This was a great video I'm really enjoying this series. My experience with deck personification is heavily influenced by my autism. I used to not understand that people were personifying decks for the most part and I would get extremely wrapped up in trying to be "proper" "for the deck". I set expectations for myself way too high in terms of the energy I had to put into each reading of prepping the space/energy/deck and then cleansing afterwards. And then I would feel guilty when I couldn't keep up with that as if I was insulting the deck/tarot as a whole. Coming back to tarot years later and watching different perspectives like both Dawn's and Lisa's channels has helped me to much better contextualize what tarot means to me and how it fits into my life. Personification is a very important part of that, and so is the energy of the deck, but now the pressure is off and I feel like I can actually get to know my decks. I've also been letting myself research decks and pick up more to suit specific needs. It's funny, I was doing "interview" spreads with decks which was inspired by various videos betwixt the tarot-tuber videos. In interviewing my Stolen Child deck and then in one of my Lord of the Rings decks I had asked about what role the deck could fit in my life and both decks "responded" with a king card in different suits (both of which suited the decks very well). Now I can think of questions in terms of "hmm, is this something the King of Cups would be helpful for or the King of Pentacles?" I can only hope and dream I connect with two more decks that fill in the missing suits haha. The stolen child deck also pulled the hierophant in regards to this question and I also feel that energy within the decks personality but that's all just a framework to help me think about the decks as tools, I liked that descriptor. So overall I feel now my relationship with the decks is much healthier and functional as opposed to before, and I feel like it's helping me understand tarot better as a whole.
This is such a great conversation. I’m imagining using my Curious Creatures with a busy collage deck I’m laughing over the Curious Creatures personalities chatting about another deck.
I absolutely stand in the middle 😂. I just recently dropped a reflection video on a few decks I do personify and how the rest are just paper if you wanna see it. I still didn’t know why tho, so enlightening it is not. 😂😂😂😂
Loved your video!! I would say I’m similar in that some decks give off a stronger vibe than others. I suppose I think of it more as tone rather than personality with my decks, kind of like fashion! Certain outfits have certain tones that I choose based on the vibes I’m looking for - sassy vs cozy vs chic etc.
@@pointedlogic You know what I do that sometimes too with some decks. This is all such an interesting topic isn’t it. I really liked what Dawn Michelle said in this video about using personality traits as a common language to describe decks. I stated to wonder if I sometimes do that subconsciously, ya know. Thanks so much for watching my video 🥰.
I use the language of personification with my decks. I only read for myself, so my practice always comes back to me and my internal landscape. Personification of my decks really comes down to how my Intuition reacts to the imagery, keywords, and guidebook.
I Absolutely Personification decks, and many other things. Even objects, my father carried a buckeye in his pocket for luck, I have that buckeye, it's in a special place which makes me think of my father. I talk to my plants, they each have a personality. The personality they have are the ones I give them, how they make me feel, how they effect my energy and emotions. It's that book you love , you read over and over again, or a movie you have watched so many times you can remember every word. It's personal to each of us, it's in the name it's self , personal -ity.
I would say I don't personify my decks. Although my collection is small and I only keep the decks whose artwork resonates with me and looking at them, they're probably all the same (honest but a bit hand holdy). For example I would never bring in the Deviant Moon because of the way the art work makes me feel. For me it all comes down to the art really and how it makes me feel, what it brings out of my un/sub conscious - the same as any painting on a gallery wall and I don't personify them. I do bond with some decks better than others, but those will give me different types of reading. So, in a way like a person, they can be in different moods if you look at it through a lens of personification. Fascinating topic. Thank you both!
This discussion was so interesting, because I have never found any tarot deck to have a personality or distinct voice, the reading I get will be very similar in tone whichever deck I choose. I'm fascinated by the way other people have such a different experience.
The Forest of Enchantment Tarot (a deck I love a lot) is a very shadowy deck because it's based on fairy tales, most of which are only barely sanitized horror stories under a deceptively cheerful haze. It's no accident that these stories were collected by the Brothers Grimm, and we all love them because they make it safe for us to be creeped out even when we're small.
Fab convo! So timely. Just yesterday I created spreadsheet for all my tarot and a spreadsheet for all my oracle to keep track. "Vibe" was next to rating. Words like kind, kick in the teeth deck, fluffy, funny, snarky, cheeky, serious, heavy hitter, all purpose reader, trickster, empathetic appear in my vibe column. It's fun to play with that and sort to find decks easily with similar personalities. Or with opposites. I got rid of 2 decks that creeped me out. Mary-El Tarot 2nd edition gave me rough reads and did NOT like me. I even saged it, then got rid of it. Trickster dark energy for me and unfriendly. Hermetic Tarot felt...heavy. shudder. Sold that one, too.
