    I live here in Ukraine. I work during the day and help out in my city’s humanitarian center at night. The atrocities that are happening infuriated me to such a point where I almost volunteered to go fight, and I’m conflicted as a Christian. But then I calmed down remembered that I’ll be leaving behind my pregnant wife with my firstborn child, and I’ll probably be more of a nuisance than actually helping. It just pains me knowing that this is all happening while I’m writing this comment. God is with us!

    Something that's just as damning and truly paints this war as black & white is an article that was recently written by RIA Novosti, one of Russia's largest state-run news agencies. They're also the same agency that posted then redacted a pre-emptive puff piece that celebrated Ukraine's quick downfall and the birth of Russia's "New World Order." The new article in question was titled *"What Russia Should Do with Ukraine"* and it's an absolutely horrific read that more or less calls for genocide of Ukraine. I highly recommend reading it to know what 20th Century evil looks like in the 21st, but if you want the highlights, the article pretty much says:
    - The idea that _"the Ukrainian government are Nazi's but the people are good"_ is now proven inherently false by Russian "liberators" meeting stiff populace resistence which confirms that all Ukrainians are in fact a new, more dangerous breed of Nazi's far worse than Hitler's Third Reich. As such, any Ukrainian who picks up a gun, provides non-combat support, even passively endorses their efforts is unquestionably a Nazi thus deserves to be liquidated as such.
    - De-Nazification isn't enough, Ukraine must thoroughly be _"De-Europeanized."_ Mass re-education and censorship must be inflicted upon the populace for a minimum of a generation (25 Years) to be remotely effective.
    - Ukraine must not be allowed to rebuild at all, especially not in comparison to the Marshall Plan (or even Comecon). No, the civilians simply must fester in their post-war squalor in order to absorb the horrors of war and atone for their guilt, acts committed against Russia and Russian speaking peoples, in order to build sole dependency towards the Kremlin.
    - The concept of Ukrainian statehood is a farce created by the west after the fall of the Soviet Union and because the likes of Bandera existed, it can be concluded that the people will always crave and gravitate towards Nazism if not properly controlled. Thus Ukraine as Ukraine must not be allowed to exist in any form and the newly founded People's Republics that are formed from its ashes must solely by built as military police-states that are managed and supplied by the proper Russian authorities.

      Ironic that, no matter which way this war goes, Ukraine has effectively been born. Russia has, with its sloppy and clumsy invasion, created a state that they shrilly proclaim has no right to exist. Ukraine is being forged in war, in opposition to invaders, not liberators. Any goodwill Russia pretends still exists is gone, having gone up in smoke with the Russo-phones' homes and businesses.

    one of the Polish retired officers put it very precisely: "Russian army is immoral by definition". That is, russians shouldn't be ORDERED to commit war crimes, their military command simply takes these crimes for granted and let them happen. The morality rules that we follow just don't work in the russian society. Moscow done this already, check the Red Terror, Holodomor, Executed Renaissance, etc., and that's just a few, just during the last century, just in Ukraine... Wherever russians go, the crimes (often based on ethnicity) always follow.

      I lived in Russia for a decade. These people are ripe for anthropological research, almost want to say ethological. By and large Russians live in overwhelming poverty, worse than Africa in many, many places. Their old rummage through trash for food every other day, you can see that plenty on UA-cam with younger people filming them and making fun of them. It's like a society from another century somehow got access to modern tech. They resent living like they do very much, and yet they don't hate the ones that put them in such conditions, on that front they're somehow content. They hate everyone who lives better than them, they're convinced as if it's everyone around them that stole decent living from them. They're elated when those better off are getting murdered, raped and tortured - somehow in their mind, they "deserved it".
      Even their most educated and liberal are like that. To a lesser extent than the rest, but still much, much more than your average western neo-nazi.

