I have used old pc's for linux based music recording studios. I have used power supply's for bench top power supplies for projects. I have chemically recovered the gold from processors and ram. Cooling fans are always useful in projects. I have used the empty cases in project builds (like my carbon arc furnace from microwave and pc parts.) Good source for hobby builders. You can also use a pyrolysis setup to turn the plastics back into oil. Peace
Nice! and thank you for sharing. I myself have done some alternative projects with scraped parts. This video was created to help as many people as possible with minimum knowledge of computers. Since the Pentium 90 is over 20 years old I would recommend using it for old games that no longer work on new systems or recycling it.
Here's a couple more: 11. Use it for a Linux OS system 12. Create a NAS box with something like FreeNAS (for desktop cases) 13. Create a router using something like pfSense
Although this video was intended for beginners, I thank you for sharing as those are all great ideas. Personally I think everyone should have at least 1 Linux disc laying around for emergencies. 🎄Happy Holidays🕎 Hope you enjoyed the video or at the very least found it interesting. And you get the gold star for having a properly functioning FS-4 fluorescent starter in the tube light bulb over your head. Just like Internet Explorer. Windows is the operating system that is used to download other operating systems.
Yeah. You can even use even an 486 with Linux Tiny Core. This is the smalles Linux possible. Another light Linux are: Puppy Linux, Arch Linux, Lubuntu.
@@brentfisher902 It isn't that hard to think of using a PC as a Linux box; as you've said, you've already thought of it, and so have a million other people.
11. A Streaming box. use the old PC to handle Streaming to networks like Twitch and UA-cam. 12. An Emulator. Use the old PC to emulate stuff like iOS, Android, Gameboy, Nintendo DS, older game consoles and such.
As a media center usually an old computer is too noisy for the living room and the electrical consumption is too high, probably you will actually save money by buying a Raspberry Pi instead.
I have an old E8400 Intel Duo Core at 3.0Ghz. 1) Upgraded the memory to 8GB ram. 2) Replaced the HDD with a 256GB SSD. 3) Upgraded to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. 4) Set screen resolution to 1920x1080 60fps. With these changes I can play full screen UA-cam 1080 60fps videos without any problems. I watch these videos even though I only have an average of 8.5BMbps internet download speed.
I tip my hat to you sir, I assume the SSD gave it the most boost. Interesting that you are rocking a 10 year old CPU. In truth it all depends on what you are using it for. 🙂 Are you using the on-board video or graphics card?
@@TheThorns Not to long ago I went way out on a limb and invested a whopping $20 to purchase at AliExpress a quad core Q9500 CPU, plus shipping was free. I was shocked to find it to be so cheap.
I remember watching this video in 2016 back when I first got into the pc hardware and electronics space. Now nearly 8 years later it has now resurfaced onto my recommended list lol. Time flies.
Have done this myself, I wanted to mention emulation but youtube is strange when bringing up that topic. 🎄Happy Holidays🕎 Hope you enjoyed the video or at the very least found it interesting. Please sub if you haven't already & have a safe new year. 🙂
This is one of the best videos i have seen on the internet regarding old computers and what to do with them! thnx for the steam stream box tip! i have an old computer wich i can use as a stream box for my tv in my living room, so will probably be lookin into that. Youve earned yourself a sub today.
I got parts and computers all the way back to the late 80s and forward, and a lot of it too. I have and still use some of the old hardware I got to play older games and such and or other applications and it kinda been my line for over 20 years now to use a computer for the purpose it best suits for rather than tossing it away. I always salvaged repaired and kept working stuff and take the broken stuff to recycle. I can't throw away stuff that works just fine just because it gets old in a way so it is better to make use of it in some way or give or sell to those who want's it instead
depending on what you have in working order you may have some gems that go for a pretty penny. Some Retro hardware goes for big bucks these days depending on how rare it is. Please sub if you have not already 😋
no it does not, over the years it gets more expensive. because there are only a few older rams but much people like sever farms still buy older ram in large amounts. So the order to actually existing ram is higher, so the price gets higher. Its even a thing in trading
Dom I remember 32mb ram costs like over 100 doallrs before but now 4gb costs like around 30 dollars ... high-end ram is of course expensive but it's still getting cheaper...
I agree that is partially true. Some RAM like RDRAM and certain types of SDRAM can get expensive but that is supply and demand, However the last three generations which spans 17 years can be acquired at minimal cost. What do you consider expensive? found 1GB DDR kingston for like $10 bucks, and 2GB DDR2 for $10. Also found 8GB 2x DDR3 for $40.
The thing is .... ppl who wanna throw away will do so. But if it saves one machine from being scrapped .... bravo! I like the idea of yours, saving resources and energy, using devices up to the point where it really makes no more sense. I mean _really. Thumbs up mate.
Thanks! , Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
a lot people do, "unfortunately", "literally" and "actually". Also people tend to say "video" in their videos a thousand times. I guess some words are fun saying them and serve as verbal /phonetical satisfaction for the brain. Just remember, as you were a toddler and said the same thing 1000x in a row. (not indicating this to this youtuber, just general observations)
I have an old windows 95 computer that I stripped out a lot of programs and loaded with my music files, plugged into my old sound system to play music. I can even rip music from CD's/cassettes/tap back into the computer. Works great.
Yes!! I actually built a fullsize arcademachine running MAME with a crt monitor and an old pentium 4 HT office pc. Works great and was alot of fun to build!
respect...I had an old space invaders machine donated to mebecause the vertical and Horizontal hold was not holding after being switched off and then on again, replaced a few caps, works like brand new.there's even a 20cent coin in it from 1976 hehe
Even me, I still have an old Gateway computer that runs Windows 95 that I use for running old dos games and programs since I also have a handful of cds that I bought back in 1997 which none of those can run on more modern os's such as Windows 7 or 10.
Could always use dosbox to run older games on a newer O.S. Sorry for the delay in response. As I'm sure you already know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you at least enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
I always keep my old computers as I can never seem to part with them. The only problem is I'm running out of space. I should probably junk the Windows 95 system.
I would have to agree, just move over all programs and files to a new machine and use virtual machine or dosBox. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
I love what you said in the first step, I love to get a computers even if its second hand I don't know where I can get here for a second hand computer/machine
I have gotten computers from friends, family, out of the trash, previous jobs, or just buying cheap. I guess it all depends on your area & luck. Glad you liked the video, please sub if you can 😋
Although I agree don't blame the teenagers as there are plenty of people in 20s,30s, 40s, so on that have the same mentality. Long story short I just hate to see it in general. Please Sub if you can 😊
I'm still rocking with my BSEL modded Intel Pentium E2160, vmodded ATI HD4670 and 19'' 1280x1024 monitor. I can play AAA games well like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion/Skyrim, The Witcher 2, Dragon Age 1/2/3 and Fallout 3/NV/TTW. Too bad I can't play Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3, because my GPU doesn't support DX11, but I can watch ''Let's play'' videos and it's almost like playing the game. I have my studio tour and gaming setup video on my channel.
I have often had large projects to render using 3Ds Max. rather than use my main machine I will sometime use 2 or 3 older computers and split the frames between them.
Unless it's a maxed out high end machine under regular loading, the power draw is going to be basically negligible. Computers simply don't use that much power, and only a portion of that can be gained by replacing it, all at the cost of the new machine and waste. That's honestly probably the most nonsensical complaint I've ever heard.
Might be showing my age but got it from blockbuster. Sorry for the delay in response. As I'm sure you already know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you at least enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Thank you so much for this video! I hope to restore all my pcs I have put aside due to complications and just wanted new PC. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOU ARE DOING WITH EDUCATING SOME LIKE ME.
As long as you recycle it after the fact, I could see that being lots of fun. Personally I would love to load an old hard drive into a (skeet machine) clay pigeon machine.
***** its funny that you mentioned that. I just watched that again two nights ago havent seen it in years forgot all about that scene until it came on man i was laughing so hard, such a gem of a comedy
This actually helped a lot. I have an old ASUS motherboard I purchased for 10$ at a thrift store. It was never used, but I had no idea what to use it for. I'm considering making it a server for one of my favorite steam games. Thanks for making this!
I have an old Dell Dimension 4600 that I'm using as a Debian file server. I also have it configured to where I can connect one of my personal devices to it via OpenVPN so I can access all the files away from home. That's a good way to reuse an old Pentium 4 computer. While that isn't something that your average computer user will do, I am still reusing old, "useless" hardware. Heck, I even have backup computers with a core 2 duo incase my current server dies. I could just take the hard drive and swap it into one of those lol
Thanks for sharing and I generally have the same mentality. If it's not broken I can always find a use for it. Debian is a great way to breath new life into old machines. For users reading this Debian is a Linux distro. Please sub if you can.
I used to have the case on the left at the beginning of the video sometime around 15 years ago. If I still had it, i'd build a new system inside of it for the sake of nostalgia. I loved that case, makes me miss the good ol' days of WIN9X. Mine housed an old Biostar board with a Pentium 3 chip style cpu at either 800mhz or 833mhz (can't remember exactly what it was) with 256MB of sdram and a 20gb hard drive. Hearing the BIOS beep, floppy disk seek and windows 98 logon sound takes me back... I had so many old machines I scrapped over the years with that type of hardware, sometimes even older with some variant of win9x and tons of original programs installed. These were basically old boxes people were throwing away, I'm kicking myself for doing so. It's getting hard to find time capsules like that nowadays.
Thanks for sharing, they are good old solid cases. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Ok so I live in a third world country, who can be so kind to donate one 4GB DDR2 laptop RAM =3= they are crazy expensive on ebay... and they seem to be non existent here...
How about making a network attached storage machine for the household. I have mine outfitted with twin 4tb hard drives, and have my entire DVD collection stored on there. Anyone on my home network can stream movies, work on shared files, or just back-up their machine to the shared storage.
This is a novice tutorial, but for others this is a great idea and thank you for sharing. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Cool ideas. I turned my old higher end P4 into a Karaoke machine which is hooked up to the living room TV and stereo. I set the box behind one of the speakers so it's out of sight. Just put the .exe file in the startup and it self loads. I of course have a wireless keyboard and mouse along with a usb mic.
Okay making an old computer a karaoke machine is just amazing. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂

