Muxes - Mexico's third gender

- In Juchitán, Mexico, muxes - children identified as male at birth, but who choose at a young age to be raised as female - are embraced as part of the community.

Being muxe is often confused with being transgender, but it is an identity specific to the Oaxaca region and the indigenous Zapoteca culture. Having a muxe person in the family has come to be seen as good luck and even a blessing. But life outside Juchitán is not always easy.
For the documentary Muxes, the director Shaul Schwarz reconnects with the characters and culture he photographed extensively from 2002-06

Since I'm latin, I can see why mothers would want muxe sons to help with chores at home if they have no daughters.... But that has to change. Why not also teach the sons to do chores? My husband is australian and he helps out with all chores, I can easily leave him at home for weeks and he would be fully capable to take care of our baby and toddler, loves to cook, does laundry, vacuums, mops etc and works as a labourer full time. My sons will also be taught these basic survival skills. Men are very capable, its the culture that needs to change towards equality and leave behind it's outdated machista attitudes.

My father and mother yell at me and my sister to be more feminine and to do stuff around the house while my younger brother sadly watch us and tries to help if he can.
It is true. I sorta had to break my bf and finally after 7 years he can do his own chores lol. His mama babied him while I was cleaning and doing laundry and yard work before 11 years old.
If mothers put as much responsibility on their sons as they do their daughters.
Typically in these cultures young sons, even as young as 10, are sent out to do work so they can bring money into the home. Thus they become part of the financial breadwinning process rather than housework chores process. Women do not have the expectation to provide financially so in order to add value to a home cultures teach women how to home make which is an extremely important skill. The boys aren't just lounging around.
I'm from México and I had a teacher in high school who always taught us about the Muxes and the Two Spirits people in México's culture and it was so interesting and so beautiful 🤗
What does that mean, "two spirits"? Why not just men who feel like women? Can a muxe be a woman who dresses as a man, too?
@@NightinGal89 The idea of 'two spirits' is an ancient one in the Americas that predates European influence. Many cultures across the Americas believed and still believe in 'two spirit' people. A man can never know how it "feels", to be a woman..That is sick and misogynistic....That is very sexist. Woman are not just feelings or costumes
We have a 3rd gender in India, too... they're called "hijras", and it is heartbreaking how they are ostracized and not allowed to participate in life the way everyone else is. They form their own communities, then show up at someone house where a wedding recently took place, or a child has been born, dance, sing, then ask for payment. They are beautiful and intelligent people that deserve to get jobs like everyone else, and not be forced to be in the fringes of society.
I bless those people the best
In Thailand, they're called 'katoy.' I'd venture that Thailand has the highest % of any country.
But why don't you talk about the transgender from from west Indian where they are seen as messenger of gods, about South india where there are temples only for trangenders, and Rath yatras where they have first right to diety

Hello, I'm trying to understand how various cultures regard the gender of trans people. The culture in this video seems to consider trans-women as their own gender of Muxe as opposed to American trans women joining the gender of women. Did you understand this doc in the same way? If not, how did you interpret it. And if you did interpret it the same way, which feels more "true" to you? Thank you for your time.
@@Twoyutes74 Since Gender itself is a social construct, the role it plays differ depending on society.
For example, European societies and the ones they colonized have a more strict interpretation of gender due to conservative evangelical beliefs, in which only men and women exist. Native American societies on the other hand, were more accepting of LGBT, which led to the creation of identities like Muxe, which can be compared to the more modern identities in recent history like non-binary.
About the "true" part, all of our are and should be valid.
Go look at the statistics on who's killing who
Each nation has a different understanding of gender. Trans and non-binary people are everywhere. We’re nothing new or threatening. We’re people.

