I enjoyed it too, but if I'm honest, I'll use any means at my disposal to rid my property of rats and deal with any consequences later. Obviously, natural predators are preferred, but they won't eradicate the rat population, only control it at best. Poison is an option, but only as a last resort, and used very carefully.

What
How fabulous to see that Bedlington winning in shows but also able to rat! I wish every bench(confirmation) show dog also had to prove fit to purpose like herding, lure coursing or hunt trial, or general canine fitness for toy breeds, in order to title. Would end nonsense in breeds like extreme flews, too short faces, thick dwarfed bones to the point that injure spines...etc. Fit to purpose and fit to love.
I thoroughly enjoy watching a dog do the work it's bred for, whether that's herding, ratting, coursing, or whatever. I think it makes for happier dogs too.
me too
@@Dirtyboxer1 it sure is satisfying to see dogs doing what they do best.
Oh, I totally agree. People nowadays breed for all the wrong things and the dogs suffer with joint and health issues because of it. Let them be selected for fitness, temperament, and trainability first. Color and cuteness should be waaaay down on the list.
When you see the dogs in assembly, looks like war is going to happen.

Holy crap, that retired showdog is *lightning fast.* I've had hunting dogs (beagles, Collies, a rabbit poodle, a terrier, and a Blue Tick Coonhound) as well as a 26 pound orange tabby hunting cat named "Spunky" that belonged to my sister, we used it to kill Chipmunks, rats, mice, squirrels and groundhogs... And I've never seen a dog that fast in my life, as the showdog. A canine Speedy Gonzales.
Oh god, Spunky is such a great cat name hahahaha
@@zeldola126 He was quite "Spunky", too! He would run all the neighborhood dogs off our farm with prejudice! And he'd curl up at night on the porch with our dogs. It was my sister's cat but I think he really owned us. He was normal, about 13 pounds, until he "tommed out" and got that great big head of a tomcat. His body followed suit and he doubled in weight, all of it pure muscle. He even killed a half grown deer about 50 pounds, which, was about twice his weight. He kept rats and mice off our property.

What I find amazing by using mink, dogs, and some ingenious traps, you can control / eliminate rats and mice without using poison! We hear about raptors dying because an owl or hawk catches and eats a poisoned rat. So what an amazing win win! You give someone a hobby / job, their furry friends take care of a problem, and nothing is poisoned!

I think there might have been too many dogs too close to the cans when you were trying. If everyone with a dog took a few steps back and had their dogs on the ground but spaced out enough that their leashes couldn't cross over the rat would hit a wall of dogs once it escaped the can. You wouldn't have to send people and dogs down the path to try to find a rat that has most likely disappeared. Not everyone had a job to do so they were getting in each others way at certain points.
