Hello, I live in the woods , we (me and my partner and 3 cats) live so so simple, we colect rain water, we have small garden with vegetables and fruits, I wash by hand my laundry, I make my own laundry detergent , my deo creme, my dish detergent, I composted everything , I have composted bucket toilet etc etc. Your videos are so beautiful , thank you
I really envy you for that. I would be well up for the composting toilet system but the hubs will not hear of it in a normal living scenario but we do have one for our cabin so it is there if the time becomes necessary. I have a great “humanure” book ready too just in case. I do however use my urine in the garden in the warmer months as it really does wonders for the plants. Geraniums love it. Dilute 1:10 urine to rain water. I also use a personal cloth system. We can all do a bit of something to help the planet. Better now than to end up being forced to all at once 😉
Are you planning to film a house tour? I would love to see it, i adore your style, so vintage, clean, minimal and cottage like 😊 please say you do??? 😘
Great video! I cut up some very loved reusable nappies (elastic had gone floppy so they couldn't be passed on to someone else) to use as reusable makeup remover pads. They work great. :)
Niamh, I always love your tips. Your recipe for zero waste air freshener and the hanging ceramic stone. Regular air fresheners are toxic and aggravate my asthma so it’s great to have a natural solution to fusty odours. Love the apothecary chic you have going on too 😂 I’m a sucker for amber bottles. 💚
ah my amber bottle friend. Aren't they just too pretty. Im a sucker when I see one in a charity shop! haha although only one of these is second hand. yeah toxic smells are the worst. Have you seen the Netflix movie 'Stink' it goes into that industry of smell and toxic fumes...
I'm Irish but I live in the USA now, in Louisiana. Its like a jungle and things grow easily here. I have citrus trees and we save the peels and dry them. Ground up and used as a freshener for all sorts or a scouring powder. Or cut the whole orange in slices and dehydrate we use them in cakes and water in the months with no citrus. I also steep the peels in vinegar and use it for all sorts of cleaning. The only other cleaners I use are Castille soap or sal suds by Dr Bronners.
Thanks for this bathroom video! It has, as well as your many others, encouraged me to rethink many of the ways I keep my house and my body, as well as family, too. Excited to try many of the suggestions. I use a vinegar and essential oil cleaner from my large local grocer, and it seems to work decently well and scent is light, not offensive. Could likely then make my own.
Have been checking out your videos for a few days now. Have been on a minimalism journey and trying to live more sustainably/responsibly, for over a year. So I'm often looking for green solutions. Thank you for sharing your insights and ideas. They are very helpful. I love your DIYs! And you and your home are both so lovely! I appreciate that in one of your videos, you suggest repurposing/reusing plastic containers till one can, rather than tossing them all out for recycling. It can be tempting to buy new sets of aesthetically pleasing eco-friendly jars and bottles, but beats the whole purpose. So I'm glad that you addressed this point. Just got soap-nuts. Excited to try them out! Thanks once again, Niamh! :)
Chitra M ah brilliant to hear. I'm really delighted you like the videos and appreciate the learning and tips. Enjoy the soap nuts and let me know how you get on!
It's so easy to adapt if you start small. One of the things I want to do is get a list from my local recycling place to find out what all we can recycle. We've already switched to bamboo toothbrushes for our family of six. They go right into our compost bin that is in our garden. We started by getting the reusable grocery bags. Then switch toothbrushes and we're still going.
Okay how are you not more popular. Your videos are amazing thank you for the great tips! For bathroom products for others that don't wish to make it Bite toothpaste bits are actually really great. Love your videos!
Every Sunday afternoon now I sit down and look forward to watching your next video. I have just started out on my zero waste journey and I am truly enjoying the experience so far. Thankyou for your inspiration ❤️🙏
Natural brushes are amazing. 20 years ago I bought a face exfoliation brush on a farmers' market, and it hasn't lost a single bristle since. Best-investes 8 Deutschmarks I ever spent.
My issue is that we have damp and mould in our house. So anything wood or natural in the bathroom gets covered in mould in a few weeks. However, will take this on board for when we move.
I make my own body butter and made my own room/linen spray today. I have been slowly switching over to all wood and glass cleaning products. Wild Minamilist is the name of one of the companies I buy from.
Just discovered your channel and your personality is just as lovely as your beautiful home. I love the simplicity in your presentation and useful information. Thank you!

I am just getting started into the world of home apothecary to avoid the saturation of chemicals in our life. We switched to natural home recipes for body and home cleaning many years ago after a friend of ours became seriously and chronically ill from using chemical based cleaning products in her housekeeping business. It was awful watching her go through the agony caused by these chemicals. She was in and out of hospitals constantly. Our society is literally being bathed in chemicals. Home made safe and natural is the way to go for our health and a healthier planet. Good info here.
