I was at York University from 1970-1973 and I would say that, along with Wilfid Mellers, John Paynter's infectious enthusiam and trust in the creative musical spark latent in all children, was a complete ground changer for me. It inspired me for the rest of my life as a Music Teacher in state schools. There was a brief and exciting time when the doors of real musical creativity and imagination were opened up to all. And where are we now? Just don't ask . . . . But it was fantastic to have been part of that democratisation of music in schools and to have come into contact with people like John.
