Morning John..Congrats on the new grill/smoker combo. Looking forward to new videos featuring this. The sickness is upon us, this BBQ fetish we have! LOL
In my opinion, Pit Boss did a great job with this one. The burn pot is a bit larger also so it burns more pellets at a time, increasing the smoke flavor. I’ve never had to use a tube to get smoke flavor on the Savannah unless I’m doing a super quick smoke.
If your Onyx is the Savannah, it should have a “L” setting. If it’s one of the other onyx models (Copperhead, Austin, etc.) 180 may be the same as low. Check your user manual for specifics. Thanks!
How dirty and how hard is it to clean the drip tray, I normally put some foil over the tray but with the sear grate and lever it looks like you can't cover it in foil.
Just got one myself. Does anyone know where to find a properly fitting cover for this bad boy. Walmart didnt seem to have one stocked thats made for it
Just spotted one at Walmart and grabbed it with a little extra tax money I had. Super excited to put it together do the initial burn off and cook on it this weekend. So my biggest question about it is the space. Are the upper 2 racks big enough for a brisket or pork butt and some ribs. Was hampered on space on my last pellet smoker and wanted to cook certain things on the upper rack like brisket
The top rack is pretty narrow so I probably wouldn’t use that for a brisket or butt. But ribs for sure. The middle rack is plenty big but you’ll have trouble reaching things in the back if you have all 3 racks in. Hope that helps and enjoy this beast of a cooker!
@@HolySmokesBBQ Yeah that helps a lot because if I'm smoking a brisket will probably just be doing some ribs or something on the bottom rack but not using the 3rd. Might smoke me up some chicken this weekend since they are on sale around here
What a pain to put together huh the legs were easy but the arch sheet metal that goes between the legs sucked nothing lined up so I had to loosen up the screws to the legs in order to get everything lined up then I was able to put it all together
I still love it. It’s my primary pellet grill these days. I’ve learned it needs to be cleaned fairly regularly (just getting the ash out) or it’ll mess with the heat distribution. But that’s about the only really specific thing!
You definitely could, but for this cook I didn’t want the embers from the flame falling into the pan. But yes, you absolutely could. Great thought and thanks for watching!
sub 8 min to 250 degrees and sub 16 min to 350 degrees, It really is a great grill so far. If it had Wifi it would be top seller of any pellet grill, that is probably why it doesn't or Lowes and Academy would have difficult time selling the pro's and comp's
Anyone else getting ashes thrown everywhere? I always clean out the ash tray before I start and have tried multiple brands of pellets still the same result.
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for (how to initially start the smoker)
Glad I could help!
@@HolySmokesBBQ haha thanks. enjoyed the hanging steak but now onto brisket 101... Class is in session
Is this one able to be updated with the new WiFi PID controller ?
I’m actually not sure but I think so, provided it fits the enclosure.

🤣🤣🤣 absolutely - it’s a great sickness to have!
How's the smoke flavor with this pellet grill? I currently have the Laredo 1000 and have to use a smoke tube to get that smoke flavor. TIA

Nice grill, on the initial burn off, do you not spray with Pam oil to season the grill or is that not required.
Nope - the grates come pre-seasoned. Good question!
Great video, but if that's 2 lbs of shrimp you must me that guy who says he has 8 inches! Lmao
😂😂😂
Congrats on the new smoker
Thanks!
Quick question. About how many briskets could this hold?
If you use all 3 racks, and use full packer briskets, you could probably fit 5. For just flats, I’d say at least 12.
How do you get to the low or smoke mode my onyx only goes to 180

It’s not hard if you do it regularly. Just don’t wanna let it sit too long between cleanings.
That's so good looking.
Thanks!!

The Pitt Boss onyx edition Austin XL fits the Savannah. Hope this helps
I actually got mine at WalMart.
Dope imma try
You should!

@@Smodlee yeah it was quite a beast to assemble. Glad I don't have to do it again!
Any updates or thoughts on this smoker?
It’s become my new go-to! I almost exclusively use it. Still gets to temp quickly and burns very efficiently.
@@HolySmokesBBQ Awesome. I ordered one. I hope I enjoy it as much as you do.
Debating between this one and the Austin XL. Don’t need all that space but otherwise they look identical
Over a year after this video. What are your honest thoughts on the Savannah?

Just bought one. Really happy so far
Wouaw 👏👏
Thanks!
Are you bottom grill grates loose? Mine move am inch
Mine aren’t - it could be an issue of the bolts on the actual base assembly not being aligned.
@@HolySmokesBBQ you’d think if that was the case one side would be tight while the other sides loose
Why wouldn't you open up the sear area to get that cast-iron up to temp faster?
You definitely could, but for this cook I didn’t want the embers from the flame falling into the pan. But yes, you absolutely could. Great thought and thanks for watching!
@HolySmokesBBQ My smoker gave out recently. Time to get a new one. You have owned this smoker for a bit now. Is it worth buying? Pros or cons?
Some of the pit boss models take a really long time to heat. How long did this take to get to the 355 temp?
I was actually stunned with how quickly it heats up. At least half the time of any other pit boss I’ve had.

As weird as it may sound, maybe don’t clean out the tray prior to every cook. It’s known to blow some ash around if the ash pot is completely empty.
Um. My mouth is watering bro. Cut it out
Haha thanks!!!!!
Not enough info in the video about the smoker.
Happy to answer any other questions you have!
Is it a PID controller and does it have wifi.
@@freddixon2902 yes it’s a PID but it does not have WiFi.