This was such a neat topic to ponder! I’ve only had one deck that was “buzzy” before I even opened it up - and it has -a loud and clear “voice” or voices - at first flip through - I think there are levels of personification - as Dawn mentioned - because other decks aren’t as distinct. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! Such a great video!
Great topic!! For me personally, I tend to personify my decks the more I have. I don't remember doing it when I had just a few. The more you add to your collection the more their "personality" or their specific energy stands out. For me anyway, because they're all different and I use each one according to what kind of reading I want to do. Also, some have feminine energy and some are masculine, just like some are gentle and some are heavy. Hope that makes sense:) Great video!! 😉👌
Love hearing you two chat 🥰 I definitely do this totally organically with a lot of things. It’s a way of establishing an understanding and I’m sure somewhere deep in our lizard brain it’s a way of enhancing importance to things so we care for them more or something like that 🦎
Interesting that you associate the personification with the deck itself. To me, they're conduits of "voices" from guides that have preferences and opt to talk through one pack as opposed to another. Like choosing a certain platform to express themselves. So much so that their "voices" change drastically. And the tone doesn't necessarily match the art either. Fascinating topic !!! Thank you so much for sharing ❤❤
Yes! I have one that is strictly HEKATE. I shuffled and pulled from 4 oracle decks and got the HEKATE card from each. When I asked which card best represents her, Queen of Swords came up. ❤️
I tend to personify any inanimate object… that’s just my connection and proclivity towards focusing on “things”. My connection or relationship to things is sometimes more personal to me than my relationship with a person. I didn’t know I was doing this until a colleague/friend pointed out that I personify things 10 years ago… I was in my 20s. Different strokes for different folks. Some personalities are “people” or “identity” related and some personalities are “things” or “sensory” related/focused. For me, things tend to stick around longer than people so in my mind these things matter to me as if they take on a personhood. I wouldn’t say attributing a “thing” to a “person”. It’s more like the deck is ITS OWN person. It’s quite an interesting conversation to have!! Some people get to squeeze mommy when they are little and scared and others get to squeeze a doll or teddy bear… who’s mommy at this point? LOL 😂 Kind of silly but makes the point for me. At the end of the day we are personifying in a language of archetypes. I name my plants 😂 and I attribute plant or deck characteristics to my boyfriend. It’s interesting that you talk about the smugness of people who do not personify decks or “things”. I’ve learned that people who personify things (including me) tend to be of indigenous ancestry… it’s how stories were shared about the world around us (Greek myths about natural phenomena) and before we had actual language to communicate (brought on by white culture). It’s why we name hurricanes and storm systems human names. Literally, people have made fun of me for personifying things.
It was so much fun and interesting to watch. A really nice topic to talk about. So fun to see different and similar point of view. I personify my decks but never did with my books for example. I love this serie❤
Such an interesting topic. I still think of myself as new to Tarot, mainly because I feel I’m just now starting to “get” it. I find the more I learn about tarot, the more comfortable I get with Tarot the more I personify my Tarot tools. The first deck I personified is Future Ancestor deck which I found through Dawn Michele. That is also one deck that feels gender-related to me. I feel it as a female. I absolutely personify my cars, my books, my pens, my paints…Thanks for all your thoughts.
The council that you mentioned, I think you were thinking about the council of 7 tag that was started by Natalia of Tarot Shrink back when her channel was Ouroboros. She deleted all of those videos but the tag still exists.
Yes Dawn Michelle!! I have a pretty, fluffy deck everyone loves, but it tells me harsh things, like the nitty gritty of the situation and it's always so unexpected! For me, it's the Crystal Visions tarot and it was ironically my first deck along with the original Rider Waite deck. Funny how that happens -a fairytale love kind of deck and it gives me like all swords! The opposite is also true -the Darkness of Light isn't dark or serious for me, it's strangely comforting. Weird huh!😂
Comment for Dawn Michelle, you have the gorgeous streaks in your hair that I’m hoping mine morph into. My roots look very much like your ends so I’m hopeful! As for personification, I most definitely feel that with my decks in both tarot and oracle, there was one fairy deck that had terrible photo bash art but it was no nonsense, cut to the very heart if you’re ready or not, kind of Queen of Swords energy now that I think about it.
I have had a similar experience with Forest of Enchantment. I thought it was gonna be soft lovely, but that deck will hand me my ass. It tells the truth no matter how hard it is for me to hear.