This video was so helpful: Can you do another video of "how to tie your shoes". I know it sounds OBVIOUS but some people out there may not have enough common sense or lack the knowledge of how to tie their shoes. Thank you.
Or you can destroy it, put it on youtube and make money. Seems like everyone does that with electronics nowadays. Unfortunately, it works better with the new computer than the old one.
I got an old computer with a parallel port so I could use an old EPROM programmer I acquired. Also great for audio recording and editing, movie making, and internet-surfing.
Chromebooks are great for basic browsing and media machines. However I personally feel that they lack creative flexibility. For example 3E modeling. However if interested I do have a tutorial on how to run Wolfenstein 3D on the Chromebook in offline mode. ua-cam.com/video/diGqudygkfw/v-deo.html
I think a much better idea is to turn an old PC into an Ubuntu box and then create a bunch of projects. webserver, create your own code and design, test out the Linux operating system if you haven't already. learn Python and PHP and all that fun stuff. Turn it into a VPN.
For many beginners probably not so much although I think everyone should try Linux at some point. I do however agree that all children should learn to code at a young age. Unfortunately this was not the case for me as a child.
I've used at least half of these recommendations. I refurbished a 5-yr-old pc and gave it to my brother who hasn't used computers in about 15 years. He's quite pleased. Also, before Amazon Fire, I streamed Netflix and Hulu on my tv. I use one older laptop to maintain my outside surveillance camera recordings. I have a 2000 Gateway (running 98) that has never seen the internet that I use for writing -- I keep my chapters on separate 3.44 disks--because I can. Besides, young people today don't know how to turn them on so, it's a security feature :-D