Just recently discovered your videos. Your home is beautiful, this video has given me some great ideas of zero waste gifts I can get people too, for example the ceramic air freshener and oils.
yay! Thanks Niamh for making this video. Lots of great ideas. I am still working my way through zero wasting as much of my home as possible so your videos are always inspiring as well as relaxing :) I had done away with bottled shampoo and conditioner for 3 years, using only a shampoo bar but after some time, i found my hair has a lot of breakage around the roots and appears dull. i will definitely check out your vid/link on shampoo & conditioner. thanks again sweetie!
Joy Meows you are so welcome. Delighted you like the video. Yeah I have a friend who stopped with shampoo bars because of the condition of their hair too! I am using shikakai powder at the moment. I have found it brilliant. You can use as a hair mask. It really conditions your hair!
@@FairylandCottage thank you much for taking the time to answer my comments, im sure your busy being a nurse and all, so i just wanted to let you know its appreciated. :) Have a beautiful day dear heart!

You are truly inspirational as I am slowly transitioning into a Zero Waste lifestyle. I live with my Grandparents currently and cannot change the way they do things. However, I want to do this so I am watching everything I can on how to do things to be able to minimize waste for myself. I just bought some Mason Jars and have been reusing jars from like broths and anything my Grandparents buy that comes in a jar. However, they still buy bulk almost everything from Costco and anywhere else that comes in plastic and Grocery bags galore. Sorry I am rambling. Anyway. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! :3

Also take it slowly as it takes a while to weed out all the wasteful habits. Your grandparents are lucky to have you living with them. We can never change others. My other half still likes some plastic stuff but that's ok. Let me know how you get on over the following months. x
Hi Niamh! I was wondering about your amber droplet bottle and your Argan Oil. I currently buy argan oil but it comes in plastic containers. I would love to keep my products in glass bottles, but can I purchase them somewhere that doesnt package them in plastic? Id hate to put that plastic out to waste just to transfer it to a glass bottle later. Thanks!
Hi! I’ve been trying to find something to replace my bath poof/loofah. Where did you find that sponge for your body wash? What do you do to keep it clean? Thanks!
Thank you for this. I've lost my way a bit with making my own products so it's good to have some fresh inspiration and all the links in one place! I've been wondering where I could get packaging free toilet paper too, so I appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
I tried a water flosser ( a very good highly recommended brand) for the zero waste benefits but found it messy, time consuming and ineffective. Luckily I borrowed one from a friend who had also tried it and found it lacking. I reverted to floss, but I use a biodegradable floss that comes in a glass dispenser and I simply buy a refill, which comes wrapped in paper and packaged in cardboard of course! I also use a recyclable toothbrush head on my electric toothbrush because I already have it and my plastic toothbrush is an ingenious design that is already made utilising recycled plastic. You retain the handle forever and replace just the little head with the bristles. If I ever have to replace that handle then I will definitely go bamboo!
I had to open a new window to youtube this. I had no idea! I watched Rycelonia's video...she shows using liquid hand soap...but for females, is there a certain kind of soap recommended? I was always told too harsh of soaps applied directly on the vagina can cause uti's & yeast infections?....sorry if this is tmi? I just think us girls have to stick together & knowledge is power so we should help each other. It's amazing how little we really know about the ways of life in other countries :)
Tracy Tuason ah the dropper comes with the oil. I buy rose hip seed, jojoba, argan and evening primrose oil. The spray on bottle is from Kuishi Home. I linked them in the description box. They are a lovely company. X
🖐 .. hi Niamh. Thanks for all you give us 💋 Can you tell me what material you use for for your little cleansing wipes. I HAVE found a cotton, biodegradable, cruelty free cleansing wipe but l still think l would prefer to use cloths and some cleanser. And can l ask what cleanser l could try too.
ah I just used a cotton blanket I had... I use oil for make up removal and my face powder for cleanser...dm me on insta and I can send you links to those videos...
@@FairylandCottage Ah...thanks Niamh. I truly appreciate you getting back to me (💋 for your cheek) As it happens on the day just before your reply, l came across your video where you made your little cotton cleansing wipes 🙄 and your almond and rose water cleanser. Can ya believe that. I must be blind as a bat..lol !! It's wonderful 💚 and l'll definitely give it a try. God's peace be with you and yours dear girl 🖐
I'm just totally in love with your channel n trying to follow your tips as well. And as per your recommendation I just bought bamboo toothbrush today. Yayyy!
