This battle had a great impact on us Japanese. I knew that ISP, X-men, and Beat Junkies were on a whole new level. And we all imitated them out of respect and admiration.
This is really hiphop history . Loved those days. I grew up with Cutmaster Swift and Tony Vegas. I remember all the hype when this battle was going on.
Watched the full 2+ hours and it was amazing. Tough to describe just how influential the original VHS video was. 16 years old, fully infatuated with hip hop / rap music and super interested in being a dj for years. I had some dmc battles on tape but this battle, whoa. I worked at McDonald's $4.25 an hour and saved money to buy my first set of turntables. So I could practice and try to be like my heros. The guys in this video. So next level and influential on the dj culture. Much respect. 25 years later I still cut it up but still am not on the level displayed here. So inspiring
No matter how many times I watch this battle, the highlights never fail to coat me with goosebumps. But to hear the nuances and insights of the actual legends therein is priceless. Many thanks and endless props to each of y'all for puttin' it down for the Culture the way y'all have for so many years. This right here is truly #Classic, for real.
one of the Shows you guys talked about was "the night of the turbtalbist" in SF put on by alex, myself and Naut Humon from Asphodel. Beat Junkies were there too. That weekend we did a huge Session with everyone at our ITF Warehouse, it was just us and no crowd and we hung out and had a BBQ and had like 12 Turntables set up and messed around. I don't even think we filmed the warehouse session, but we did have some guy film the event the night before, i got to get at Al for that one.
I was there that weekend. SF Zulu Nation was absolutely in the house. Me of course Daly City was in the house. Peace to Short Kut, Apollo and Mix Master Mike Daly City B-Boys🤟🏽
Anyone remember the Masters Of Beats? Those guy we’re the real pioneers way back in1985 I remember Apollo used to watch them ....The group was Birdy, Smiley and Henry Rivas AKA DJ Masta Hanksta
Thanks for uploading this for the heads that couldn't catch the Twitch. There's some great background in here. I've seen this battle a bunch of times and never spotted that you took Mike's cap.
Thank you so so so much for doing this! All of you legends have shape so much of what has come after. It means a lot to be able to see your guys his thought process that led up to this epic battle. Thank you so so much for doing this watch along for the community. I have no words really for what it means to me to watch this and to be inspired bye both crews.
Rob! You signed my HD videotapes from a show I recorded in PIttsburgh back in the day. I still have them. And I've met you in NYC at the restaurant. Thank you!!!
I grew up learning how to dj from watching vhs tapes and listening to mix tapes of all these legends in the days of 2 turntables a mixer and quality hip hop and funk and electro vinyl that shaped my tastes and helped sharpen my skills !!! Respect from England!!!
This is a beautiful scene of hip hop right here. Two legendary super groups that battled and left an amazing crater sized mark in the DJ elemental side of hip hop... and are all there with one in spirit (Roc Raider) to take us all back in time and share their thoughts. Thanks especially to you Mr. Swift for making this happen.
All legends in the one room respect. Got to respect the work both crews put in over the years to reach the level they reached and still going strong. Still have the VHS. Definitely took turntabilisim to another level
This was really dope of you guys to get together and do this. Thank you guys for all that you've done over the years. As a former dj myself from Chicago, Xmen and ISP, you guys have always been an inspiration and im still a huge fan. This watchalong was definitely entertaining and dope as hell. Legendary moment one of the greatest DJ Battles ever. Thanks for reposting this Rob, I missed the live due to time zones so totally appreciate this. Salute to you all.
What's the mainstream equivalent of an event like this? Like, how well do DJ's who were born in the 00's understand how monumental this moment was? I got one of those goddamn bootlegs from Soundwaves in Houston TX and I thought I had hit the jackpot. This thing was unreal.
Yo, they mentioned DJ Honda, now that's RESPECT. TRUE BATTLES FROM THE DAY. NEW MUSIC SEMINAR, DMC'S, ITF, TO NAME A FEW. BRING BACK THE TRUE FLAVOR OF THE BATTLES, NO BUTTON PUSHING BACKSPINS. PEEP THE CLASSIC BATTLE MIXERS IN THE BACKGROUND. TRUE LEGENDS, ALWAYS READY FOR BATTLE !
These guys I looked up to in the 90s. Begging my parents for a pair of 1200 MK2s was a nightmare but I eventually got them in 1999 😎👌🏽 and still have them in 2024 practically mint with my Vestax pmc 05 💯
I still have my worn out, decades-old vhs of this amazing battle… and I’m still dying to know what break record MMM drops at 1:45:23 - does anybody know?
