This movie is a sequel to Whisper of the Heart. They are their own stories but the Baron and Moota are introduced in the first movie.

When I realized that I was so shocked because I watched Whisper of the Heart, although it was some time ago. It’s a must that I rewatch it at this point!

I even see it as the last movie in a 4 movie set. All stand alone and all different. But based on geography and theme, Totoro, then Pom Poko, then Whisper of the Heart, then The Cat Returns all form a kind of set, going from the life before development of West Tokyo (Totoro) through the actual development (Pom Poko) to life after development (hence "Concrete Roads" in Whisper) to the dreams of someone who lives in West Tokyo (The Cat Returns).

To me this is the fourth movie in a kind of Studio Ghibli set of movies all based in roughly the same part of Japan (now West Tokyo) and all with hints of similar themes. The first is the classic Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) which is a CHARMING children's movie. It is based in roughly the same part of Japan before development, so shows the traditional life. Pop Poko is the second and shows the process of development from the eyes of the Tanuki (racoon like animals in Japan). It is a fun movie and changes animation style depending on mood, from super realistic to super stylized. I should note the animals are quite anatomically correct!
Third is one of my all time favorite movies even though it is not my usual style: Whisper of the Heart. That is based in West Tokyo after development and has echoes of mourning what was paved over. It is a coming of age story and is another very charming movie. It makes me very nostalgic for when I lived in Japan...and it even made love the song Country Roads so much I tear up every time I hear it.
A character in Whisper of the Heart gets inspired to write a story based around a cat statue. That story became the inspiration for The Cat Returns.
They all are stand alone. They are all very different. All were done by different directors at Studio Ghibli. But to me they form a loose set. I even watched them in the order they were made and chronologically occur.