What a great conversation ladies. I definitely personify my decks, some more than others. Some decks I do feel like are communication devices with other beings like the Tarot of the Sidhe. I do also believe that Crystals not only carry memory but they do or can carry a sentient being within them. I feel this more with Crystal Skulls. I also believe that Momma Gaea is a sentient (celestial) being as well and they come from her. Sorry I just got way off topic, but also I call my solar pool skimmer Chad...giggles. Wonderful topic ladies, thank you for sharing.
I love this conversation! I'm somewhere in the middle I think, I'm too cognizant of decks being objects to give them pronouns and think of them as sentient beings. But I do see how people associate certain emotions and feelings with specific decks and that happens to me as well.
On pairing marseille, I tried pairing marseille with SoulCards and at times, Wild Unknown Archetypes. It worked very well because of just how different they are, where one is very evocative and emotional and the other is very straightforward. However, Marseille trumps by themselves work for both very intuitive and spiritual and very mundane and earthly questions for me just because they can be read in different levels.
Great conversation, you two are super insightful and a wonder to listen to. I bought the tarot of the Abyss to be my shadow go to deck but it said NOPE. Not me, I'm all bubbles and love for you jajha it was an interesting experience to have. I can come with all of my intention to set a purpose or personality to a deck but I feel the deck has the last "word" 😂
Love this, as I absolutely personify my decks (and pretty much any other inanimate object in my life--if I bump into a chair, I will apologize to it ☺). Tying in the concept of animism is fascinating as well, and I heard your discussion on that with Benebell over at Three Fat Readers, too--definitely a great topic to explore further sometime! Thanks so much to you and Dawn for sharing your thoughts here meanwhile. Love it when you two collab. 🥰
Hi Ladies, This was awesome to watch... I loved hearing about this topic. It made me really look at what decks I grab for what reading etc. I have the Mara Lunne Tarot....I actually have a 2 copies because I love the art work so much and thought it would be one of my go to decks for myself and others. However....I can read with it, but takes me to Rogue most times. I haven't given up on it yet. I have put it away and I am going to going back to it in a bit. I just haven't yet found how to get on the same wave length to extend myself with this deck yet. It really throw me for a 6 as I thought because I loved the deck so much and I was so looking so forward to having it in my hands that once we met then it would be an easy reader. However this situation has made me love the deck even more. Like she is playing hard to get and she is making me try hard to connect to her. Yes for me the Deck carries a female energy. Its like I know she will be worth it but i just need to find the right spread or find the best way to meet her at her level. At the moment she has a little mystery to her like the moon card.....but its like I KNOW we are going to bond somehow. And I don't even know how I know this...I just do. Thanks again. Terri From Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
Some decks are Jeffrey Combs decks. Plays multiple roles and is awesome in all of them. Some decks are John Wayne. John Wayne plays himself as the character. A convincing cowboy stereotype, but not convincing as a different kind of character.
@lisapapez I totally understand your view on having a conversatiin with a deck and then layering your relationship with the deck to build the personification with it. As you get to know your deck, bond with it, use it, the relationship can get more intense, more loving or even more distant. As with your culling videos if you are no longer feeling that relationship the deck kind of becomes hard to communicate with and doesnt get chosen to use as much because you lose that feeling of connection with it. Eg like i dont really understand what its saying to me whereas if i pick up THIS deck its going to tell me direct and straight to the point. I hope that makes sense
Interesting! I feel thst different decks have different themes. Like, The Light Seer's is good for self insight and healing; The Godfather Tarot and Real Talk Tarot are more business-y... Like that. I'm not sure that's personification, though.
Love this topic! I totally personify my decks. I think that the process of personification stems from the connection we form with a particular deck. We recognise a certain memory triggered by the energy we feel coming from the deck and pair it with the "personality" we associate with it. Having said that, while decks like the Gentle Tarot are thought as "kind" by the tarot community in general, there seems to be different opinions on "mean" decks... I wonder why ;)
interesting conversation! to me, all magickal tools have a spirit & life of their own🖤✨or maybe spirits/energies that hang out around them. i tend to treat my adopted decks as beings of their own🙃same with crystals, plants, pendulums, etc. something i inherited from my reiki training but that also resonated deeply with how i felt on the subconscious/personal level. guess that could be qualified as animism as you mentioned!
It’s funny you asked about a deck that ends up being completely different than what I thought it was going to be. I jus got the Moonchild Shadow Work and for some reason I thought it would call me out or be harsher but it is so supportive and comforting. One difficult reading I had the tower, Death and other difficult cards but it came through so softly and comforting. I guess my first clue would be it’s a Danielle Noel deck 😂 but I still thought it was going to be darker.