A question? I am not judging just asking a question. The water flossed is made of plastic and uses harmful batteries. How much regular floss is really used and is it made harmful than a flosser
Lizzie Dean Makes thanks Lizzie! They are great. I haven't looked back since I started. I love it. Just use in the shower once a day. My gums have stopped bleeding since I started....
For the water flosser I have one too it’s by water pick and I love it but it’s say to replace the plastic tips every 6 months. Do you do that and how do you recycle them? There’s this vegan bamboo floss on amazon that I want to try too which is exciting that there’s finally a vegan one🥳🧚🏼♂️🧚🏼♀️
pineapple365 it doesn't say on mine to change tips. Just steep in some vinegar every few months and should be fine. If you do want to change then they would be landfill maybe. Yeah it's great some vegan floss for you to try! X
Fairyland Cottage I think they say to change the tips so they can make money. But I wont send it to the landfill since it’s not necessary. I’m curious to know what brand is your water flosser? So I can recommend to friends, I want to support a company like that 🙂🧚🏼♂️
o gosh I just got what I could afford on Amazon. I have only tried the one brand. Hangsun. It is simple and I can use in the shower because its compact. Some come with a huge water container. This was the most simple we could find and also a good enough brand that it would last a long time. It is also rechargeable.
I have some doubts about... whether the custom checking in airport allow our self-made body wash powder? If not means it become difficult during the airway travel...
I just bought a 'water system', otherwise known as a bidet to cut down on toilet paper use. I bought one at Tushy, it was $65 (US) and only took 10-15 minutes and a screwdriver to install. I love it and highly recommend it - and no, I don't receive any kickbacks from the company.
Thank you for sharing your great tips. What is your recipe for your dry shampoo please. I started to make my own soap a few years ago.. Super simple... crock pot 3 ingredients ,,plus essential oils if you wish. :) Searching for clean products is difficult at times... many deceptions on labels :( Thank you again 💖
It is trickier. I got my blusher, mascara and lipstick from a local maker. The foundation and powder is from Couleur Caramel. It’s in glass and vegan and cruelty free
Angelica LeBouquet I just got a generic one online. It's Huawei brand. I got for about €25 online on amazon but I just typed in waterflosser and found the best deal. It's cordless and only needs a little water each time so easy to store in shower (some are huge)
As always I love your videos! We are pretty much on the same page in terms of bathroom waste but I will definitely steal the idea of the ceramic disk hanging from the window with the essentials oils. Such a lovely touch :) Also, your house is very old, right? Do you have any mould issue in the bathroom? If yes, would you still use vinegar on the walls to remove it?
Ah thanks! Yes the house is 300 yrs old so the bathroom gets tiny bit of mould if we don't keep the window open! I use the vinegar spray on it though if it pops up
@@FairylandCottage I have tried tapioca starch and cornflour. My problem is my hair is so dark, cacao didn't work, I might try carob or cocoa. I have been using chickpea flour as shampoo too and I love it so thanks for that. I had tried lots of other nopoo recipes and they all wrecked my hair but this was amazing right from the first wash!
haha yes me too with chickpea flour from the first wash.. hooked! I have never tried tapioca. Try carob powder as that is much darker. let me know how that goes...
Hi! I am really interested in a recipe for an air freshener (spray). I hate knowing I breathe in chemicals whenever I use them. What type of alcohol do you use? Thanks in advance from Scandinavia 💕
loveeeverlasting ah the video link is in the description for the room freshener. I use vodka. I can get in glass and it is odorless. To that you can add essential oils of your choice and it is so nice! You can add water to the alcohol if you want it cheaper.
If I had it to do over again, I would put bidets in all 3 bathrooms in the house we built 18 years ago. I've considered the considered the convenience of it many times over the years.
Can i give you one advies, don't store your natural sponge in the bathroom. It's the perfect environment for germs. Clean your sponge very often en let it dry in a dry area, don't dry it using central heating or a blowdryer etc. Just hang it somewhere. About your diy gel which i suppose is made of flexseed or other natural ingrediënts, you keep it fresh longer storing it in the fridge. That being said, you are an inspiration! 🌹
I’ve been checking into zero waste but in California the difficulty is finding a place that refills products. Many good stores (Whole Foods)that sell but where to go to just refill is another story. 🙁 I like the ceramic disc idea. I usually use orange peels but that doesn’t last long.
