- This is the second episode in our UA-cam Q&A series and the question I was asked is about centering a name in the back of a belt. This can be tricky from a layout standpoint, but my hope is that this video will help to clarify it a bit.

I'm a newbie and I just wanted to say, you are a great teacher. I'm learning so much and I appreciate your thoughtful and thorough approach to explaining and demonstrating. Not only are you an artist, but your teaching ability is a gift!
Thank you so much for this video! I’m new to leather working and needed this information. You just got a new subscriber.
I was tought this method many years ago and it still works. Great vid.
P.S. I did stamp a name upside down once before. Follow the rules.😆😎👍
Very good explanation Mr Don. Wish I found the video before making my first tooled belt. Full Viking knot pattern and Fenrir on each end. A band name in the middle. Ended up with the name NOT been on the middle due to wrong measurements. Needless to say that after 10hrs work, it wasn't a happy day
Great video, small tip: Center: Take the end of tape roll to the bend measurement point then look to the roll over point of your tape This is your center point.
Another of Don's outstanding How-To videos that teaches you years of experience for your belt projects and how to achieve the best results for #Branding #Names #Initials on #Belts plus great fitting. Thanks Don, following you now on Twitter.
+Larry Baker thank you so much dude! Appreciate the support!
Awesome. I'm a rookie hobbyist wanting to make a belt for my nephews with their names and have been puzzling over this; thanks a bunch for the help.
Don, great information. Thank you. I'm glad I found your channel. Hope you are able to make some more video's. All of them I have seen have had some really good tips and advise. Thanks again.
Thank YoU for Sharing it DoN....Your Tooling work is the work of a Maestro''
thank you Don, this is exactly what i was looking for!
Exactly what Chuck Dorset would say. 😁
I love your videos!! Such good information for those of us starting a new hobby. Thank you!
Ohhhh! THANKYOU!!
I appreciate you.👍
Thank you for sharing so helpful ! Makes life a little easier haha
Don thank you very much for the information you do a great job on your videos I really enjoy them and they're quite informative again thanks!
Ron.
Very informative! Thank you! 🥰🥰
Love the videos, but to touch on this old one: How a belt is worn is entirely upon the person wearing the belt. For example, I'm left handed, so if you tooled the belt the way you do, it'd be upside down for me because I wear my belt the other direction. So always good to ask which side they wear their belt to.
After watching the video, I realized I put my belt on backwards too. LoL
Good information....thanks.
Great video and many thanks Sir!
I know this video is 4-5 years old, but I have just watched it for the 11th or 12th time and I still have the same question. I am probably overlooking something very simple or maybe over thinking it, but here goes.
You measure a belt blank from the bend to the middle hole, not the end of the buckle. Doesn't the length of the buckle to be used affect the fit as well as the center position of the name on the back? Is the small difference unimportant?
I was thinking the same thing!
Great information. Thanks
Thanks neighbor, very informative. Just retired and thought i would give this a try. Keep up the good work. where can i find your books please?
Very helpful! Thanks!
Im from the country so my math is a little slow! Funny stuff
Very informative thanks
Big help man, a good video shows it real clear. Is it just me or could your sound level be just a bit higher? If noone else has said anything then its just me being old and a bit deaf!! Keep the videos coming, as new learner at 65 you are a big help..
Thanks for letting me know about the volume! Let me know if our newest video is any better... trying to learn best volume settings.
thx Don your always help full
Good video, thanks Don.
I have a question. Why isn't the belt length the distance between the center hole and the end of the buckle, which that center hole goes into the tang ... instead of to the bend? Just curious. I'll email you too.
Did you find out?
I just came across your videos, and I am really impressed. Very enjoyable!! I am a novice, which might explain my ignorance with the following question.
On the belts I've made so far, I have measured from the far end of the buckle to the hole of an existing belt to get the center of the back. My logic is that the length around my middle is covered by what is from buckle end to the hole I'm using. Measuring from the fold to the hole to be used does not seem to take in to account the length of the buckle which is also covering my waist. Does the type buckle make a difference? What am I missing?
Again, enjoying your videos, and thanks for the sharing of your knowledge.
+Mike McKnight true center would be bend to center hole (or hole u wear it in)... this measurement is found using the time of buckle you want to wear with the belt but I do not include the buckle length in that measurement or it will be off.
very helpful thankyou
Don, your videos have been very helpful! Thank you for taking the time to share your process. Do you have any recommendations on where to get a maker stamp made?
Thanks so much for the support! I recommend Steel Stamps Inc... that’s who have always made mine and they are great!
Don Gonzales Awesome! I'll check them out. Thanks again Don!!!
Thanks for al the usefull information .. it saved me a lot of time and leather :-) I would like to receive the information if possible.
What if the customer gives you the length of existing belt and the waist size of the person getting belt (surprise). How do you calculate then.
Thanks Don, Great info. You measure from the "Fold" to the hole they "Use". Is there any need to consider the distance of the buckle? Trophy buckles can have 2" to 3" from fold to hole and center bar buckles can be 1" to 2". Does that distance ever need to be considered in centering the name? Thanks for all you do!!
Thanks man! As long as they are wearing the type of buckle they are going to use with ur belt then that measurement takes the buckle size into consideration.
I’m looking to learn some shadow box techniques. Do you have any advice
Hey don how do you know how big the hole is for the buckle. Is there a standard size for 1 1/2 belts
Do you have a video on antiquing?
Found it
So I want to make a belt for my father for his birthday but he doesn’t have one that I can currently measure. How then would I measure things out properly so I don’t make his too short or too long?
How much space do you put between each hole, I know you said 5 holes total not how many inches between each hole
Another great video. How thick of leather do you use to make your belts.
I use 9 oz or so for body and 3/4 oz for liner. Thanks so much!
My Dad like to wear his belts in the second loop of his pants so How would I make it so his Name (JACK ) so it would be center in the back he has worn it this way since he was a teenager so the buckle does not cut into his belly. So us kids also wear it this way.He does not know I am attempting to do this since he lives in Iowa and I live in Nebraska
would this work with letter stamps? thanks.
Very good video. One question is the 30" the size of the belt or what? I'm a little confused. I noted that you came up with 37 1/2 " and then you split that in half. I am trying to learn how to make a belt. This will be my first attempt. I bought Al Stohlman Belts Galore, but I still open for any other help that i can help.
+Charlie Sullivan I'm not sure where the 30" u referenced came from... in this video the belt size is 37" and we split that to find center. The actual belt blank was cut 47.5"... I take the bend to hole measurement that the customer gives us for size and I add 10.5" to that for the cut length of the belt blank. There is a video on "measure for your belt" tab on our website homepage that shows how the customer needs to measure for the size. Hope this helps and if not let me know. Thanks a bunch!
👍😉

We. Are here to learn how to center the name not all the other bs your talking about
Great info Don!👍
Hello lots of good information thank
I have to tell men especially that the waist size on their pants doesn't mean anything. I had my son tell me he was 32 waist, I looked at him and asked if he had measured that and he answered that was his largest pant size as he usually wore a 30 waist. He measured at 35 inches. Women have always had "vanity sizing", but in the 70s men's pant sizes stopped matching their true waist size. I have pants that range from size 44 to 48 and 50 is my true size. Yeah I know, I have big bones. lol
Great video and great information! thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I have learned a lot watching, and Im sure avoided lots of mistakes. thanks again