Steam Stream Box sounds like a great idea actually. I have plenty of older, and some not so old computers which I don't really use. I even have a computer that my friend pulled out of the dumpster (my old school caught on fire, so it got torn down, and believe it or not we pulled out a working keyboard, monitor, mouse, and computer and plugged it all in and had a whole functional setup just from the dumpster haha). I'm planning on using the dumpster PC for an arcade machine build. You don't need that powerful of a computer to run old arcade games on. I currently have a beast of a computer so that's why I don't use any of my older or less powerful computers.
***** Wow haha. The computer I found didn't have a single problem really other than a couple capacitors looked like they were going just a little bad. Nevertheless, the computer still worked perfectly fine. The fan would always be going full speed, but that's probably due to one of the capacitors. It had Windows XP on it even though the sticker read Windows Vista. It was locked of course, and so was the BIOS. So I did a little trick where we put the Windows installation disk in it, then turned it off, unhooked the hard drive, turned it on, and the only option it would have would be to booth from the disk drive. So as soon as it booted from the disk drive I plugged the hard drive back in, and from there on we completely installed a new image of Windows on it. I haven't used since I think January of this year, which is when my friend and I found it :P Also, I love your videos, keep up the great work!
thing is. pc powersupplys make a decent bench supply for electronics, can be turned into battery chargers, and a heaps of other things. can power amplifiers and whatnot. heatsinks are.. as a scrap metal not worthy, but you can actually reuse the heatsinks them selfs. as heatsinks. on other projects. like LEDs, amplifiers, whatnot.. and the list goes on.
Lots of good advice and ideas here, thanks for sharing. I myself have used numerous machines for parts in projects. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
You can probably turn it into a security camera for your home, to just be running and monitoring your home, also there are phonelime simulators that could be useful for opening garage doors and gates, maybe they can be set to automatically set up for your vehicle, but that would be way too geeky for a regular person.
Sounds awesome. I had a friend that used an old windows XP machine and had a OBD2 to USB tester adapter for his cars. He basically had the old computer in his garage so friends could plug up and check the error codes of the car.
My old computer had Windows XP and didn't run so good. So I installed Windows 2000 and it's great :) we can actually somewhat modernize Windows 2000 in this day and age. It takes VLC Media Player up to version 1.0.5, some releases of Audacity, and it can even use Virtualbox and Microsoft Virtual PC!
Thanks for sharing, great way to resurrect an old machine. Depending on the age of the hardware I usually go Linux. Please sub if you have not already 😋
I ressurected a optiplex 745. it was working really great on vista. i had minecraft running at 200 300 fps with a nvidia 7600gt 256mb intel core duo 1.86 ghz.
Nice to see you've added game server as a point in your video, for anyone interested in hosting your own Minecraft server, you can download MineOS which is a turnkey Linux distribution that aims to easily help set up bukkit, vanilla and even Tekkit servers. Google MineOS, it's free. :-) Nice vid btw.
thanks, Do you happen to know the min hardware requirements for mineOS? I have seen a minecraft server done on a raspberry pi so I assume it needs at least a 1GHZ CPU.
Not particularly sure on the exact specs, but yeah 1 GHz or higher is best (Same with RAM - 1GB or more). For a test, I ran this on an old EEE 900 netbook (900MHz CPU) and it seemed to run fine (Bit of lag here and there), only on vanilla though, plugins would not do well aha. Bear in mind, there are other versions of MineOS available here: minecraft.codeemo.com/mineoswiki/index.php?title=MineOS_comparison Hope this helps ;)
bought a new pre built pc. used it over 2 years never had problem. one day I decided to slowly upgrade and eventually chuck in beast vid card, so power supply 650w was recommended. so I bought 650w psu, installed it month later started to hear ringing my ears I never heard before, now I see adds all over you youtube about Tinnitus.
Interesting videos. There are a lot of people still who cannot afford a pc or laptop. It would be helpful to install on some machines Zorin OS Education and pass them on to students of any age. Zorin OS looks like Windows and can be installed on either full or lite version on older machines. I use Ubuntu, but my brother's children enjoy Zorin OS Education a lot and in this lockdown, in the UK they are doing their school on Zorin which has a lot of educational software - free.
Zorin or a different linux distro is always a great way to go. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
UPGRADE the PC and switch to LINUX, while reserving some of the upgrades for a future build. Since 2014, I upgraded a 2008 HP dc5850 (AM2+ motherboard) with an AMD Phenom II X4 B97 at 3.2GHz, maxed out the memory to 8GB (800MHz), added a cheap 1GB GeForce 8400GS and USB 3.0 including front panel for $14 from China. I use the HP a lot with Virtualbox and the Host OS is Xubuntu 18.04. All Virtual Machines (VM) are very responsive, mainly because I use the ZFS file system with 3 striped HDDs and 1½ GB of memory cache (kind of cached RAID-0). Cache and HDDs share the lz4 compression (compression ratio 1.7). The VMs boot fast without SSD from a 10 years old PC. - Windows 10 boots in 45 seconds and reboots in 34 seconds, - Windows XP boots in 32 seconds and reboots in 24 seconds, - Xubuntu 18.04 boots in 30 seconds and reboots in 7 (SEVEN) seconds. Note, that the Host OS also Xubuntu 18.04 boots considerably slower on the real HW. It boots in 46 seconds using the fastest HDD. My HDDs are 3.5" 500GB (135MB/s), 3.5" 1TB (112MB/s) and a 2.5" 320GB (78MB/s), accumulated throughput in theory 320MB/s. With the Linux DD utility I measured 275MB/s. I want to supplement it with StoreMI (the ZFS version not the ZEN+ X470 version) by adding a 120GB SSD as read and write cache for the HDDs. These caches L2ARC and ZIL are a standard facility of ZFS and thus the Ubuntu family. I have a $8 SATA-3 PCIe card from China to complement the 4 SATA-2 connectors of the motherboard (3 HDDs and 1 DVD) and to accommodate the SSD speeds of >>300MB/s.
Hey DoctorNoob: at 5:04 in you video you talk about streaming from one computer to another to your TV. I'd like to do my Fallout 4 like that. Could you do a video on that, or send me a link on how to do it. Thanks. Best Wishes n Blessings. Keith
I actual made a video for just that and it will be up Wednesday. However if you want to check out this link it is not that hard to do. store.steampowered.com/streaming/
*Classic Game Emulation Machine* Most old computers can play classic game systems including Playstation games which were released until 2004! Or even newer systems depending on what you consider an old computer to be. I have an old PC running over 70 old game systems, some include Nintendo NES/SNES/WII/Gameboy Advance/N64/DS/Gamecube etc... Sony Playstation 1/2/PSP Atari Commodore Pinball games TurboGrafx 16 Stand-Up Arcade games like Time Crisis/Pac-Man/Daytona USA/Mortal Kombat/DDR etc... Sega Genesis/Dreamcast/GameGear/Master System/Saturn etc...
I don't get local game streaming personally. Just plug the main rig into the TV and have your workbench with a secondary monitor somewhere in the same room,. I find game streaming is useless unless you use Ethernet. Wifi game streaming would have been useful if it was stable, but it isn't. The only way I would use game streaming is to stream games from the main rig to a small Windows tablet in order to game in another room. But if I must use Wired connection to make it even closely playable it's useless for me.. The rest of advice is good though. :)
Personally I use corded not wifi. However when I have used wifi I have only seen issues with 54g, haven't seen to many issues with wireless N and above. I must agree that there are to many variables with wifi game streaming. The wireless on the router the wireless card on the device, the antennas, the distance and walls. go corded if you can!