Ah orange peel is nice... I thought California had more zero waste shops... Eco Goddess on Instagram lives in California and she might be able to help you...
mould can form on wood from lack of ventilation and therefore too much condensation. I always have the window slightly open in the kitchen and bathroom and the wooden products can dry properly. Saying that, my bamboo toothbrushes always turn black cause I have them in a container but I don't mind. Bamboo is naturally anti bacterial so it just looks strange but isn't harmful.
After I use my wood scrubbing brush or bamboo toothbrush I give it a good shake, then a quick dry with a towel - not 100% dry, but it gets most of the excess water off. It really seems to help (I didn’t do this in the past and they got yucky pretty quickly). Also, if there’s a bit of sun around I try and put the brushes in direct sunlight for an hour or so, every now and then 🙂. Hope that helps
I use bar shampoo and bar soap instead of body wash, so no plastic bottles. My vinegar comes in a plastic bottle though, so I need to learn to make my own. I use Norwex face cloths for my face; no need for soap. I still use regular toothpaste, but I will start making my own when we run out. Also, I need to give my husband and kids ALOT of time to adjust to using bar shampoo before I spring homemade toothpaste on them. I am very slow in the process towards sustainability because my husband and kids get mad if I spring too much on them at once. I let them adjust to bar soap rather than body wash before adding bar shampoo. We have a lot of toothpaste in the house. When that runs out, they should be ready to adjust to homemade toothpaste.
you have the right attitude... if you change things too fast they may rebel! haha! Sounds like you're doing a great job living as sustainably as you all can..

Not everyone is into making products so I knew the links would help. Let me know if you need any assistance.
Wow, I do make home cleaners, but this is great!
U radiate such happy energy. Stay blessed
mrinalini devi thanks! You have a beautiful name! Many blessings to you x

Just stumbled upon your channel ! I LOVE IT !
Delighted you stumbled here!
In the Philippines we use tabo (with water inside) and soap in our houses to wash our bams after ya know "letting go" 😂 #ZeroWaste
very nice practice to do. :-) x
What a lovely little bathroom! Where do you buy attachments like dropper for the essential oils or sprayer?
Tracy Tuason ah the dropper comes with the oil. I buy rose hip seed, jojoba, argan and evening primrose oil.
The spray on bottle is from Kuishi Home. I linked them in the description box. They are a lovely company. X
You're so kind..... congratulations for sharing your experience. I also live that way...👏👏👏
Ah lovely. Nice and simple is the way. So easy and less stressful. x
Thank you for sharing your tips. It helps me alot.xx
Can u use water and a regular towel to wash and clean
🖐 .. hi Niamh. Thanks for all you give us 💋
Can you tell me what material you use for for your little cleansing wipes.
@@FairylandCottage
Ah...thanks Niamh. I truly appreciate you getting back to me (💋 for your cheek)
As it happens on the day just before your reply, l came across your video where you made your little cotton cleansing wipes 🙄 and your almond and rose water cleanser. Can ya believe that. I must be blind as a bat..lol !!
It's wonderful 💚 and l'll definitely give it a try.
God's peace be with you and yours dear girl 🖐
Can you please tell me where I can find a stone to place my soap?
I got this on the beach
Fairyland Cottage beautiful
I'm just totally in love with your channel n trying to follow your tips as well. And as per your recommendation I just bought bamboo toothbrush today. Yayyy!
yippee! some day bamboo toothbrushes will be everywhere
Definitely going to try these. Your bathroom is amazing! 😍
When you moved to this lifestyle, did you use up what you had first and replace as need be ?
Ally B yep. Some thing's took a while before I used them up but most only took a few months.
A question?
I am not judging just asking a question.
The water flossed is made of plastic and uses harmful batteries.
How much regular floss is really used and is it made harmful than a flosser
so true... I buy one with a rechargeable battery... not as good as silk floss I think but I have found it a compromise for my teeth and gum health...
@@FairylandCottage oh ok thank you for answering my question I really do like your videos.
I love this ❤️ feeling inspired!!
Great video Niamh! I have never heard of a water flosser before xx
Lizzie Dean Makes thanks Lizzie! They are great. I haven't looked back since I started. I love it. Just use in the shower once a day. My gums have stopped bleeding since I started....
So so beautiful 🌷🥰and what you wash! your skin is very beautiful!
Hi Niamh, I adore your videos so much x May I ask where i can purchase your natural sponge that you can pop soap inside? thanks, Jooles x x x
isn't it great... I got it in tkmaxx... I find it great for finding some eco products... I'm sorry I don't have a link for you... Niamh x
@@FairylandCottage Thank you so much xxx
Do you have a video on making homemade shampoo?
I love the stone soap dish. ☮️💕
stone from the beach...