Seems a lot of commenters here don't realise that self-selected gender goes waaay back. There have always been people who felt more natural living the "opposite" gender role, than their biological appearance indicates. In many traditional tribal societies, people who lived as the other gender were often highly honored as their tribe's shamans (religious specialists, healers, etc.). They were seen as magical, and because they lived, in a way, on a "threshold" of gender, they were seen as also being able to more easily cross the threshold between the mortal and spiritual worlds. Many Native American tribes had a specific word for people with this kind of gender identification, such as "berdache" (look it up). Biological males could live as wives to warriors, doing "women's" work. Biological females could live as hunters and warriors. It's natural to human beings, always has been. Time to get over your mere cultural (religious) biases and accept anthropologically based truth. I'm a heterosexual woman with a degree in anthropology, so don't make any assumptions. My only "agenda" is that I like disseminating actual scientific research and facts. Rare and unpopular though those are, at the moment.

Wow....
Wow! Interesting, informative & undeniably a painful exsistence.
It is ironic that the in the end of this piece she compares being a "MUXE" to a smile, while inside she is crying from the pain she has endured.
Thank you for sharing this & may we all learn to live with love & kindness because it always wins in the end.
Or maybe she is crying because she knows she's doing wrong by the holy spirit. I heard plenty of homosexual say that but they continue to live there life happy on the outside and dying with some kind of guilt and regret on the inside.
TheChristopherBlake1 well said!
I don't know much about muxes but I think they're sometimes restricted from basic rights and expected to be celibate. It's pretty depressing.

No es exclusivo d México .
Es mundial

I'm glad there is somewhere in the world that is more accepting. I liked Mariana; she had a way with words.
Its not that the moms are pushing it,its just that the moms are unconditionally loving and people are just people. You'd be surprised what kind of people you'd meet if everyone was just accepting of one another.

mariana is so gorgeous!!! im curious now, what is the ftm equivalent of muxe in mexico? is there any at all?
Confusion
There aren't many ftm equivalents of indigenous third genders because women/(A)FAB's were/are strictly held within gender norms. Most, if not all women/(A)FAB's can't/couldn't really express themselves in the way that (A)MAB's can. Just another fact of a patriarchal society keeping women and (A)FAB's down 🤷

It’s a trans- male to female. Mujer / muxer
I was trying to figure out the same thing lol 😂
Everything Islove but they didn’t explain for trans women to male :(
Aj M it’s even more taboo THats why. And
Yeah me too... cause in the description it says they should not be confused with trans people but I honestly don't know what the difference is
In Southern Mexico *Muxes* are transgender in India they are called *Hijra* Isn't it fascinating that two totally different groups of people on two different continents that have never exchanged culture, both acknowledge a third gender within their respective areas.
I saw a "Taboo" show on the National Geographic channel about the Indian transgender(not sure of the correct terminology) and I think there was one story on a woman living openly as a man as well.
I appreciate the fact that they don't call themselves women!
I've known about Muxes since I was little, my father is Oaxaqueño and so I've learned everything I could about it. I just feel bad how the fathers are less accepting but eventually come around. I know it seems kinda harsh how the parents (and muxes) say they will never marry and will live with their parents and take care of them to old age. That's not harsh at all, it's almost part of our culture that one of the children will never marry (like me) and will take care of their parents until the day they die.
I've always wondered though, who then takes care of that person when THEY get old?
I took care of my parents until their death
I was going to stay with my mother until she died, since I never dated. I'd been helping her, paying rent and bills and everything, since I was 15, though she was very abusive. However once I was 19 she'd started stealing my money, getting credit cards in my name, and inviting drug addicts over.
I had to leave when I was 20 for my wellbeing as it was such a horrible situation. She never spoke to me after, unless she wanted me to bring her money or booze. She died a few years later, it was terrible and I still miss her. I never even got any photo albums or heirlooms, I have nothing to remember her by except 6 photos and one of her old bracelets. If only she'd treated me better, and not had druggies around, I would have kept supporting her financially, physically & emotionally forever.
It’s usually the middle child. I am the middle child, I took a vow to never marry so I’m the one who will look after my parents when they get too old to take care of themselves.