Another idea that I used is to install FreeNAS on it, stuff it full of ram and as many HDD's as you can and make a home server / owncloud/ plex server / sick beard music stream and retriever... I think I sepnt a total of $20 on maxing out ram, and $220 for 6TB of western digital red drives... Been running for over 6 months without a failure
Thanks for sharing! FreeNAS or even just sharing a folder on your network is a great way to reuse a machine. Obviously shared folder being the more novice approach. For some reason I had tons of issues with dualcore PCs in past and know a lot people who did the same issues. To keep it short all I can suggest for dualcore PCs is to recycle them. Everything else is fine really just dualcores are a nightmare.
I think the first I had was Intel, that was somewhere back in 2009 not sure anymore about later ones, but friends all had AMD. The moment I had the chance to upgrade I went for quadcore and never had major issues ever since.
At least it's a door stop and not in a landfill, LOL. 🎄Happy Holidays🕎 Hope you enjoyed the video or at the very least found it interesting. Please sub if you haven't already & have a safe new year. 🙂
IF PSU is still works and it is good. You can convert it to the cool "lab power supply". Give it to other family member. Cause you don't need high tech hardware for internet browsing and/or text editor.
#11 make a sleeper pc in it . Any computer case can fit a specific motherboard like ATX and micro ATX if not dill holes and mod the case to fit your desired specs