I have never had a problem in customs... but maybe different countries have different rules ...
@@FairylandCottage thank you!
I love all your videos i found a granny is suggesting, and in india we used to wish hair with chick pea in our childhood
India has all the best solutions for health and beauty and life!
I just bought a 'water system', otherwise known as a bidet to cut down on toilet paper use. I bought one at Tushy, it was $65 (US) and only took 10-15 minutes and a screwdriver to install. I love it and highly recommend it - and no, I don't receive any kickbacks from the company.
brilliant! some day I would love one..
Inspirational and practical!
Wow! That was surprisingly awesome!
I just found out of your channel and I love it!! Definitely subscribing
Thanks so much for the sub! Im delighted you found the channel.
Hi, do you use the vinegar and water cleaning spray for the kitchen too?
Penelope Overton-Smith I have one for kitchen and one for bathroom. Does the job brilliantly!
Thank you
An other good alternative to air freshener is to light a match ! :) Thanks for the good advice in this video and keep going !!!!
Alice Collet I never heard of that one! Thanks for the tip! X
Yes tht truly wrks
Thank you for sharing your great tips. What is your recipe for your dry shampoo please. I started to make my own soap a few years ago.. Super simple... crock pot 3 ingredients ,,plus essential oils if you wish. :) Searching for clean products is difficult at times... many deceptions on labels :( Thank you again 💖
Where did you get the stone with a hole in it that your soap is on? I LOVE that!
isn't it gorgeous. It's from the beach...
@@FairylandCottage Yes, it's wonderful. I want something like that for my kitchen!
Loved this. What make up do you use? It's trickier to make your own cosmetics, I think.
It is trickier. I got my blusher, mascara and lipstick from a local maker. The foundation and powder is from Couleur Caramel. It’s in glass and vegan and cruelty free
Very positive energy....
thanks for your positivity too!
Great video as always. Never heard of water flosser before. Which one do you have? Thank you!
Angelica LeBouquet I just got a generic one online. It's Huawei brand. I got for about €25 online on amazon but I just typed in waterflosser and found the best deal. It's cordless and only needs a little water each time so easy to store in shower (some are huge)
Thank you so much for sharing and I appreciate the links! This came at the perfect time for me!
Ah I'm delighted! I think I linked everything I mentioned but let me know if I can help with anything. x
I have carved wooded discs in my bedroom and bathroom.
sounds beautiful!
As always I love your videos!
We are pretty much on the same page in terms of bathroom waste but I will definitely steal the idea of the ceramic disk hanging from the window with the essentials oils. Such a lovely touch :)
Also, your house is very old, right? Do you have any mould issue in the bathroom? If yes, would you still use vinegar on the walls to remove it?
Ah thanks! Yes the house is 300 yrs old so the bathroom gets tiny bit of mould if we don't keep the window open! I use the vinegar spray on it though if it pops up
Brilliant video Niamh. What are you using as dry shampoo? I haven't found a DIY that works well for me.
Claire deGras I'm just some raw cacao and a dribble of cornflour or arrowroot. It does the job but I would rave about it. What have you been using?
@@FairylandCottage I have tried tapioca starch and cornflour. My problem is my hair is so dark, cacao didn't work, I might try carob or cocoa. I have been using chickpea flour as shampoo too and I love it so thanks for that. I had tried lots of other nopoo recipes and they all wrecked my hair but this was amazing right from the first wash!
haha yes me too with chickpea flour from the first wash.. hooked!
I have never tried tapioca. Try carob powder as that is much darker. let me know how that goes...
Thanks for The ideas & The Simplicity. 😊💖🙏🙏
ah you are welcome. thanks for watching! x
@@FairylandCottage Thanks so much for your reply! I missed that :)
Excellent video, thank you!
Greetings,
Do have a pattern for the eye make up remover pads?

If I had it to do over again, I would put bidets in all 3 bathrooms in the house we built 18 years ago. I've considered the considered the convenience of it many times over the years.
I'd be the same if I was building a house!
Thank you for sharing this with the World! 🙌🏼
thanks for tips!!
Inspirational! Thank-you.
Thank you I’ll reach out to her.
I would love to change all my products to wood for my bathroom and kitchen but they always turn moldy and get ruined from water. Any idea why?
mould can form on wood from lack of ventilation and therefore too much condensation.
@@kirstyjackson7733 Great tip! Thanks will try this strategy!
Fairyland Cottage Thank you! ❤️
where do you get those cute bottles? the brown ones
They are from Kuishi Home.... The link is in the description.
do you have a tutorial on how to make shampoo?
