundaberg has the highest level of savings per person in Australia, 7 beaches all family safe, highest ownership of hotrod and classic cars, highest level of Mercedes Benz ownership, highest number of registered trailer boats, the reef is directly off the shore and 3 magnificent coral islands off the coast. In fact it's a Mecca for scuba diving, 2nd best climate in the World. Turtle nesting and Whale watching seasons. Plenty of pubs and clubs with live music, cheap freshly produced fruit and vegetable stalls on the roadside. Fresh seafood and very cheap. Jobs are a plenty and housing is very cheap. You can focus on the negative but the positives are a plenty.

Wait times are crazy, people need support and they have to wait for the government red tape then wait more once they do something its ridiculous. I'd probably loose my job if they knew i was speaking out but come on i like to help people but its hard when your first point of contact and everyone is cutting you down when i can only listen to them and forward them onto NDIS services. In the big cities there is support ngl but in smaller cities and towns its shocking. If i was thay lady I'd send a letter to Bill Shorten letting him know of the failures I'd speak with a lawyer and sue the bloody health department of QLD for the death of her babies.

    Having grown up in QLD, but moving to NSW and then to SA and then back to NSW, I can honestly say the nicest most caring and hospitable people are in SA. SA often gets overlooked as a place to live, and I get it, it’s friggen cold.. lol. But living there opened my eyes to how communities should be. I had a toddler and a baby while living there, and the amount of times strangers helped me in public by getting the door for me while I was struggling with a pram, or even just entertaining my toddler for a bit while I tended to the baby… oh my gosh, I’m tearing up about the kindness. If it wasn’t so cold there I would’ve settled there permanently. It opened my eyes to how QLDers in general just aren’t like that.