Top thing to do with old pc. See if possible* Put in intel core 2 quad q6600 gtx 1050ti 8gb of (prefer) ddr3 ram ddr2 should do. Then enjoy playing gta v on avg of 40fps.
It's sad that I'm stuck on the 1050 ti right now due to chip shortage. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
I was gonna throw away my brothers e-machine from 07 and it was right around the time i was gonna build a new gaming rig. so i took out the celeron D motherboard and practically all the internals and reused the case. The funny part is although the pc looks like it can't even run candy crush, It has a i3 6100, 8gb of ram and a gtx 1050 ti. But by far the best part is the look people give me when i go to lan parties.
I made a samba server of it... I only turn it on when I need it so it doesn't consumes power all the time, it turns on/off by a single button press, not keybord/mouse/monitor required.
Nice, 🎄Happy Holidays🕎 Hope you enjoyed the video or at the very least found it interesting. Please sub if you haven't already & have a safe new year. 🙂
You forgot the most useful.. turn it into a hardware firewall. Way better protection than anything you can get in a software firewall or firewall in modem/router.
I still have my Packard Bell 2440 that still works but after windows XP came out I could no longer down load any updates to it. I had just installed a new hard drive and dvd cd burner and was told that I could no longer get any more drivers updated to it. It had many games the kids used to play on it as well as other things it could still do.
DoctorNoob That thing has been sitting in its original box since they had the law suit because Packard Bell was cought installing used parts in new computers. They sent us the paperwork to fill out. We would have received exactly $14 in reimbursement from that lawsuit. We have the original paperwork on it that says we paid over 3 grand for it. $14 was nothing but an insult. The only ones that benifited from that was the lawyers as usual. My daughter was using it in her room to play sims on it was the last time we used it. lol. After that,I had a friend custom make us a really nice computer ordering all the parts online. It cost us $400 and we had that computer up until we bought a lap top,my other daughter still has that custom job,it has gotten a few upgrades and still runs.lol.

