  • What is the difference between the high quality reproduction belts vs. the mainstream belts that you can get for much less? And how do they compare with originals? This episode dives into these questions and allows you to gain more knowledge in how to set up your impression to look like a soldier from the 1860's, not a reenactor.

    I can see by the “V” on the quality reproductions that you got some good Duvall leathers. It’s a shame he stopped making Civil War reproductions.But I managed to get a C.S. set from him one year before he called it quites. And I’ll never sale them. Great vid!

    This was a useful and interesting video on sabre belts. I have just "defarbed" my own from mainstream length to the more historically accurate 10" and 25". Huge difference in carrying the sabre.

    Actually I realized why the straps on the reproductions are longer while making a 3D replica of one of these belts recently. The ordnance manual does set them to 17 inches (front) and 34 inches ( rear) accordingly, but after I measured a well laid out picture of the original piece it became clear the ordnance manual means the lenght of the whole strap, before it's bent on both ends to be secured by these large rivets, which obviously makes them shorter. On the picture I measured and where all the other dimensions do fit the OM specifications, the factual lenght of straps is 9,9 front and 27 rear. On reverse side the lenght of spare material is about 3 inches on every side for both straps. Add there remaining inch for the lenght of bending, and there you have it. I suppose the reproduction makers checked the manual but didn't research this far.

    Thank you for all those details, I'm planning to make one for myself! Just a question, are Conferate Saber Belt similiar in the pattern? I guess the main difference, of course, will be the buckle.

    could you explain how the belt buckle is to be mounted on the saber belt, for many of these belts have no buckle mounted on them

    I've been wondering for some time now about the use of the "Sam brown" shoulder strap. Was it for enlisted cavalry only or can officers wear it out of preference?

    Steve, you mentioned a lot of things about the saber belt but, the one thing I'm most interested in, you never touched. I have a fair quality saber belt which has the saber rings to hang it from the belt but it has no hook to hang the saber when dismounted. I can, of course, make one but does it go to the front of the saber ring or to the rear? I was closely watching the video and it seems there is one that has the hook located in front of the ring and another with the hook to the rear. Which is correct? Also, can you do a video on setting up the saber belt's hangers and all of that so that I can GET T RIGHT, the first time or do you already have a video on that that I have missed?
    I appreciate the videos and the knowledge as I am probably too old and also disabled to the point that I wouldn't be useful as a recruit. 68 and have a bone/cartilage disease that eats the cartilage from all the joints. So, I get used as one of the Generals at the signing of the Treaties between the US and the Eastern Shoshones in 1851 and 1868. 2 Different eras is problematic for correct uniforms for both time frames, though! So far, I have well over$400 in this little endeavor and the way things are going i may never get to do much with it!
    Thanks much for the information. Also, Do you have any Field or staff OFFICER videos??

    Little difficult to see the width of the original strap for the saber. Am I correct in it being thinner width crossing over in the opposite direction as to the carbine rifle with a wider strap for the time period and originals? Thank you in advance should you or whoever responds. In mean time, I'll continue reading more on uniforms.

    Did cavalry men carry percussion caps for their pistols in the same pouch as the carbine caps or where they carried in the pistol cartridge box?

    • @drunkenirishmstr
      @drunkenirishmstr 4 роки тому

      Ricardo Aguirre I have watched several of the 11th OVC videos. His pistol cartridge rolling tutorial showed that the caps for the pistols were in the ammunition boxes in the leather pistol cartridge box. When the manufacturers made the rounds for the pistols, caps accompanied the rounds. The 6 round boxes “packs” were either in a wooden box or wrapped in packing paper. I hope this helps

    I really enjoy your run down on leathers, but remember you are not the only mounted service... us the kings of battle our also mounted, in my years of reacting I have actually seen more mounted artillery units actually mounted cavalry(north east America) our unit runs 3 original cannons. My guess is the reproductions are made more for unmounted user

      Rob,
      We did not forget about you Arty guys. Our focus was on the cav side of things. However, there is not much difference between the two designs as seen in the 1862 Ordnance Manual Below:
      Cavalry Belts:
      Sabre-belt, (buff-leather.)-Waist-belt, length 36 to 40 inches, width 1.9 inch ;
      1 square loop No. 46, 2 D rings No. 2 B, (brass,) for attaching the slings and the shoulder-strap;
      1 hook, (brass,) riveted on one end by 3 brass wire rivets No. 15 ;
      1 loop, (cast brass,) sewed on the other end to connect with the plate;
      1 shoulder-strap, 41 inches long, 1.125 inch wide, with 2
      hooks, (brass ;)
      2 sabre-slings, 1.125 inch wide; front sling 17 inches long, rear sling 34 inches ;
      4 studs (brass) for slings ;
      1 sabre-hook, (brass wire No. 7.)
      Artillery:
      Sabre-belt, (black buff-leather. ) -Length 36 to 40 inches, width 1 . 9 inch ;
      2 leather chapes sewed on the outside of the belt for attaching 2 brass loops No. 6, for the slings ;
      2 sabre-slings and 4 brass studs, like those for the cavalry sabre-belt;
      1 sabre-hook, (brass wire No. 7;)
      1 loop (cast brass) sewed on one end to connect with the plates ;
      1 hook (brass) riveted to the other end with 3 brass wire rivets No. 15.
      Sabre-belt plate like those for the cavalry.
      The manual specified the same buff leather for both branches. So, while we focus on cavalry items, there are many parallels to artillery too.

      Please see some different ways and thoughts on this on the AC here:
      www.authentic-campaigner.com/forum/showthread.php?17669-Officer-Shoulder-Boards-How-to-attach&highlight=shoulder+boards
      In short, I'll use Curt Schmidt's Quote on that page:
      "I whip stitch the four corners. Prior to the late 1850's it was not unusual to wear one's shoulder straps OVER one's epaulettes- so the "long sides" of the straps were not sewn down. Following the discontinued practice, I sometimes whip stitch just the ends. Originals do show up sewn on all four sides. (Although there are always "variations on a theme" such as the image of Captain George Meade wearing his epaulettes over his straps. Perhaps he was too lazy to remove them.. ) And last is the question of placement- their being found on the shoulder seam and as far "in" as centered on the shoulder. " Curt Schmidt 5-14-2008

      Sody, I don't know. I am not in that circle but I do know reenactments occur there, just don't know where or when or how active people are out there. We are based in Wyoming, which is also from the Meca of reenacting but the key is to stay active. Sorry I couldn't help any more.

    Take a look at the pict 20:40 - 20:45 { Holster} To what you are saying .. seen a lot off Civil War pict like that over the yrs left hander and also a lot of HOLSTER butt to the rear ..

    • @illusionclassicrock6742
      @illusionclassicrock6742 6 років тому

      Like many original photographs from the day, that photo is actually reversed. You can tell because his saber and shoulder strap is fastend on what looks like the right side instead of the left. So in reality, his holster is butt forward on his right side.
