Was Game 6 Of The 1985 World Series Rigged???

  • Was Game 6 of the 1985 World Series a fix by Major League Baseball to help the Kansas City Royals win Game 6, and the World Series?
    The Cardinals led the World Series 3-2, needing one more win to become champs.
    In the bottom of the 9th with no outs and no one on base, and the Cardinals leading 1-0, Royals pinch hitter Jorge Orta hits a chopping bouncer to Cardinals first baseman Jack Clark, who tosses it to Cardinals pitcher Todd Worrell covering first base, who tagged the bag ahead of Orta.
    Don Denkinger, Umpire #11, made one of the worse blown calls in Major League Baseball history by calling Orta safe when replays show Orta was out by a half a step.
    The Royals then scored two runs to win the game.
    Don Denkinger went on to be the umpire behind the plate for Game 7 of this World Series where the Royals blew out the Cardinals, 11-0, and became World Series Champions.
    Denkinger has regularly appeared at sports memorabilia shows (including ones in St. Louis) willing to autograph photos depicting this blown call. Denkinger also owns a painting featuring himself, Todd Worrell, and Jorge Orta involved in this play.

    Major League Baseball deserves a lot of blame for what happened after the choke call was made by Denkinger. They never should have allowed him to go behind the plate in game 7. By then he and Herzog absolutely hated each other. And Denkinger was such a coward he decided to rub Herzog's face in it. Baseball is better without the likes of Denkinger and stupid owners.

      Denkinger true to gutless form rationalized his behavior. He would not recognize or admit that his crime against baseball was in game 7 when he allowed his personal bias to determine the outcome of not just a game but the World Series. All umps make mistakes, that's part of the job. But to carry it further and allow a mistake to prejudice yourself against a manager, players, organization and fans was beer league bush. Denkinger was unprofessional and a lousy ump. That should be on his tombstone. ua-cam.com/video/cTfRqnhM4Io/v-deo.html

    Yes, it was rigged. Everyone KNEW that if Denkinger intentionally missed a close call at first, Clark would drop an easy foul ball for an out, Balboni would get a single due to a 3rd baseman playing out of position, and Clark would miss a pitch that got away from him. All these events would lead to 2 runs for KC, both being from runners that weren't the one Denkinger called safe because he was thrown out at third (which he wouldn't have been had he not been called safe in the first place).

  • @danpaul2989
    @danpaul2989 9 років тому +2

    Yea sure, MLB caused Clark and Worrell to botch the play at first, then for Clark to miss Balboni's foul pop up, and also for Porter to commit a passed ball and for the Cardinals to choke in the 9th and only get one out(that on a sacrifice bunt attempt) (1) - Bad calls1st inning - George Brett was called out on a high pitch, with Smith on 3rd and only one out. GB was a great contact hitter and all he had to do was put the ball in play(infield back) for Smith to score. (2) - 4th inning - Frank White is called out at 2nd even though his foot was on the bag when Ozzie Smith tagged him. Pat Sheridan then singles, which would have easily driven in White. So poor calls cost the Royals at least one run and in all likelihood two.

      Stumbling all over the place didn't make the call an easy one.
      Frank White was safe at 2nd on his steal attempt early in the game, but was called out, Pat Sheridan followed with a single to right center. White would have scored easily.
      George Brett was called out on a high pitch with one out in the 1st with a runner on 3rd.
      The Royals overcame some bad calls, the Cardinals did not.
      The Cardinals folded like a cheap tent in game 7

    You know what Instant Replay has come to show in recent years? That these umpires suck overall. The HUGE % of calls that are overturned these days point to the fact that they were never very good overall in calling the close plays correctly.
    This from the Denver Post for 2015:
    "The Denver Post looked at the percentage of calls overturned of the MLB's 99 umpires in 2015. Of the more than 1,300 plays reviewed this year, 643 (49.2%) were overturned."
    Almost half. And the best part of Replay now is that we don't have to endure the umpire's gross arrogance anymore, tossing manager and players out of games, when in reality they should've recused themselves for being wrong half the time!
    DD here was just par for the course. No rigging required, just incompetence.

    • @QuestioningOurReality

      @sdsmt99 Just face it, pro sports is rigged entertainment like WWE. If the call got overturned and the Royals didn't look like they were going to win the World Series, somebody whether an umpire or Cardinals player would make sure a Royals win was the result and we would be debating that rigged result. This would have never had to happen had the Royals been good enough to win the World Series that year but getting a ring for George Brett and Kansas City getting robbed in the 1970s playoffs and in the 1980 World Series, it was their time...the league had to reward them. In the end sports is always rigged. A game operating within a game.
      Look at the Tuck Rule game with the Patriots and Raiders in 2001. The Patriots got robbed in 1976 playoff game against the Raiders (year of Raiders first Super Bowl Win) and it was made up to them with the Tuck Rule Game.