    A side issue (perhaps). Ukraine was a divided nation pre-2014. The east was much more pro-Russian than the west.
    I have often seen it claimed that those in the Donbas and elsewhere who were previously pro-Russian have had their eyes opened by the brutality of the Russian attack, and that this will strengthen the Ukrainian nation. Has anyone a sense as to the extent that pro-Russianism is on the wane inside Ukraine? This seems a vital factor for the future.

If all of a sudden, in said impossible scenario, Irish forces started bombing my home and killing my family & friends, despite my heritage being known, I'd be a lot less inclined in wanting to have anything to do with them anymore. I wish I could say that I was surprised by the Russian military's commission of war crimes, but I'm not. Horrified, yes. What I see is a military that for all intents and purposes is still operating on the same doctrine and mentality that existed in WW II, and the only thing really different about them is the weapons and equipment. Poor or non-existent leadership at the platoon and company level, a lack of training in the "rules of war," as well as just plain overall training.
    Regarding giving the Ukrainians the F-16 or the F-15, the problem is not just pilot training (even a crash course is over a month), it's all the things that have to go with the planes. Training the mechanics, the spare parts, and so on. It's better to have them get the planes they already know how to fly and maintain (apparently Bulgaria is getting ready to transfer their planes to Ukraine), and ship them better air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions.

    As someone on the political right I'm absolutely appalled by the conduct of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine. Attacks targeting civilians have been thoroughly disproven as an effective means of breaking the will of an enemy to resist. If anything it hardened their resolve. People surveyed in Britain, Germany, and Japan who were subjected to strategic bombing campaigns targeting cities all reported that bombings were viewed similarly to the weather. A strong desire for revenge was more prevalent than any notion of giving up. There is no valid argument for targeting civilians, this is ethnic cleansing and raw conquest. Russian soldiers will likely find it difficult to expect any mercy from the Ukrainians, and I would not blame the Ukrainians if they gave none. I believe that the MIGs and missiles should be given without fanfare. F-16s would be a bridge to far in my opinion. Russia has lost any chance of reconciling with the West for this action, a new iron curtain descends.

    • @Trelmayas21
      @Trelmayas21 2 роки тому +10

      Why would F-16s be a bridge too far? The F-16 entered service over 40 years ago. My understanding is that while still serviceable, the F-16 is nowhere near cutting edge, and while most of it's specs are classified, aren't exactly a mystery to those with enough motivation. I could be wrong, and am open to correction.
      The bigger issue would be the training time. Soviet aircraft that the Ukrainian pilots are more familiar with would obviously be more helpful. I'm just curious as to what the argument would be for F-16's being a bridge too far.

    • @generalrendar7290
      @generalrendar7290 2 роки тому +13

      @Trelmayas21 because they would need training by NATO pilots and they are recognizably American Jets. This could lead to the Russian government believing that American pilots are actually flying and striking the Russian army and escalating the war. The biggest issue is the training that would have to take place, the Ukrainian pilots would not be effective in time to make a difference in this conflict. The polish migs can be repainted, and have somewhat plausible deniability. Not to mention the fact that they are systems that the Ukrainians are familiar with.

    As a historian I am surprised at your surprise regarding Russian war crimes. The Russians have a reputation to live up to, and they are living up to it nicely. Why would you think that they had gained any humanity in wartime since the Winter War 1939? Their entire performance during WWII, including their treatment of Poland, not to mention their treatment of Americans and their own people are a litany of barbarity. There was a reason why surrendering German troops fought hard to surrender to the western allies rather than to the Russians. But the barbarity continued with the partitioning of East Germany, the managing of the Hungarian revolt, and the Russian taking of eastern bloc nations. When have the Russians EVER displayed any humanity?