Interestingly, this comment is a bit outdated now.
@@nathannationanimations eh… I still wouldn’t call anything newer than a Pentium 4 to be really old.
Here's a couple more:
11. Use it for a Linux OS system
12. Create a NAS box with something like FreeNAS (for desktop cases)
13. Create a router using something like pfSense

#11. Linux machine.
That is a great way to bring new life to a really old PC. Especially if you just use it for internet. For beginners I would recommend Ubuntu.
DoctorNoob I also would say xcfe environment would be best if Linux distributions have it I use Linux mint xcfe on a old Dell d410 works fine
Use the old PC to emulate stuff like iOS, Android, Gameboy, Nintendo DS, older game consoles and such.
you cant emulate iOS

As a media center usually an old computer is too noisy for the living room and the electrical consumption is too high, probably you will actually save money by buying a Raspberry Pi instead.

I use an old laptop running linux for that.
Sell it and purchase a less ridiculous pair of spectacles.
hey now I love those glasses! Can't wear them while driving but still!
I like them too
haahahaha lol i think it looks pretty cool kinda like vayne from league :D
Keatononame 😂 damn fucking savage
lol
I am just using the onboard Intel Q45/Q43 Express video Chipset. And yes, the SSD was a big boost.
Nice, way to get some new life out of somewhat old hardware. Bet the SSD made a huge difference.

Time flies.
One of the main reasons I pride myself on fresh ideas and accuracy or Algorithm might just like me today LOL.
Number 11: Build a Mame cabinet/Retro emulation machine lol
Have done this myself, I wanted to mention emulation but youtube is strange when bringing up that topic.

This is one of the best videos i have seen on the internet regarding old computers and what to do with them! thnx for the steam stream box tip! i have an old computer wich i can use as a stream box for my tv in my living room, so will probably be lookin into that. Youve earned yourself a sub today.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Sorry for the delay in response. As I'm sure you already know I can't reply to everyone. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃
Neo?
i took the red pill
Not all parts get cheaper. RAM gets more expensive over the years !
Yea, what is the deal with the RAM? I am trying to max my pc and even second hand DDR2 is expensive as hell
ram gets cheaper not expensive...
no it does not, over the years it gets more expensive. because there are only a few older rams but much people like sever farms still buy older ram in large amounts.
Well done video, I am sure people can use this valuable information.
thanks!

Thanks. I especially like the idea of the steam streaming machine.

Actually I think this guy actually really actually likes the word actually.
Actually.
a lot people do, "unfortunately", "literally" and "actually". Also people tend to say "video" in their videos a thousand times. I guess some words are fun saying them and serve as verbal /phonetical satisfaction for the brain. Just remember, as you were a toddler and said the same thing 1000x in a row.

I have an old windows 95 computer that I stripped out a lot of programs and loaded with my music files, plugged into my old sound system to play music. I can even rip music from CD's/cassettes/tap back into the computer. Works great.
Cool!
Ah come on...no MAME? Who else here built a Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator with old an pc?
Réjean Beaudette
thanks! great idea!
Yes!! I actually built a fullsize arcademachine running MAME with a crt monitor and an old pentium 4 HT office pc. Works great and was alot of fun to build!
yeah, C 64 machine over here on my end
respect...I had an old space invaders machine donated to mebecause the vertical and Horizontal hold was not holding after being switched off and then on again, replaced a few caps, works like brand new.there's even a 20cent coin in it from 1976 hehe
oh. I forgot to mention. THE C.R.T. is also Black and Whitecool shit

I love what you said in the first step, I love to get a computers even if its second hand I don't know where I can get here for a second hand computer/machine
I have gotten computers from friends, family, out of the trash, previous jobs, or just buying cheap. I guess it all depends on your area & luck.