I'm not a fan of any team, but I have enjoyed watching the sport of baseball for a long time. Was Orta out? No question, and that's coming from a diehard Royals fan. Having said that he did end up thrown out at third base first of all so St. Louis fans can stop bitching. Second of all in the same game St. Louis benefited from another blown call in the 4th inning when Frank White was wrongly called out trying to steal second. If he had been called safe as he should have been, Pat Sheridan would have singled him in on the very next pitch. (The next pitch was a single to center field.) So the way I see it Don Denkinger's blown call in that game was nothing more than karma coming back to bite St. Louis in the ass.

There was a wild pitch and a foul pop up that their 1st Baseman or Catcher didn't catch and they still could have won the Series in Game 7 but they got their butts 11-0 and they deserved it. Don Denkinger DID NOT cost the Cardinals the 1985 World Series, the Cardinals cost the Cardinals the 1985 World Series.

      @sixmax11 The umpire or some of them always are aware of the script. In this case the umpire is rigging the result because the Cardinals had a chance to win. I don't think the Cardinal players getting upset have an clue about the script. I'm sure some players were aware though.

    "Don Denkinger, Umpire #11, made one of the worse blown calls in Major League Baseball history"
    That was NOT anywhere close to "one of the worse blown calls in Major League Baseball history"
    Besides being a pretty close play (I know it wasn't bang bang, and YOU would've gotten it right in your sleep), it was not a normal play, pretty hard to even predict who and how the it would end up. Besides the race to the base, in full speed it actually looks like the pitcher might have pulled his foot. Bugs me that in all the slow-motion replays they don't let the footage roll after the ball hits the glove. Honestly I don't think he pulled his foot, but at full speed it looks weird, and that might have been part of what went into Denkinger's split second decision. I do believe he called it way too fast though. One or two seconds of delay is way better than any missed call.
    In the end though, that call was not even close to being responsible for the outcome of the game, let alone the series.
    The only big call I can think of being responsible for an outcome is Jim Joyce's safe call for the last out of Armando Galarraga's perfect game.
    (and BTW, imagine if more people could handle sh*t the way that kid handled that. priceless)

    1985 was a complete fix. The KC Royals benefited from the most corrupt umpiring in history, not just in the WS, the ALCS was also fixed, the umps gave them that series too over the Blue Jays. Some gamblers, with a lot of money, paid a bunch of umpires off so that a truly mediocre team would win against two superior teams; Blue Jays and Cards.

      Hank Murphy Maybe the Cards should've stayed focused and not let a blown call completely unravel them. Maybe not have Clark miss catching a pop up right in front of him, allow a base hit, a passed ball, and another bass hit, and the fact that their all star player couldn't throw out slow ass sunburg to score the winning run, and do I even need to get started on game seven? They lost, get over it and shut the fuck up!

    Clark's toss was off line and caused Worrell to stop, throw all his weight backward, and reach back for the throw; you can see that this caused him to pull his foot off the bag, and if you watch Denkinger, he swipes his arm sideways to indicate that THAT is what he based his GOOD call on. Cardinals and their fans, sorest losers ever, .... just like this year, ... when the Cubs kicked the livin' shit out of 'em ... ;) ...

    This comment section is killing me 🤦‍♂️
    Here’s why the Cardinals weren’t cheated out of a World Series. I’m about to point out some stuff, so strap in.
    1) Orta was obviously out, I’m not denying that, but he was thrown out at third a little bit later in the inning and was the first out of the inning, like he would have been had he actually been called out at first. Now let’s assume he was called out at first for a bit. Both batters after him still get base hits, passed ball occurs, advancing the runners, and Iorg hits the game winning single. Barely anything would have changed except for the fact that he was thrown out at 1st instead of 3rd
    2) St Louis was handed 2 free outs, but botched them both. First, the pop fly foul, and second, the throw to home on the final play of the game. Had the catcher been just a bit further back, that’s an out 100%, and if they got both, it would have sent the game to extra innings, but they didn’t. These were EASY OUTS.
    3) Earlier in game 6, frank white was called out on 2nd base during an attempt to steal, but he was pretty clearly safe. The next batter up got a base hit, which would have scored White easily if the correct call was made. If that had happened, the score would have been 1-1 in the 9th, not 1-0, which means Kansas City still wins in both scenarios (the one that happened and the one I just explained) even if Orta is out.
    4) They led 3-1 and allowed a game 7. Enough said
    5) I’m sure by now a lot of people are thinking that “iT cHaNgEd tHe MoMeNtUm” but that meltdown was completely on the Cardinals. Instead of acting like crybabies when one call didn’t go their way, they should have kept their cool, like the royals did after their blown call, and they might have actually won game 7, or maybe have been able to end it in game 6.
    6) St Louis still had a chance in game 7, but instead of showing up, they let the blown call from game 6 get to their heads and lost 11-0. ELEVEN TO ZERO. That is completely on the Cardinals. They shit the bed in game 7.
    The St Louis Cardinals choked, plain and simple.
    TL,DR: That blown call didn’t cost St Louis the series, their errors in game 6 and lack of showing up in game 7 did.

