American, British and Russian aircraft makers all use those French systems (CATIA series) cause it's the undisputed standard. Some people might argue that the Rafale's non retractable fuel probe doesn't look good. For sure. But the French engineers made their maths and found out that the additional drag was more than balanced with weight saving and superior reliability. Furthermore the larger tube diameter allows refueling in 30 seconds instead of 2 minutes.

If anyone has ruined the deal, it's the BJP. The numbers they've ordered are far too few; a mere eyewash. Not the same mission and cost ;-) . F-22 is probably the best fighter in 2018 (with or w/o AEW aircrafts) but was designed for this sole mission. Rafale is a swing-role aircraft, designed for strike, nuclear mission, recce, WVR & BVR fights, SEAD/DEAD.

Nice looking jet but the first thing I noticed was the lack of rear visibility due to the metal bulkhead behind the navigator (or whatever he is called in the French AF). The Typhoon (and a few American jets) have a higher cockpit and a glass rear for better viewing of enemies coming from behind.
