Every time she sings, "here's the spot where you died"... chills.
+Emily Davancens Agreed! I like how the lyrics shift from "here's the spot where HE died" in the first chorus to "You" in the second one...that moving from "he to "you"...as well as the shift from "I can draw a circle, his whole life fits inside" to "YOU lived YOUR life inside"...the movement from narrative detachment to a daughter's mourning/remembrance is amazing.
Make this part look rugged
mm mm
Allegheny Plateau
This dark shaded stripe-bum bum bum- is the front
Paint the long ridges and valleys below
mm mm
our town... is this dot
Quick dashes mark the property ends
Beech Creek, a rope that turns and bends
Little squares for houses strung along roads
The land transfigured into topographic codes
Maps show you what is simple and true
Try laying out a bird’s eye view
Not what he told you, just what you see
What do you know that’s not your dad’s mythology?
Dad was born on this farm Here’s our house
Here’s the spot where he died I can draw a circle
His whole life fits inside
Four miles from our door
I-80 ran from shore to shore
On its way from the Castro to Christopher Street
The road not taken
Just four miles from our door
You were born on this farm
Here’s our house
Here’s the spot where you died
I can draw a circle
I can draw a circle
You lived your life inside
Honestly every time I hear the line I could dry a circle is whole life fits inside I get chills. It really highlights the tragedy of Bruce Bechdel's life he was a intelligent man who wanted to see the world and do a lot more than he ended up doing that because of family responsibilities and expectations of the time he ended up in a Loveless marriage trying to hide his sexuality and taking out his anger over that on his family and dying in the same small town he was born in. Alison Bechdel has talked about how different her and her father is lives, she got to live many different places and have a life where she was open about her sexuality her dad doesn't and ultimately it may have killed him.
That might've been why he joined the Army - he wanted to live his dream, but was ultimately held back by reality. He was in Germany in the 50s, but aside from that, he couldn't explore the world like he wanted - he still had to live the "straight" life that was expected of military men of the time
This is my favorite song from the play. Very pondering and introspective, with underlying poignancy
This show is breathtaking
YESS!
There are some songs that are arguably better, but this is my favorite song from Fun Home.
Just met the cast. These people are so genuine and a lot of fun.
OMG really? The person playing the rabbi and the understudy for tevye in fiddler on the roof at the moment is a family friend.
“on its way from the Castro to Christopher Street” makes me cry the hardest in this song for some reason
i know, its that he was so close to finding a place to live truly and he just, missed it, or didnt have the courage to reach out to.
I love this song
This musical made me cry so hard.
I don’t wanna stay there.
It’s time to leave... I gotta leave the circle
DO IT!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Saw this last year and loved it
I love Beth Malone.
God, she’s adorable TuT
What's the context of this song/which character(s) are singing?
This is Oldest Alison just after remembering the scene where Young Alison tried to show her cartoon to her father but he hated it.