I actually just have 2 older laptops running Rosetta myself.
Just saw the video and I liked the idea of a turning my old PC in a render box. Never heard of that before. So thank you !
I have often had large projects to render using 3Ds Max. rather than use my main machine I will sometime use 2 or 3 older computers and split the frames between them.
Depending on how old the machine is, the power draw will not be worth it. Better to recycle it.
could possibly buy a newer PSU
a newer psu wont make the other components more efficient
I`ll tell you a secret - they ALL idle at 60-70W no matter how new or old it is. Your argument is invalid.
Nope, still worth it
You can also build a MAME machine. I have two old pc's in my arcade cabs and they work great!!!
yep!
You have same Wall.E like me back in 2007

This actually helped a lot. I have an old ASUS motherboard I purchased for 10$ at a thrift store. It was never used, but I had no idea what to use it for. I'm considering making it a server for one of my favorite steam games. Thanks for making this!
Glad it gave you some ideas.
nice vid!
thanks.
yep. you should do an updated vid on this
I have an old Dell Dimension 4600 that I'm using as a Debian file server.

My new $100 case didn't even come with a speaker. Not sure how common that is. I like having the BIOS beep.
Thanks for sharing, they are good old solid cases. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Ok so I live in a third world country, who can be so kind to donate one 4GB DDR2 laptop RAM =3= they are crazy expensive on ebay... and they seem to be non existent here...
unfortunately all I have to spare are some 2 gig chips, for DDR 2.
***** Oh, bummer, but hey thanks for taking the time to reply :)
How about making a network attached storage machine for the household. I have mine outfitted with twin 4tb hard drives, and have my entire DVD collection stored on there. Anyone on my home network can stream movies, work on shared files, or just back-up their machine to the shared storage.

drop it on your foot
ouch...
I'd only do that if I was wearing the steel toe capped boots I wear at work. Otherwise I'd break my foot and end up on crutches. lol
I'll be doing 1 and 5 with my current desktop once I replace it. I plan to reuse the antec case for the new one.

Cool ideas. I turned my old higher end P4 into a Karaoke machine which is hooked up to the living room TV and stereo. I set the box behind one of the speakers so it's out of sight. Or you can destroy it, put it on youtube and make money. Seems like everyone does that with electronics nowadays. Unfortunately, it works better with the new computer than the old one.
I will never understand that. Especially when people set electronics on fire which is illegal in the United States btw.

My 1st PC was a dumpster computer as an 8th grader. you would be surprised what people throw away just because 1 fan went bad.

***** that is another idea, they could probably make them security monitors with a cheap camera, to record what happens at home.

Bear in mind, there are other versions of MineOS available here: minecraft.codeemo.com/mineoswiki/index.php?title=MineOS_comparison
Hope this helps ;)

Interesting videos. There are a lot of people still who cannot afford a pc or laptop. It would be helpful to install on some machines Zorin OS Education and pass them on to students of any age. Zorin OS looks like Windows and can be installed on either full or lite version on older machines. I use Ubuntu, but my brother's children enjoy Zorin OS Education a lot and in this lockdown, in the UK they are doing their school on Zorin which has a lot of educational software - free.

- Windows 10 boots in 45 seconds and reboots in 34 seconds,
- Windows XP boots in 32 seconds and reboots in 24 seconds,
- Xubuntu 18.04 boots in 30 seconds and reboots in 7 (SEVEN) seconds.
Thanks for sharing all the info.
I'm using the sheet metal to make parts for my record cutter, wich seems to not be working as well.. hey, at least im having fun re-using things..

I actual made a video for just that and it will be up Wednesday. However if you want to check out this link it is not that hard to do. store.steampowered.com/streaming/
Cool thanks DN. Keith
*Classic Game Emulation Machine*
Most old computers can play classic game systems including Playstation games which were released until 2004! Or even newer systems depending on what you consider an old computer to be.
I have an old PC running over 70 old game systems, some include
Nintendo NES/SNES/WII/Gameboy Advance/N64/DS/Gamecube etc...
Sony Playstation 1/2/PSP
Atari
Commodore
Pinball games
TurboGrafx 16
Stand-Up Arcade games like Time Crisis/Pac-Man/Daytona USA/Mortal Kombat/DDR etc...