      The Fix Was In For The Royals. This video clip clearly shows umpire Don Denkinger making the worst call in World Series history. You talk about Game 7, well guess who was behind the plate calling balls and strikes? Don Denkinger. Major League Baseball allowed this after his Game 6 performance. I mean come on man, wake up. This guy coordinated the outcomes of Game 6 and Game 7. This is easy as pie to figure out. Do you know Don Denkinger appeared at sports memorabilia shows signing his name to photos of the Game 6 blown call? What else do you need to understand the 1985 World Series was in you face rigged?

    • @TheNickstar
      @TheNickstar 3 роки тому +1

      @@QuestioningOurReality If you would have actually read my comment, you’d know that I’m not denying that it was a horrible call. He definitely was out, but ONE call going the royals way doesn’t mean it’s rigged. It was an honest mistake by the ump because in real time from his angle it might have been pretty hard to call. Also, you say that the fix was in for the royals but what people tend to ignore or forget about is that earlier in the game there was a more significant blown call AGAINST THE ROYALS. Frank White was called out at 2nd when he was clearly safe. The next batter hit a single which would easily have scored White. So it’s tied 1-1 in the 9th and Don gets the call correct at 1st. The royals still would have gotten at least 1 run from Iorg’s single, so they would have won either way. Another thing is in either game one or two, a runner for the royals, can’t remember the name, was called out at HOME when he was clearly safe. This sounds familiar, huh? Had that call been made correct, the Royals could have won in 5 or 6 games. Still, you can’t blame the Umps for the Cardinals botching 2 free outs that would have won them the series. Not to mention that the Cards had a chance to end it in St Louis and not even go to a game 6, but botched that too. They choked, it’s that simple. Maybe you should actually do some research or watch the rest of the series before jumping on the “hating on Don Denkinger” bandwagon.

    • @QuestioningOurReality

      I've watched the clip of Frank White. That one looked like an honest mistake by the umpire. Not every umpire (or player) is in on the fix. This play in this video is a big deal compared to the other calls by umpires in that 1985 World Series. I point out again umpire Don Denkinger signs photos of his famous blown call. Why is this happening? If this blown call isn't a big deal compared to others then why is Denkinger showing up to sports memorabilia shows to make money off of signed photos of the blown call? It's a tell.
      I don't hate Denkinger. That's you distorting what's going on here. Are you like related to him or what? I've simply pointed out a blown call in the 1985 World Series that altered the outcome of who won the series.
      Baseball is rigged and this is a great example. George Brett got a ring in 1985 because of Denkinger. That's not to say he got robbed in previous playoff runs with the Royals. Still, the way the game is played is not fair and there is an agenda on a yearly basis for a certain team to win and 1985 was supposed to be the Royals year. Sometimes guys like Brett get rewarded for "playing along" and not questioning what is the norm in Major League Baseball. I wouldn't be surprised if the Royals could've been the champs in the late 1970s with all their ALCS appearances but did they get a fair shake against the Yankees or was the fix in for New York to be the champs because with Reggie in '77 and '78? I'm sure the Phillies got help from the umpires in 1980 to beat the Royals in the World Series. It doesn't have to be blatant bad calls for these teams to win. Sometimes players "choke" and go hitless or make a defensive error on purpose or a pitcher tips his pitches. The ways a game is rigged is endless but this video shows a blatant not even trying to hide it example.

    • @TheNickstar
      @TheNickstar 3 роки тому

      @@QuestioningOurReality … how are you going to say that the frank white call was an honest mistake but the Orta call was an obvious example of why it’s rigged? Now you just sound like an angry Cards fan that has resorted to using Denkingers call as a scapegoat. This is hilarious 😂 Also, you cant use him signing photos as an excuse to say the series was rigged. That’s just stupid. St Louis also missed out on 2 free outs that would have ended the series in game 6 and then didn’t bother to show up in game 7. The Cardinals performance in the last 10 innings of the series was embarrassing. That blown call didn’t cost them anything except for *maybe* their momentum, but letting it affect them was their own fault. Instead of letting the call get to their heads and not staying focused, they should have got their act back together and closed it out, which they could have easily done. The royals did it multiple times. They had this one in the bag if they would have just stayed focused, so I’m gonna say it again, the Cardinals choked, simple as that. Quit trying to make excuses.
