Mariska's voice and tone in this song is really powerful. She takes a Shocking blue (Robbie) song and makes it hers.

I'm always appreciative of this era in rock and roll as it evolved to the sub genres I listen to today. Black metal and the like. However, with Shocking Blue this is really amazing music. Mariska's voice is unbelievable.

Such a great song - one of the best from Shocking Blue, a very underrated band who are sadly known in the US as a one-hit wonder with their massive hit "Venus". Nothing could be further from the truth as they pumped out album after album full of terrific songs with many versatile styles. Mariska is also a pioneer being one of the first woman fronted rock bands, of which many followed suit including Fleetwood Mac and Blondie.
Yeah , certainly as a European Female ,,PowerHouse,, She was pioneering for sure . Mariska started her own HardRock Band ,,Veres,, in the mid. Eighties. With that She blew away ALL Female Voices here in Europe. You do mention Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks) and Blondie as USA follow ups ...But You allready had Janis Joplin ,Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) and Ann Wilson (Heart) just to name a few.

while travelling on Solex to London (1970), we somehow bumped into this band on 3 occasions within a couple of days, third concert, already friend with Hans bassplayer, Mariska signed my Jacket and kissed me. I was 17. That felt good. In my Hyde park sleep, I dreamed of her! alex === Jefferson Airplane sound, other messages from Robbie van Leeuwen, top musician.

Do you know why the band wasn’t internationally known?! I can’t even find one documentary on them on UA-cam! There’s not a lot of information about Mariska’s personal life on Wikipedia. They just seem like a ghost band which is sad. I want to know more about them. 😣💙

@@laydown6 She was born and grew up in the Netherlands, but with a Hungarian father and a French-Russian mother born in Germany, I doubt she was a Dutch citizen, not with the Dutch citizenship legislation of that time. To further complicate matters, it looks like her parents weren't married.
This is my generation. 1969 from USSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic)
She has a good voice when she shows some range.

Are Mariska and Robbie singing live to backing track in this video or is it lip syncing? Also what tv show are they appearing on in this video ? I'm from Sydney, Australia and Venus was a big hit here as in America in 1969/70 however it was their only hit in Australia, I discovered their back catalogue of other great singles ( such as Never marry a railroad man & Mighty Joe) during my 1st visit to Europe in 1998 and bought a selection of their European 45s and Cds during that trip and and I've been hooked ever since 😎❤️🎸👍

The US already had a blue eyed, brunette heavy contralto in Grace Slick. Guess there wasn't enough "room" in the music industry for another one. Thus S.B. got one American hit: Venus.

Shocking Blue was a great band mariska great singer . You take the female singers today .no comparison horrible .
In the last part of the video you can listen a spanish word: "BRAVO"; Maybe is only my mind, interesting... / En la parte final de la canción se puede escuchar que alguien dice "BRAVO", tal vez es solo mi mente, interesante...
"Bravo" is used in many European languages. I speak Czech, English, Lithuanian and Latvian and it´s used in all these languages. It´s actually borrowed from Italian :-) People use it when they want to say "Well done!"