You can use one for a CNC controller even as far back as being able to run DOS, technically, primitive as hell, but it works.
although a great idea I was trying to keep most of these for the novice user. At any rate thanks for sharing. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Hey! this was really helpfull, thanx man!
my pleasure as always.🙂 sub if you can.
i subscribed u already bro
first time viewing, really enjoyed, any tips on getting 2gb DDR2 Ram for a laptop? eBay is pricey, and Amazon looks like only newer stuff...
ddr2 is pricey because they don't sell it anymore make sure its for laptops they will be smaller sticks than desktop ram
Sorry for the delay in response. As I'm sure you already know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you at least enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂

Lots of Vintage PC's are being sold at Ebay right now and they do sell if p[riced reasonably/fairly
As a last resort you can always sell it as scrap. metals are going for great prices on occasion. Sorry for the delay in response. As I'm sure you already know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you at least enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
Well thought out list, DoctorNoob. Do you recall where you got that lamp with the shelving in the background of your video?
Got it from Target when I 1st moved to the Seattle area, previous lamp did not survive the move :(
Another idea that I used is to install FreeNAS on it, stuff it full of ram and as many HDD's as you can and make a home server / owncloud/ plex server / sick beard music stream and retriever...
I think I sepnt a total of $20 on maxing out ram, and $220 for 6TB of western digital red drives... Been running for over 6 months without a failure
Thanks for sharing! FreeNAS or even just sharing a folder on your network is a great way to reuse a machine. Obviously shared folder being the more novice approach. we did number for with our old xp machine (VGA to TV) and for youtube at 720p that ain't bad
sweet glad it works. Since it is XP you might be able to still use the media center feature which has a nice GUI for TV's
For some reason I had tons of issues with dualcore PCs in past and know a lot people who did the same issues. To keep it short all I can suggest for dualcore PCs is to recycle them. Everything else is fine really just dualcores are a nightmare.
AMD or Intel, Never really had any issues myself with dual core Intel, except the 1st generation dual cores.
I think the first I had was Intel, that was somewhere back in 2009 not sure anymore about later ones, but friends all had AMD. The moment I had the chance to upgrade I went for quadcore and never had major issues ever since.
I rebuilt mine with a ASUS z170 Pro Gaming MB, an i3 and 8GB of Ram. Cost me $250, plenty of room for upgrading
Nice! thanks for sharing.
Please Sub if you can 😊
Tried all that stuff. Only works as a good doorstop !
At least it's a door stop and not in a landfill, LOL.

Nice video dude!
thanks!
IF PSU is still works and it is good. You can convert it to the cool "lab power supply".
Give it to other family member. Cause you don't need high tech hardware for internet browsing and/or text editor.
I always keep a spare PSU around for projects. Also good to have a spare if your main rigs PSU goes out and need a temporary solution.
Great tips!
Thanks!
No problem! Glad it was helpful, Please sub if you can. 😀
Watching this on an HP Elitebook 8460p such as the one shown in start of video :)
Now that is kinda funny.
Please Sub if you can 😊
#11 make a sleeper pc in it . Any computer case can fit a specific motherboard like ATX and micro ATX if not dill holes and mod the case to fit your desired specs
Not a bad idea,

The first thing to do is throw it in the trash and for the second to the tenth thing look a thing # 1.
as long as it's recycled and not in a landfill I see no issue with your viewpoint. Sorry for the delay, as I'm sure you know I can't reply to everyone. Hope you enjoyed the video. Have a Happy Halloween 🎃 & please sub if you can.🙂
ONLY BEST USE IS AS WORD PROCESSOR WITH PRINTER TO WRITE LETTERS, INVOICES ETC. !!!!!!
Your words just took me back to when I was a kid and best buy had computers in one isle and dedicated word processor machines in the other. Please sub if you can 😋
Top thing to do with old pc. See if possible*
Put in intel core 2 quad q6600
gtx 1050ti
8gb of (prefer) ddr3 ram
ddr2 should do.

Nice,

You forgot the most useful.. turn it into a hardware firewall. Way better protection than anything you can get in a software firewall or firewall in modem/router.

I still have my Packard Bell 2440 that still works but after windows XP came out I could no longer down load any updates to it. I had just installed a new hard drive and dvd cd burner and was told that I could no longer get any more drivers updated to it. It had many games the kids used to play on it as well as other things it could still do.
I remember reading somewhere that you could install winXP on a Pentium overdrive chip which may be compatible with your chipset.