    Excellent, and powerful stuff - thank you. I am nearly 70, and grew up in a world still deeply marked by WW2, but I also grew up in a world where nothing like that could ever happen again. I don't have the words to express my horror of what is now happening in Ukraine - part of me simply can't believe it, part of me can't take in the horror of it. On a purely personal level, it feels like my life has been a waste - all that stuff I believed for so many decades destroyed and invalidated by one insane man. Putin simply cannot be allowed to win this, he must be defeated - otherwise, where does this end. We didn't manage what we had thought we'd done after WW2 - to prevent war ever happening again in Europe - but this time, we MUST do that. The only positive outcome of this nightmare is that we ensure that we it can never happen again.
    As for the 'R' word, which I can't even use here for fear that it will cause your channel problems - it is utterly absurd that evil people are free to use this to destroy, torture and oppress, and yet ordinary citizens of free countries can't even say it or write about it. Utter madness. As you point out with your Orwell quotes, with evil such as this, if you don't openly oppose it, you are effectively facilitating it. For analysts you guys missed something important and fundamental. The power of nationalism. If they were going to last a day they were going to win this war, because the will to fight does not wane from war, it grows. Ukraine would at worst turn out like Afghanistan, and at best like Vietnam, Finland, or the 13 colonies. When rifles were handed out to civilians, it should have been clear that this would not simply be a symmetric war clashing in a field, but an urban slogfest that unlike the battles for Berlin, Leningrad, and Stalingrad, had well equipped defenders with high morale food and the will to live. Berlin took nearly a million men to actually take, and to think Kyiv would take any less _in the first month of the conflict_ was absurd.
    Either Ukraine would capitulate at the fall of Hostomel or they would not stop till the city was leveled. To a libertarian like me, the signs of this were clear back in late January. The primary way I was wrong was in presuming I couldn't have been smarter than generals and strategists - surely the Russians knew this and their invasion was a bluff. I constantly said 'they've taken too long, given too much time. The Ukrainians have hardened their critical points and they've had time to entrench, it'd be foolish to invade now' - and a week later the border checkpoint at Crimea was attacked. Ultimately, between the sustainability of civilian logistics and the unsustainability of the Russian logistics, the equation already necessitated a stratagem for Russia to win, even before lend lease was kicking off (btw the US senate just unanimously voted to renew the 1940 lend lease act with some amendments to make it suit Ukraine - the house should pass it within 2 weeks).
    Ultimately, I'm wrong about a lot of things but I think I understand the nature of militias. The nature of armed nationalists... The only path to success for Russia now necessitates Genocide, which will pull the liberal democracies of the world into direct conflict with Russia.

      I agree with you. But one distinction. My assumption was the competence of the Russian military. Since their operations in Syria. The extensive reforms of the Russian military undergone since 2008. And their extra budget allocation in the past decade. That they would at least be able to put their combat power in the field and execute their operations.
      They have shown themselves to be under funded. Under equipped. Under trained. Their logistics non existent. Their comms a joke. The reason why professionals. Let alone historians like me got blind sided is we at least expected the Russians to do their job. But they failed at even the basics.

    • @DSiren
      @DSiren 2 роки тому +3

      @@AnimarchyHistory Even if they did their job right they couldn't hope to occupy Ukraine, and any puppet would get EuroMaidan'd. Similar to how Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said that invading the United States would be impossible due to there being a rifle behind every blade of grass, any sufficiently nationalist populace with contempt could carry a molotov, take a sledge hammer to a railway, or otherwise stop this invasion.
      Ultimately, I had a delusion that invasions of other countries wouldn't happen because I thought people had finally figured out the potency of the militia. I was wrong. We're a bit away from the universal recognition of Libertarian farmers as the last and most steadfast line of defense for a nation.

    Everyone here living in a NATO country and (usually) freely elected his representative should bother their offices with calls, mails and on social media to petition their goverment to make haste on the war effort. Especially if the government is lacking in initiative in your country.
    You can do this essentially for free. Show them what their electorate thinks, that we have an opinion.
    Poland essentially wanted to give away the migs yet got called back out of concerns. Everyone knows being over-considerate, passive and appeasing is only encouraging bad behaviour from men like Putin. In short, appeasement policy makes you more unsafe.
