    Sugar is really good. I have used sugar in my own mix to install veneer bricks. Actually its not only slowing down the set time, but increase the strength of the concrete, (or bond) and somehow the cohesion force as well. Its also increase the plasticity as well, so if plasticizer is used, i would recommend to mix it before.

    I've been watching these videos for the last 4 months during this deployment after finding out I will be the QA/QC our projects. Ive learned so much! Thank you. Any chance you can point me in the direction to find information like this about subbase/basecourse. We have been getting good crete but it doesnt matter if we aren't getting a good foundation for it to be placed on.

    Hi Tyler, I really enjoy your videos. I am a materials engineer by trade but work in the semiconductor area so don't really get my hands dirty. I'm not really in a position to do my own mixture design for the projects I do around my house. The question is are there one or two admixtures I could add to a bag of premix concrete, Quickcrete, that would make the concrete better (stronger, less porous, easier to work with) I'm in Florida so freezing isn't an issue. Thanks

    I heard that cement can often have hexavalent chromium in it because the high heat of the kiln produces them and they can cause cancer. I also heard that in certain european countries they virtually eliminate this problem with ferrous sulfate to reduce the chromium from +6 back down to +3. But they don't seem to have these rquirements in the US. I would like to make a cistern or pool for drinking water and I would like to know how to effectively reduce the chromium myself.

    In the USA (in snow Country = Tennessee Hills) they used the unofficial additive of "Antifreeze" (car antifreeze to be exact) to slow down the cure and stop cracking - this was done by the local Habitat for Humanity Team and was used very successfully - I don't know the exact mixture.

    Salt (NaCl) will accelerate at low concentrations but it disperses and retards at high concentrations and even provides some shrinkage control. In the oilfield high concentration salt slurries are often desirable because of the benefits you get from better pumpability and shrinkage control. But as you mentioned using it in construction concrete is not desirable due to its corrosive action on steel. In Brazil they had apartment buildings collapse. It was discovered that the contractor had tried to save money by using beach sand and seawater in the construction concrete which ultimately led to rebar corrosion.

    CaCl2, displacement reaction? Electronegativity? Ions go into solution in water and just pair up with the greatest potential differences to form new compounds. Eg CaCl2 + MgCO3 = MgCl2 + CaCO3. Calcite is a brilliant seed for crystal formation. Just a guess though, there are a lot of different compounds and corresponding reactions going on in concrete.

    How is it that professionals don't understand how or why retarders/water reducers work? They work on the same mechanical principle as how salt reduces boiling point. The chemical reaction of the concrete is entirely dependent upon hydrofeed... and there's 3 reasons why sugar works so well. #1- it's hydrophilic #2- it's crystalline #3- the combination of a SIMPLE crystalline structure that doesn't self order very well, makes it perfect for regulating water dispersion.
    This is the same principle that allows African mud frogs to survive extensive periods of drought, and how some animals survive freezing. They trigger a response in the body which drops insulin production. This slows the body's processing of sugars and creates high concentration of sugar in the bloodstream. They basically force themselves into a diabetic coma, the sugar keeps their blood from freezing AND slows water uptake by the tissues.

    Dude, banging video title, immediately clicked when I saw the variety and scope! That aside though. Your green screen/software/camera could maybe use an upgrade. Maybe a software like from Adobe to remove or key the green? If it's a sheet, hang it straight and make sure the lighting is even. On the camera side, more fps MIGHT help bit that's a bit of a guess tbh I'm not entirely sure if these softwares are AI driven, and if more frame samples would help...
    Otherwise, good energy and "forward-movingness" so far 👌. Excited to watch, might modify this comment by the end if need be but kept it up, good on you!
    Edit: I'll just let you be you :p. Just FYI, pronunciation-wise it's exactly how you thing it is the -amine... tri-ethanol-amine.
    It's also if I remember in the order it should be so like a nonsense example might be 4-di-ethyl-5-methyl-triptophan. Sorry I just needed a long enough carbon chain. Barring the nonsense around the nature of the chemical, the number yells you on which carbon number the molecular group can be found.. di and tri etc would be how many of that group. The rest are all just various molecular groups and variations there-on. Ethyl and methyl are both part of the alkyl group, so might feature COOH. Tryptophan is a neurotransmitter and I think a base for serotonin? As above, there is the amine (amide? I forget the difference) would be another "molecular group" constituent, of a different class to, say, alcohols... There is an ethanol group present.. so knowing methane Ethan propane butane.... understanding and then being able to draw the chemical propanol for instance becomes easier because you likely now know how long the carbon chain is (sometimes you might run into regular numerical terms) and its an alcohol because it's "-ol" ending. Key Keytones will have a double bonded Oxygen. I think the only difference between an aldehyde and an alcohol is that an aldehyde would have a functional group instead of an H?
    Meh anyway, if anyone is even reading this, sorry you're so bored and I'm so wrong. 5 minutes of organic chem at uni, for the win!

    • @ben_jammin242
      @ben_jammin242 2 роки тому

      Didn't want to edit a third time, but you might soften the amine sometimes, and some other stuff as well, so it flows. "ethaNOLamine" this might just be me though. But I'm a nothing lol, so maybe don't take any of this to heart.
      Edit: 3,4-dimethylhexane would actually be more correct of an example... Not all the elements are present, but what I neglected was the position, bc you do sometime get like 1,3,5-tri-methyl-4-hexan-propanol-amine.

    Will adding calcium chloride affect the color of a dyed concrete, for example in stamped concrete?

    • @fritzpak4821
      @fritzpak4821 11 місяців тому +1

      It can. Calcium chloride increases the risk of efflorescence, which creates white patches on the surface of the concrete and leaves behind stains. When working with stamped concrete, using a non-chloride accelerator is recommended.

    Do you use gypsum in concrete as it accelerates the set time and causes an increase in viscosity imparting thixotropic properties?

      Gypsum delays the hydration of C3A. Watch my hydration videos here: ua-cam.com/play/PLRq6Z9d0kCT87GpUCgOsGS3J4Cp6dLP9N.html
      The amount of gypsum is dependant on the amount and form of the C3A.

      Shekhu - Hardners are specialized chemicals that do one of the following:
      1. react with calcium hydroxide to make more CSH
      2. line the pores of concrete and make them hydrophobic
      3. Fill the pores the pores within concrete.

    Is super-plasticizer a water reducer, viscosity modifying agent, both, or neither, and why?

    • @fritzpak4821
      @fritzpak4821 11 місяців тому

      Superplasticizers and water reducers are very similar. The main difference is that superplasticizers are more powerful. For example, Fritz-Pak's water-reducer only provides a 10% reduction in water requirements, but our superplasticizers provide up to 40% water reduction. Viscosity modifiers, on the other hand, are very different. These products help bond the water and cement molecules together to reduce segregation in the mix and tighten the concrete. You can see how superplasticizers and viscosity modifying agents work in this product demo video: ua-cam.com/video/pq-Rf8kPwmE/v-deo.html

      There are lots of different types of accelerators that are available. I tried to cover the most common ones for construction applications. Air entraining admixtures are surfactants used to stabilize bubbles systems in fresh concrete. These bubbles are important to provide freeze thaw durability.