Love this, I'm very new to tarot, have 12 so far. Didn't even realise that I personified my decks, but it's a feeling, like Beautiful Creatures feels very naughty, but is kind. I also find Shadowland fun but spicy x😊
Great topic, very interesting! Im still pretty new so I haven't personified any of my decks..I have a huge collection of 7, lol! I don't even have a favorite which is disappointing. Maybe I haven't worked with them long enough yet. idk. Anyhoo, this was great, thanks! 💗
30:57 yes the tarot of the sidhe is not as fae to me either!!!! 32:57 do you wonder if your energy chanfed in order to work with the deck, maybe your energy vs deck energyboriginally didnt flow... but we as humans mature... change... shift and so does our energy and maybe that shift allowed you more with the deck later. This was such a fascinating discussion!
Sooo🤔, some decks will hold back on giving you a 10/9 Swords, Tower, Death, Devil circus...? Like, significantly fewer times with those types of cards? 😮If i understand you guys correctly... And that then creates the difference in reading personality i suppose. I don't think that happens for me at all. I do see different personalities in decks but that's just based on what the art is like. Not on what it says. They'll all have my guts for breakfast, some are just a bit more polite about it 😅... I realize they reflect what i am like if i just admit it😅. Thanks ladies❤!
I personally personify my decks. They will choose their pronouns and names after a while but also I can’t hear the voice of all my decks. It’s like half and half and the ones that I can’t hear them I’ll ask what’s up why we not talking and they will explain to me they are but I’m not able to understand them and they ask me to move them along to someone who does and they always know who they should be with. But they are all very distinctive and have become friends and family and they don’t like me having more decks(I have like 20 decks) they want me to use them more. Also when I’ve moved the decks that didn’t work with me to someone new and when they read with them I can hear them. One such example is the fountain tarot. Love the art but nothing and when I rehoused it I got to really meet them for the first time and her name is Anna and is a quiet meek person that likes to have long deep conversations one on one. And when it comes to personifying a deck based on looks are not true for me and here is a example with the sun and moon tarot the personality that come is a old regal woman like Lady Tremaine from Cinderella she talks all proper but bully’s the other tarot decks into giving readings the way she wants them oh and she goes by the name Moon. So yay art and personality are totally different
Love this conversation It is so funny, I bought the Monstarot and the Whispering Spirits at the same time. Since I just KNEW i would love the Monstarot, I started with Whispering Spirits. It is my favorite soooo after several years, I have passed the Monstarot on to my little sister. Also, I definitely was agreeing with deck personification. It was really great listening to this discussion
Within the context of deck personalities as roles or jobs, I find that deck interviews usually don't align with the art style or how one would think they could be used. Most notably, in my deck interview of the Squidcake Marseille, the spread implied the use of the deck should be for guidance on career and educational decisions and specifically should not be for readings of any emotional matters, personal or otherwise. I expected a fluffy and humorous reader for mundane daily events.

I too apologize to chairs, trees and the like if I bump into them LOL I thought I was the only one. It's a vast source of amusement to my kids.
@@whalesong813 Bahaha, oh excellent! We are not alone! 🙌 And I'm sure the objects appreciate our courtesy. ☺
YES I totally get what you mean here!!
This was so great! I loved every minute of it! 💓
I wonder why ;)
now I want to pair tarot of Vampyres with little bug oracle lol😂
🤣
interesting conversation! to me, all magickal tools have a spirit & life of their own🖤✨or maybe spirits/energies that hang out around them. i tend to treat my adopted decks as beings of their own🙃same with crystals, plants, pendulums, etc. something i inherited from my reiki training but that also resonated deeply with how i felt on the subconscious/personal level. guess that could be qualified as animism as you mentioned!
Really enjoyed watching this conversation. I am a little in the middle.😅
Everything is vibrating. Animals have souls. 😢😢😢
There are UA-camrs who “Date their Deck”. It’s fun to watch.
Beautiful Creatures feels naughty to me too!! I call it a bratty deck
Forest of enchantment seemed mad that I thought it would be light and fluffy. I’ve had it for 3 months .. it’s still mad
Love this - thank you for sharing your perspective! :)
Multi purpose deck = best supporting actor? Or is it even more of a chameleon, jack of all trades?
Within the context of deck personalities as roles or jobs, I find that deck interviews usually don't align with the art style or how one would think they could be used. Most notably, in my deck interview of the Squidcake Marseille, the spread implied the use of the deck should be for guidance on career and educational decisions and specifically should not be for readings of any emotional matters, personal or otherwise. I expected a fluffy and humorous reader for mundane daily events.
Had to pause the video to comment. I consider myself an animist and I do trim my decks lol it's not like they can feel it.
LOL I so appreciate that you shared this!!! :D I was so curious about that!
@@Lisa_Papez 😂😂😂 you're welcome!
I don't personify my decks.
