This clip is from the movie Dames (1934), which was Joan's 34th movie in less than four years. She was several months pregnant when they shot this bit, or Busby Berkeley would have done something sexier with a hundred dancing girls. Anyway, she was so popular, Warner's threw her into everything, including musicals. If you see the original film you'll understand why everyone was so crazy about Joan. Some of us still are. ;-)
Joan Blondell wasn't a singer, but was game enough to do this one. A much better actor than given credit for, she played many kinds of roles in a career that covered decades. The always funny pair of Guy Kibbee and Zasu Pitts open this segment.
The Great Depression was the age of musicals as people needed an escape even if it was for a little while at the cinema where you could see a show for 5 cents.
It’s funny, the Busby Berkeley musical sequences definitely take your mind off of everything and when they’re over it feels like you were in a dream or a trance…
No other actress of that era had more prominent or expressive eyes than Joan Blondell. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out she had those orbs insured by Lloyds of London.
All those folks up on the screen were lucky. They had jobs. Think of how many ppl worked in the studio contributed to the making of this musical number. 😊
She did here. But she was almost always dubbed. Although Berkley got her to speak her lyrics on 2 occasions, "My Forgotten Man" very effectively and "All's Fair in Love and War." Having said that she is obviously putting on a voice here, so not really a vocal performance to judge her by.
That beginning is hilarious!
This was so amazing
This is the first time I (ever) heard Joan Blondell sing, she doesn't have much of a singing voice, but she makes up for it with talent!
Her singing voice is way better than Ruby Keeler's though.

They've sure been doing a good job with preserving/restoring - looks and sounds pristine
Singing laundry - brilliant!
This is basically Disney princess "I Wish" song, but for a laundry girl XD lol cute
Next time that I iron my hubby's clothes I'm gonna SING THIS SONG!!!!
I had no idea that Joan Blondell had such big expressive beautiful eyes. What a charmer she was
Weird but Charming 😆

one of my favourite berkeley routines. from Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it.
That was brilliantly naff in a special way 😊. For some reason I has a 7” single of this song years ago, haven’t heard it for years! ❤😊

I love this.
I noticed the irons used, I have two of them in my garage.....
Beautiful

Approximately 30 employees. Yikes.
❤ *Joan Blondell* ❤ was pregnant while filming this 😁
I read she was 7 months along. I'm finding that hard to believe even if it was her first baby.
Honey Bee86 they put on girldles on her. And her shots was usually until waist only. That's the reason why she has the big apron
Teacher Niña J. Even with that to be 7months gone and look like that is incredible.
@@SpookyElectric319 I've seen a few heavily pregnant women who are stick thin
She was pregnant with my child😉I time travelled last week and she was wonderful😄
When you think Joan Blondell was in the film Grease
does anyone know if she did her own singing?
Try listening to other videos of her. I think she did her own singing.

音楽は素晴らしく、アイロンをかける女性達がとても可愛らしい。
Joan Blondell looks like the Abominable Snowman on Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer.

Not one of Busby's best.
