They’re elite soldiers from the Special Air Service (SAS) and Commando regiments who fought in the Australia’s longest war. Until America reveals their crimes most likely. Australia will tread carefully but they follow the Americans/nato politics, whom have done far more damage than us.
All 2 Commando and SASR operations were under NATO lead ISAF as if Journos know Operational details and situations. Australia is so privileged to vilify its Tier 1 Operators.
You can't put even the best of our soldiers into such savage, brutal, horrifying cercumstances and not expect equally savage, brutal, and horrifying actions. Such horrible acts have to be considered knowing the terrible situation. Even the very best can become crack. I'm not suggesting an answer. I suspect there may not be an answer.
The answer is simple. They saw these people as less than human.

You cant hold wartime soldiers to peacetime ideals. You want exceptional soldiers in combat you cant expect them to be not effected. Moreever seens like its horrendous to kill one civilian but ok to kill thousands in air atfacks.

It is sad that some our soldiers making the wrong decision and took it upon themselves to be the judge and executioner, but (this is a big BUT),,,the individuals in charge of operations and the government need to be held accountable as they are the ones that encourage and decide how they want Events to unfold,,,they don’t exactly tell you how and what you should do, but they dishonestly lead you to achieve the outcome they expect, thanks 60 minutes for being involved in this investigation, let’s not forget Australia has always been a proud nation , most of all our soldiers need our respect.

East Timor?
I’m an American infantry veteran and just being in the regular army I know if two soldiers who were in my unit who are now in prison for this type of behavior. Sad to say we were the bad guys in the Middle East
I have a lot of respect for these men that are stepping up and calling out their comrades. You have to be a professional and have morals or you’re no better than the savages you’re fighting.

Any group of people, men and women, when they have the freedom and licence to carry out appalling things, then they would because that is human nature. But when home with their loved ones they would deny this and claim they would never do terrible things, the reality is, when you have that freedom and licence with sanction, then they most have and definitely would.
As an Australian and as someone who had a small experience of the Australian Army, I find this deplorable and so disrespectful of the iconic rising sun emblem that all Australian Army soldiers wear and wear with pride. ,,,,,,,,, however this "warrior " mentality that is so barbarian and animal like in nature in my opinion is pathetic. This male need to be a "badass" is really small. In thousands of years of human habitation on this pretty blue round thing we as a species are still unable to evolve beyond a warrior mentality. How disappointing and laughable would we seem from an " onlooking entity " . Like come on, are we ever going to get our act together,,,,, probably not.
This could have been avoided if the RAR infantry battalions were given more responsibility. They were treated with kid gloves compared to SF units.

Good and effective leadership has to always be accompanied by supervision that reflects its values. What happens if the captain of the ship goes overboard, with no clear or established second-in-command? Someone always emerges as leader, and it’s not always the best one for the job nor one whom held the same values as the captain.

Should not have received this award. He is a slander and has made a lot of defamatory comments about financial institutions in 2023.
